  1. Acceptances you had: Rutgers University New Brunswick, University of California Santa Barbara Research Area: Gender, Sexuality, Embodiment, Social Psychology Final Choice: Rutgers! Reason: Funding: Rutgers offered me two years of university fellowship at 25k per year and three years of teaching assistantship at 26k per year, far more attractive than the package offered by UCSB (~16k per year, heavy teaching loads for all but the first two quarters). When accounting for the exorbitant travel and moving costs and the marginally higher cost of living, UCSB's package bordered on insulting. Faculty/Fit: Even with the recruitment of Tristan Bridges, UCSB's impending departures of Verta Taylor and Beth Schneider tanked their Sex & Gender ranking and would have displaced me within the department. While UCSB's department seemed a bit sterile and disjointed, Rutgers' was cohesive and incredibly warm. The latter is not as renowned for gender, but there are several professors I can envision on my committees. Location: After a miserable 17 hour trek to Santa Barbara from Philly I never, ever want to see another palm tree or cactus lined property. Some perks of being a New Jersey native attending the flagship university include commuting an hour from my hometown to New Brunswick and lunch dates with my sister, a Rutgers undergrad whose dorm overlooks the sociology building on campus.
  2. I've been admitted to Rutgers (2 years fellowship, 3 years TA) and UCSB (funded, details forthcoming), but I'm hoping that Indiana admits me off the waitlist with a comparable funding package. As it is, I am visiting both Rutgers and UCSB within the next two weeks. UCSB has some courting to do if they want to compel me to move to California, especially considering Rutgers is a fifty minute drive from my hometown.
  3. Aaaaaaand rejected from Northwestern. That's all for me, folks. They were my last remaining notification.
  4. Rejected from Michigan Ann Arbor. As sensitive a bean as I am I should not have checked my E-mail at work; I'm quite upset.
  5. My portal reflected the change! I'd login in and then "Check Status of Applicational Materials," which is listed on the right.
  6. Rejected from UMass Amherst. I know how capricious this process is, but I'm perplexed nonetheless. Shows me for relegating them to "safety school" status.
  7. According to their website, the IT department at UMass is performing maintenance on SPIRE until 8am on Tuesday morning. I too have applied and have yet to be notified of a decision.
  8. A bit bummed to say that I've been wait listed at Indiana Bloomington.
  9. My interests reside at the intersection of gender, sexuality, and embodiment. I am fascinated by the ways in which ideological gender is exacted on material bodies, particularly through adornment, modification, and dress. For context, my senior honors thesis investigated the Biblical modest dress practices of fundamentalist Christian women, while my secondary writing sample theorized the complicity of historical and modern incarnations of the corset in fabricating sexual difference. I've nothing definitive slated, but I'm interested in tracing the historical lineage of patriarchy as female reproductive commodification, participating in debates within feminist theory (problematizing queer theory as ahistorical and divorced from material reality, specifically), and examining hair removal and makeup imperatives among women. I am one of those insufferable "my feminism is inextricable from my scholarly pursuits" gals, and I list emancipating women from patriarchal beauty regimes and advocating for their sexual sovereignty among my chief academic objectives. I'd prefer not to disclose which programs I view as my most attractive prospects until all of the decisions are rendered. This is mainly because I will need to visit before I can ascertain the "feel" of a program (which cannot be gleaned from its online recruitment materials alone) and also because if I were on the admissions committee I'd absolutely lurk on this forum. Sneaky, sneaky.
  10. Rutgers' Graduate Director, Professor Brechin, called this afternoon: I've been admitted with full funding. Definitely one of my top choices, so this is most thrilling.
  11. UWisconsin Madison, which hadn't the courtesy to send an email or issue a formal letter, marked my application "denied." Only mildly panicking that UIndiana Bloomington has evidently sent out acceptances today. I've yet to receive any communication, and my application status still reads "submitted." Can the three who were admitted claim their acceptances and provide any additional information, please? They're my best fit program.
  12. A professor from UC Santa Barbara called a moment ago; I've been accepted with funding (details forthcoming?), and they offered to fly me out for an early March open house.
