  1. I also applied to USC, USF, and UCI. I got an interview at USF, which I'm really excited about because it's my first choice. I think they might be done sending out interview offers, but I could be wrong about that. I'm assuming that I was rejected from USC and UCI. USC I'm not too upset about, but UCI was me 2nd choice so that one hurts a little. If I do end up getting an interview I'll be ecstatic. At this point, though, I'm kind of assuming that I won't be hearing any good news from either program. I've tried calling UCI to ask if they are still sending out interview offers, but haven't been able to get anyone on the phone.
  2. I'm grateful that I have some interviews already, but I really liked the location of UCI and their program. I even had a cousin who planned to move out there with me if I ended up getting in there. It's disappointing.
  3. I interviewed there last year and it's the weekly case conference they do where the faculty and students discuss and present on interesting cases they had. Applicants don't have to do anything except listen. Some people had interviews scheduled during the conference, so they would be pulled out by the faculty. Most people didn't and were able to stay the whole time though. I haven't heard anything from UCI and I'm freaking out a little bit. That was the one interview I thought was guaranteed since I'd gotten one last year. It was one of my top choices too.
  4. I actually didn't. I reached out to UCI a couple times to ask them for feedback, but they never got back to me. Which was weird because when Pam (the program director) called on match day to tell me they had accepted everyone they were going to and weren't moving down the waitlist anymore, she told me to call or email sometime for feedback on my application. I reached out a few times, but didn't want to be annoying so I gave up on it. During the application cycle I had to call to ask a question about a LOR and when I spoke to Pam she remembered who I was, so I'm hopeful that I'll at least receive another interview there. I hated having to reapply and go through the entire process again. It was a little easier than the first time, but still incredibly stressful. I do feel like I learned a lot the first time around and used what I learned to improve my application, but I was still so nervous waiting on that first interview to see if the changes I made had actually made a difference. And of course! Feel free to reach out to me anytime with any other questions. I'm hoping you get in!! If you don't and want someone to read your statement or anything like that next cycle I wouldn't mind doing that for you or anyone else that happens to read this.
  5. Yep! This is my 2nd year applying. Last year I applied to 7 schools and only received an interview at UC-Irvine, so I'm hoping I receive an interview there again this year. Most of the schools didn't want to provide feedback until after match day. Some even specifically said not to reach out until summer because that was the slower time for them. I think it just depends on the school. Usually I would respond to the rejection letter requesting feedback and then they would provide their preference. The one's that thought it was too early to provide feedback just sent me an email telling me to reach out in a few months. They were all extremely nice about it and most schools spent a good amount of time providing a response about what I needed to improve on. Ohio State actually set up a phone interview for me to discuss my application with them; the others were just emails. The worst thing about my application is my cumulative GPA (2.87). Based on the responses I got from some schools they seemed to weigh GPA very heavily, so I didn't reapply to those. I took the GRE a couple times and did decent on it (159/159/4), and I really think the easiest thing you can do to improve your score is study the vocabulary. There was an app I downloaded called GRE Vocabulary Flashcards from Magoosh, and I found it be incredibly helpful if you haven't looked into that.
  6. I totally understand your frustration. I graduated in 2014 and took a year off before applying, thinking it was the smart decision and I would end up with a ton of interviews and options. When I applied last year I only received one interview, and ended up not getting in. The worst part was everyone asking how applications were going and having to either tell them I was receiving all these rejections or lie and say I hadn't heard anything yet. I know they all meant well, but it sucked having those conversations over and over again. Don't give up hope though! You have one interview and still have 4 more schools to hear from! It's not over until it's over. Even if you do end up having to be a 2nd time applicant (which honestly it seems like a large percentage of applicants are) at least you know what you need to do to improve your application.
  7. Are you in Chicago too? I had plans to get dinner with my roommate tomorrow, but maybe I can convince her to go to this with me instead! It looks super interesting!
  8. I think finding your own personal reason for why you want to attend a specific program will greatly strengthen your interview. Having it be your own very specific reason will make being able to talk about it much more natural as well. For the most part, I think the people interviewing you will be able to tell if the answers you give are the ones that interview prep websites have said is the 'proper' answer to give. In my opinion, the best way to prepare would be to read about the program and find things about the program that interest you and stand out. You might have to dig deeper than just the program website. Look into the school and it's history. Location can also be a big reason for wanting to go somewhere. Maybe read student bios or research where former students ended up working after graduation. I actually find that I'm not that nervous about my genetic counseling interviews because I know this is what I want to do. That makes it so much easier to talk about. I get excited about the fact that I get to talk with so many different people about a profession that I am extremely interested in. It's very refreshing after having to explain to so many people in my day to day life what genetic counseling even is.
  9. It would make sense why they're interviewing so few people then. I totally get what you mean with the job pressure. I'm also trying to hide the fact that I'm interviewing for grad school, and it's making it difficult to work around everything.
  10. Only 4?! That makes me feel so much more pressure. I was debating between finishing my undergrad at USF of FGCU, but ended up going with FGCU. Also, too bad we didn't pick the same interview date. Would have been nice to meet someone from on here.
