  1. Hi, I would encourage you to give it another try. It won't hurt you and the Admissions Committee at SDSU is really looking for a minimum of a 4.0 on the AWA portion. Good luck!
  2. Hi everyone! I just wanted to encourage all the fall 2015 applicants to look at SDSU as a potential graduate school for their Masters in Social Work degree. The application is currently available online. You can find it here: www.socialwork.sdsu.edu. It is a great program, with experienced, passionate and knowledgable professors. You also can't beat the deal, especially for residents of California. Good luck to all the applicants! It is a lengthy process so start early!
  3. Check out San Diego State University's dual program in MSW and JD. You spend your first year at California Western Law taking law classes and the second year taking social work courses at SDSU. Check the social work website for more info. I am not sure how competitive it is. Also keep in mind that you have to take the GREs and LSATs.
  4. Hi everyone, I hope all is well. I would love to plan a meet up some time in June or July. To incoming SDSU social worker grad students, can you send me a PM of your email addresses and we can start an email thread. I am assuming that at this point, most people have made their decisions on the schools they will be attending in the fall.
  5. Congrats on SDSU and the other schools!! Well SDSU is affordable compared to a lot of other schools but their program is also pretty darn good too! My focus is in individuals and families and ultimately I would like to work with children and youth who has experienced trauma. I am not sure where I will be placed for the first year placement as I am still waiting for the field faculty to contact me. I think we should definitely get a group together and meet up before the program begins! Are you doing the 2 year full time program?
  6. Ontheswpath, Thank you! I am so excited. have you decided where you will be attending this fall?
  7. From my experiences and what I've gathered from other people in the field of social work and social services, there are certain aspects of our work that just can't be taught in class, through theory and publications but can only be gained through practice. With that said, I think that getting experience working with individuals one-on-one, whether it be through individual therapy, group settings, or case management, is the most educational and effective way to prepare you for whatever you see yourself doing in 5-10 years. If you want to get in the macro or policy side, you would have had experience working with the populations and people that you are creating a policy for-- do you see what I mean? I hope this makes sense but I personally think that the value that a social worker gains working in the field, working in the trenches is something you can replace with a course or book. Hope this helps you a little! Good luck.
  8. Who else got accepted to SDSU's program? Let's celebrate!!! I would love to connect with those that have already gotten accepted and planning on attending SDSU's program this fall and discuss orientation, field work, etc. I didn't see a Facebook page for incoming class of 2014. Congrats to all those and good luck to those that are still waiting! Please message or PM me so we can connect!
  9. Hi all, I just wanted to update you on the interview for the Title IV-E stipend I had last week. If you're interested in learning more about my experience, please feel free to send me a message. I can tell you that overall, it was very straight-forward and a panel interview with 3 people-- the program coordinator, field intern liaison between the county and school, and field instructor. My interview was 30 minutes long but it went over about 5 minutes but they did not rush me. They took copious notes while I was speaking. Good luck to everyone on their interview!
  10. I have my interview tomorrow morning so I will definitely keep you guys updated!
  11. Thanks, creativesocialworker. Also, thanks for passing your email along. Hope your program is going well at UCLA.
  12. Thanks for sharing this with us, RB Williams! Yes, please do tell us which one you end up choosing. Also, did you wait for the field instructor to contact you? I was told that I will be contacted by a field instructor last week but still haven't heard from them. I plan on giving them a week before I contact the school again.
  13. Hi nguyencredible, Thank you for your reply. I really appreciate it! Congratulations on almost completing your first year of the MSW program and also on your CalSWEC reward. Do you think it would be too soon to contact the field instructor now and ask about placement? (assuming that I do really well and am one of the recipients.) That is great news that you can gain hours during the 2-year commitment that will go towards the LCSW. That was a huge factor for me. How is your program going? What focus/specialization are you in? That is great that you're in Orange County because I think it is a lot more diverse than San Diego. I see in your picture that you're wearing a UCLA robe! Did you go there for undergrad? I did!
  14. Hi all, I am interested in hearing from current social work students, current social workers, and recent graduates about their experience in either interviewing for this stipend, working for the county of child welfare services, and any relevant information pertaining to this stipend. I have an interview for the stipend next week and it would mine amazing to get accepted and be able to fund my grad studies but I also know that the 2 year commitment is a long time and eventually I want to take the board exam to become a LCSW so I don't know how the 2 year commitment will effect my obtaining clinical hours to sit for the board exam. Any advice, feedback will be much appreciated!
  15. Sdboundgrad, Congrats on your SDSU acceptance! What is your concentration? Did you also apply for the Title IV-E stipend? I have an interview for it next week. Are you in in the full time or part time program? Anyone else out there hear back from SDSU?
  16. Just got my acceptance letter to SDSU a couple of days ago! I was so nervous and could not believe how early I heard back from them since when I emailed them, they told me late March. For once, in a long time, I feel like I can relax until the semester starts! Did anyone here apply or hear back from SDSU? I haven't seen too many posts about SDSU on here. Looking forward to being a graduate student this fall!
  17. Did anyone apply to SDSU? The wait is soo long. I think I heard that letters won't come out until April or May.... That's still another 2-3 months!
  18. Hi everyone, It looks like many of you have already sent in your applications. I decided last minute that I am going to apply to CSU, San Marcos. From what I've read, they are currently not accredited (which was a reason why I didn't apply earlier) but will be in the process of receiving another evaluation this spring. Is anyone apply to CSU San Marcos and does anyone know much about the program? Any information would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!
  19. Anyone know how competitive the MSW program is at SDSU?
  20. Thanks so much, friedgreentom. I can't wait til I get the application done and completed! I've also decided to apply to another school. Emarouk, good luck with the Washington schools!
  21. Anyone just applying to one school??? I am and lately having second thoughts about it but it is really the only school I want to go to. Anyone have any experience with the MSW program at San Diego State University??
  22. Hi all, I just started my application for the fall 2014 matriculation. I feel really behind and just wanted to see how everyone is doing. Also the deadline for the school I am applying to is December 14th and I am STILL working on my personal statement so looking for some virtual support out there. I just plan on applying to San Diego State University but having second thoughts and feeling like I should apply to other schools too. I eventually want to practice in California. Thanks
