So I was browsing through the genetic counseling program websites to see if any schools have updated their deadlines for next cycle yet. I was surprised that North Carolina already has their applications available. It says their due Dec. 15th however I'm not sure if its because of the match system or if that's their typical due date. OSU said due to the match system this cycle their applications would be due at the end of December. The fact that their already available is scary/exciting.

Thank you for the video it definitely helped understand the match. The only question I had was, when do you actually fill out/rank the match system and is it now required by all schools to do so?

I took heath psychology this past semester and I enjoyed it at my school due to the emotional perspective of many health problems. I was told by counselors I shadowed previously to take as many psychology classes as possible. I think an intro to counseling course may be helpful, it was to me anyway when I took it. I don't have any experience with sign language but it would be an interesting thing to put in your application next cycle especially under any special skills or as another language you understand. Right now I am planning on taking embryology this summer.

I originally applied to five this past cycle and thought it was low compared to other people. I was thinking about applying to 6 for the next cycle. The only downside about it is the application fees and the number of letters needed for the recommenders to keep track of.

Hello everyone, I'm glad someone created a new forum for the 2018 cycle. I too, did not get in anywhere this cycle which was a bummer but I am ready to persevere and try to improve my application for next fall. For those of you who applied to UC and didn't get in, you can contact Bette on Monday and there will be phone interviews to specifically help you beef up your application for next cycle. I think the thing that really brought me down this cycle was the stupid GRE.... so helpfully I can fix that this summer.

For those of you that volunteer for crisis text line, how long does it actually take to do the training before you can actually volunteer? I looked at their website and it said about 6 weeks but it also, said about 30 hours of online training. Also, is it relatively easy to apply and join?

I know this a dumb vague question but does anyone have any idea of exactly how large a waiting list for interviews would be for this type of program? I received a wait list notice last week and just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with it.

Question, for those of you who got an email from Indiana University did it mention how many interview dates they have? I was wondering if they would be sending anymore emails out tomorrow?

I just called Cincinnati and she said she was going to be sending out rejection emails starting today. I also, called Ohio State and they said that they were not done with phone calls yet. She said there would likely be at least two more waves of phone calls. On the bright side it sounds like they just started yesterday, so there's still hope.

I had a question if anyone has any advice. I just received an email from Indiana State ( who originally rejected me ) offering spots in 2 alternative programs (one is a masters program the other a certificate) that have the same related courses as to genetic counseling that they said could be beneficial and help next time I apply. I was wondering if anyone else received something like this or if it is just a ploy to get more money?

I also, applied to Ohio State and Cincinnati. Cincinnati said that they wouldn't send emails until the 1st or 2nd week of Feb. I think Cincinnati might not start sending out emails until next week. I have no idea about Ohio State though, I was thinking maybe they would start this week, however I don't know their phone call process. I would think it would take a couple days though. It's very nerve wracking with all the anticipation. Speaking of Ohio State do they call you regardless of an interview or not, or do you get an email if your rejected? I also, saw in the results for Indiana University you get a rejection letter in the mail, which is scary.

Oh wow, that's awesome, I had no idea there were so many schools preparing for new programs. Just curious but did your mentor mention exactly where these new programs might be occurring?

That's a good question, I not completely sure but most of my time with shadowing and observing was with prenatal and pediatrics which was interesting. Also, I'm minoring in public health and have found some cool stuff genetic counselors do in that field. I don't know there's so many possibilities and fields to go into. I actually leanred about genetic counseling when my mom went to visit one, after my grandma passed away from ovarian cancer so, since then I really wanted to help other families in the same situation.

Thank you and the best to you too. I am hoping that's the reason we haven't heard back yet. I was worried that others had received notice last week about interviews, I'm so relieved that no one else has seemed to hear anything.

I wish I could have applied to more schools but I was limited geographically. I applied to U. Cinn, Ohio State, Indiana State, Indiana University, and U. Pitt. I was rejected by U.Pitt last week which stinked but, on the bright side I was only rejected because they didn't like my GRE scores. I didn't think Cincinnati or I.U. would say anything until Feb. but it may be sooner than anticipated since someone already received an email from U.Cinn. Where did you apply?

I am so nervous this week with all the anticipation of possibly receiving an email or phone call. I was told by the admissions at Indiana State that interviews would be coming out by the middle of Jan. ( the first interview date is Feb 18th), so I have been "patiently" waiting the last 2 weeks. I just noticed someone received an email yesterday from Indiana State's program, so nervous

Hello everyone, I just recently found this forum and was amazed to find other people interested in genetic counseling. I found it very helpfully listening to others that are in the same boat and those you have had some prior experience in the application process. I just wanted to give a heads up to those who applied to U Pitt, I just received an email from the committee yesterday unfortunately rejecting my application. ( which I'm still pretty bummed about : ( ) I wanted to prepare anyone else that an email may be coming. Also, another school I was wondering if anyone else is applying to Indiana State University? I know its a smaller and recently new program but, I was wondering if anyone else has been contacted by the committee yet? I ask because the program director said interviews offers/rejections would be sent out by the middle of Jan.
