I know it's SUPER early, but part of my coping process is to focus on the things I can control. Would anyone appreciate me starting a new Genetic Counseling 2019 thread? I feel like as more and more people know about the field and lurk on the thread there might be a lot of future applicants or returning applicants who missed this years application process or didn't get interviews (me lol) that want to talk about next year but don't want to bog down the excitement of all the people getting interviews and worrying about match still. Just an idea, some of us might not be mentally ready to start thinking about next year , but, getting tips now that could help applicants have 12 months of volunteering or counseling experience vs. 8 when  application deadlines come back around could make a difference! So if you'd be interested like this post and I'll make one!

    Hey!

If you do decide to go ahead and make the thread please include the discord link in the first post, the discord has been a great resource for many of us and we do have people who are planning to apply for the next cycle already in with us.

Just in case anyone wants to know, I just emailed someone from ISU about when they will notifying everyone about interviews, and they said no later than this Thursday or Friday.

I had emailed them earlier and received the same response. But apparently they’ve started sending interviews

I know ISU is running a little behind schedule on reviewing applications, there were still a few waiting to be reviewed yesterday and I think they still have to compile the results from the different reviewers and then make decisions from there. Not sure how long they are expecting that to take them, but guessing it would be into at least next week (but don't quote me on that! :))

Aww, thanks for giving us a heads up. It makes it a bit easier to remain patient ?

You might be waitlisted for interviews. I know they gave people until Friday to submit their preferences so they might not want to reject everyone before then

That makes sense I’m just worried that not enough people will decline an interview (I absolutely wouldn’t) also I wonder how big the waitlist is

Thank you! I'm a little discouraged. I only have one other program, UMich , which I'm not very hopeful about.

I hope we both hear back from them with interviews! But you should def try submitting a few more of you can (Augustana has a feb5 deadline), a few are still open until feb 1st

For all of you interviewing at UAMS, how long did it take Noelle to get back to you about the interview date. I sent my preferences in but haven’t gotten a response yet. My email has been acting up lately, so just seeing if I may need to call her instead.

I’m in the same boat of being unconfirmed, I sent my preferences on Thursday. I really want to go ahead and start planning travel and hotel accommodations

  7. Hey guys,

I’m not sure how many of you guys have used discord before but it’s an online communications app (there’s an easy to use mobile app) with text/voice channels. I wanted to see if anyone was interested in having one set up for GC students/applicants to interact and chat informally with each other. It might be easier to get to know each other and bounce questions back and forth and get help practicing interviews.

Edit: there’s an option to add roles so we could distinguish current students from applicants and the app lends its self to being more versatile in general than forums are.

If we're being honest, my natural science GPA is around a 2.5 (likely go up to a 2.6 once I finish my biochem class) and my cumulative is a 3.36 and I got an interview.

And from feedback last year, the did recommend retaking biochem etc, but that wasn't the main issue in my application for them.

My science gpa is around a 2.6 but my overall is still under a 3.0. Im doing the Genomic advocacy graduate certificate with ISU and have a 3.85 gpa in that but when I emailed asking if I could include from my graduate classes in the calculation they said not to. So I’m worried I will be at a disadvantage and won’t be considered.
