  1. Well thank you I think a lot of it had to do with taking a gap year and moving to a new place. It sounds cheesy but it really forced me to be independent and gave me time to focus on grad school applications while being out of school. I currently work as a genetic counseling assistant which has been amazing and I'm able to shadow a ton (both in and outside of work) so I have a much better grasp of the field (googling and minimal shadowing only does so much). I also added two advocacy jobs, one at a crisis line and one at planned parenthood. It also gave me time to re-take the GRE and I ended up doing significantly better (it's a bit easier when you're not studying for it on top of classes). I'm SO glad I took a gap year and I feel like now I'll have more of a choice of programs rather than going to my last choice school just because it's the only one I was accepted at.
  2. If it makes you feel better, I was in that position last year. It really sucked in the moment but I think in the long run, it ended up being a great thing. I was super disappointed after I didn't get in last year but it gave me the chance to get feedback from directors and figure out exactly what they're looking for, improve my application A TON, and learn more about the field. Now I'm even more confident this is what I want to do (I've also heard some people not get in and discover it wasn't their calling and that's just as amazing). I look back on my application last year and laugh because I'm not even close to the same person/applicant I was a year ago. Just remember, this is an incredibly competitive field so even being considered is a huge compliment. There's also no shame in being a 2nd year applicant
  3. I think Texas does all their invites in one day. They told me they'd confirm my interview date early next week so that's probably when they'll start inviting people off the waitlist or turning people down.
  4. Does anyone happen to have an interview at Sarah Lawrence on March 28th and want to switch with me (April 6th)? I would be forever grateful and I'm not above bribery
  5. Well apparently I'm super late to discovering this website but I'm glad I did! It's crazy to think that a lot of us will be colleagues someday! Anyway, I'm trying to figure out the logistics of all my trips now... Do applicants ever become uber/car rental buddies to split some of the expenses (and then eat raw cookie dough together after the interview)? Some of the programs are quite a haul from the airport ($100+ in uber fare) and don't seem to offer much help from the current students. I'm also considering renting a car and doing a road trip for a couple of them. Anyone else having this problem?
  6. Ditto! I applied to 8 and got interviews at all of them... totally unexpected. I've thought about rejecting some but I don't think I have the guts to do it. I figure I'd rather invest the time and money now to have options later than turn some down and possibly regret it later. It's all just personal preference I think!