  11. Congratulations on the interview!! I just got an email that I got an interview too! I requested March 31st for my interview date. My interview with Emory is the 30th, so I figure I can just drive down from GA right after the interview. I have friends in Tampa, but I'll probably end up just getting a hotel because it'll make it more convenient to get ready. I'm really excited about this interview. My residency is in Florida right now, even though I'm currently living in Chicago, so USF would be super cheap compared to all the other schools. My family lives in Port Charlotte, FL too,and it'd be nice to be close to them.
  12. Nothing yet. I mentioned on this thread last week that they told me in an email they were hoping to send out interview invites this week though.
  13. Congratulations to everyone that received interviews today!! I'm still waiting to hear from Northwestern. I visited the campus a few months ago and they told me they were hoping to expand their program. A friend of mine also just told me that she heard they were hoping to have 25 students this year! Hopefully that means they'll be doing a lot of interviews!
  14. My interview is on the 7th, but I'm not planning on getting a hotel. I'll just be going to New York early in the morning and leaving late that night. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to the meet and greet the night before. I have been doing some research into traveling from the airport to SLC, and I found a way that's about $30 cheaper than the method they recommend. I'm traveling from Laguardia to SLC. The school recommends taking the shuttle to Grand Central and then hopping on the Metro-North and taking that to Bronxville. Instead you can take the M60-SDS bus from the airport for about $2.50 (the shuttle SLC recommends is $17) and get off at the Harlem-125th st station. Then, from there you can get on the Metro-North and take it to Bronxville. It's not a huge difference, but I feel like every little bit helps. I also think it could be kinda cool to take public transportation and get a better idea of the city.
  15. I did not. I'm pretty sure it specifically said in the email asking me to fill out the additional application that they did not require additional LOR and resumes.
  16. @GCFaith92 I checked my SOPHAS account and mine also has a 0 next to submit application. I received an email last week saying that all my stuff had been completed and sent to USF. I emailed them to double check they had received my application and they said they had! So, I wouldn't worry too much about the 0. She also said they will hopefully send out interview invites next week.
  17. Last year at my UCI interview I rented a car because I decided to stay in Cali for 5 days and make the trip a vacation because the flight cost me $400. My friend works at a rental company, so I got a good deal on it too. I was the only one at my interview that had rented a car. I offered to drive everyone back to their hotels after the interview. About half of the people took me up on it. I went out to dinner with one of the girls I met that day and we ended up meeting up the next day to explore the UCI campus together. The interview takes place at the medical center which was about a half hour from the campus. I think whether people would be willing to split things just depends on the people that happen to be interviewing with you.
  18. I usually just call whatever number they have listed on their website for contact information. A lot of times that does end up being the director's number. Other times it's an administrative person. I've never had them seem frustrated when I call. I've found that it's usually difficult to get through to them on the phone though, so I usually just stick to emailing.
  19. I'm about to book my flight to New York for the Sarah Lawrence interview. I'm doing the afternoon interview on the 7th if anyone else will also be there that same day! My flight leaves Chicago at 5:45AM to go to New York and then my return flight is at 10PM that same day. Going to be such a long day! Just getting to the airport from my place is an hour and a half train ride, which is nice because it's only $2.50 to take the train. I might just pay $30 for a cab though which is only a 40 minute ride. I've never been to New York, so I was thinking this will give me some time to check out the city for a least a little bit. Maybe grab some dinner or something.
  20. This makes so much sense. It's become part of my morning routine to check this board, and I was wondering why no one had posted anything yesterday.
  21. I interviewed at UCI last year and they had the interviews every Monday leading up to match day. My interview was only about a week before match day last year. It's possible they'll end up doing the same thing this year and do the interviews on Mondays. I'm really hoping that's the case because that's the day I have off work.
  22. I saw in the results tab that some people have heard from South Carolina and Indiana! Now I'm so nervous about them. I'm really glad I work all day tomorrow and all weekend because it'll distract me from the major anxiety I'm feeling over these applications.
  23. I just went and reread my email from SLC. I was incorrect. They are one of the schools that students offer to host applicants.
  24. The programs don't accommodate for any travel plans. Some programs mention that students are willing to host applicants, but they'll mention that if it's an option. SLC wasn't one of the schools that offered that. Most programs will also provide lunch or snacks during the interview.
  25. @KeepSwimming2017 They definitely do interviews before they accept people. I emailed the director of the program about whether my application would still be accepted due to the delay with SOPHAS. She told me that as long as everything was in SOPHAS by the deadline they would look over it, but that they would start reviewing the other applications that had already cleared in SOPHAS. She said the people who's application cleared late could still get interviews, but they likely wouldn't be until April. @GCFaith92 I totally understand how you feel right now. I just received my rejection email from Michigan, and it was one of my top choices. I went to Ann Arbor to visit and check out the program like you did, and I didn't even get an interview. Michigan used the same exact rejection letter from last year too.
