  1. So today had a weird turn of events, its was my second time applying and out of the six schools I had applied to this year I had received 5 rejections in a row. I had started to map out my plan B since it seemed Genetic Counseling was just not meant to be and then all of a sudden I received an interview from Indiana State this morning. To all of you feeling down right now, trust me I know and understand the pain of rejection, I have received nothing but rejection (5 last year and this year) but there's hope and hard work will pay off.
  2. I also received a big fat no. I am bummed given this is my second year and my starting it out with a rejection
  3. I also applied to Indiana State and submitted my P.S. pretty early as well around the end of October. I also unfortunately saw this format change. I am hoping this will not affect our chances especially since they can see when we submitted our statements. I noticed they changed the format around the middle of December so hopefully this is not a huge deal. When I applied last year it was single spaced 2 pages so I don't know why they decided to changed the format so suddenly and toward the end the process after a lot of people had submitted it. If this is the reason one would not get an interview then that's just cruel. It's better said than done but I wouldn't worry your application, resume, and Personal statement speak more about you than if its double spaced.
  4. It honestly depends on the program. Most schools will send interviews in waves usually a day or a couple days apart before they do rejections. There are some schools though that only do one round of interviews especially if they are a smaller school with less interview space and then usually do rejections a day or two later. But it can be difficult to say, every school is different and it also depends on how many people accept and if the schools changes their mind later on. It's hard not to stress out but there's still hope
  5. Thank you and all the best to you as well! By the way to your question I.U. should have sent you an email after you submitted your application including the interview release date and interview dates. The Ohio State interviews I am basing off of applying last year.
  6. Hello there fellow second time applicant. I am also very nervous this time around, more so than last time which is surprising me beyond belief. I do not know about the other schools that you mentioned but Ohio State will most likely not reply back for at least another week for those who applied for the Dec. 31st deadline. Indiana University is supposedly going to be sending out interview emails next Tuesday the 23rd.
  7. I applied last year and this year as well. Everyone who applied for the fellowship application should have heard back by now. But, those of us who applied for the normal application that was due Dec. 31st will most likely not hear back until next week or the very end of Jan.
  8. I totally feel you on the waiting game. Last year it was a little easier since most of the programs specially said it wouldn't be until late Jan./early Feb. but due to the NMS its so stressful to know when it will be this time around. I am also hoping North Carolina will be soon. There deadline was so early and based on past results they contacted people as earlier as the beg./middle of Jan. but like you said who knows.
  9. I also submitted my application at the end of October and received an email from her a few days later with an email with the interview email release date, the interview days, and a form to fill out stating which program you were applying to, adding your NMS code, and whether or not you needed to submit other transcripts. We were suppose to submit this in order for them to begin to review our application as that's what they said last year. So I would definitely reach out to her, if she did not send you this email, especially since she has been sending you updated info. on materials received.
  10. No problem, dates are the worse to keep track of. I am just happy its 3 days earlier than I thought than later.
  11. Is the one another school your talking about Indiana University? On the bright side less than 2 weeks until there suppose to send emails out, but its going to be stressful since they gave the exact date so you'll know right away based on if you received an email that day. I noticed you also applied to UNCG, I did not apply there last year so I have no clue when they usually reply back with emails. There deadline was super early though and I noticed in previous years they contacted people as early as the second week of Jan. but then again who knows.
  12. @hfj23 thank you for the clarification. That makes a lot more sense
  13. That's what I was thinking as well. Last year when I applied to OSU they contacted me the very beg. of Feb. I was just confused because I also applied early but not to the fellowship deadline and therefore was wondering if they were still giving interview spots to those who applied to that specifically due to it begin too early for interviews for those who applied for the normal deadline.
  14. Oh okay, I asked because I didn't know if it was for regular admission for the Dec. 31st deadline, if so it's really early and I am scared/anxious.
  15. That's so exciting, congratulations! Is it for the early deadline as part of the fellowship?
  16. @GCBrittany The match allows you to rank the schools you interviewed at once most of the interviews are completed at the end of March. I believe you enter the school's program you interviewed at and that's how you will create the rank order list. Both the students and the program create this rank order list which is then submitted in the middle of April. Therefore a school can not take away your ability to rank them since you interviewed at them, prior to match day as no now knows how everyone was ranked until then. The point of the match is for the logarithm to the help the students as much as possible through these rankings even if you aren't in a school's top choice ranking. The logarithm needs all rankings of schools interviewed to do so.
  17. I know how your feeling, I submitted all my applications last week and besides waiting for the recommenders to do their thing its just "patient waiting" until January. I feel happy but kinda of empty due to spending over a year preparing for this. Hopefully (fingers- crossed) its not as bad as last year.
  18. Most programs don't require you to list your pre-req. courses in your resume/CV unless they specifically ask in the resume directions as seen with North Carolina for example. Most programs look at your transcripts as others stated. The programs that specifically require you to state the grades for pre-reqs. include a spot in the applications not resumes.
  19. Thank you for your input I appreciate it. I spoke to various program directors this past week regarding resume/CV length. According to them there is no page limit and is not a huge factor in the application process.
  20. I was wondering if anyone knew for a fact that there was a specific page length for our resumes/Cvs for applications. Even though this is my second time applying you would think I would know this by know. But, I was curious if anyone knew for a fact that there was a definite page max. I figured most resumes are 2 pages and Cvs are anything over 2 pages however, I wasn't sure if most programs would prefer it only be 2 pages long. Last year I had no problem keeping it down to 2 pages but this year I have a lot more experience to list and describe and wasn't sure if 2 pages was still recommended. North Carolina's program wants you to include so much detail about your experience and education but still lists their paper as a resume. Sorry for the rambling but any thoughts?
  21. Has anyone tried opening an account and application for Wisconsin? I created an account and tried to open a new application and it said registration was currently closed. According to their website they said applications would be available Sept. 1st. Has anyone had issues or did I screw something up?
  22. I think it definitely should help with applications this cycle. One of the schools I spoke to regarding feedback said that with a long term position like this they don't even look at whether you shadowed recently or not. Its also a great way to get to at least one recommendation.
  23. I also, was able to find a long term interning position at a hospital close to where I live. Obviously it depends on where you live and the access to a hospital with genetic counselors. I was lucky enough to be able to find the information to contact the GC which can be tricky at times. From there I had to go through volunteer resources to be able to work at the hospital. I found at the hospital I'm volunteering/interning at does not do shadowing so you have to commit as a volunteer to sneak into a intern position in the Genetics department. @AspiringGC the tasks I have done so far are very similar to what you will be doing, the pedigrees alone are a great experience.
  24. I'm not well versed as to which schools are the best for each specialty, it just depends on the curriculum. For the schools that I decided to apply to I searched their program websites and analyzed their rotation sites and looked at the hospital locations mentioned as well as the percentage of each specialty analyzed at each site. From there its really easy to figure out which programs tend to be more focused in one specialty or if they're more diverse. For example Cincinnati is based at Cincinnati's Children's Hospital so they're more pediatric based with some adult genetics. From what I have noticed from shadowing and interning there are a lot more prenatal and pediatric genetic counselors so more programs are going to be guided in that direction followed by cancer and adult genetics. However it's very subjective and depends on the program and their diversity based on the availability of hospitals.
