  2. allen ginsberg sez there's nowhere better to learn than in a lover's arms, or something to that effect . . .
  3. i've heard it's important to get teaching experience . . . maybe it's different between humanities and sciences?
  4. the schools that have admitted me (via e-mail) have both requested to talk to me on the phone ( . . . I didn't put my telephone number on the app. because I hate talking on the telephone!! heheh). I guess they want to be all personable and stuff...
  5. do you mean he literally wrote "not brilliant" on your application or that he just didn't mention that you are brilliant?
  6. on the other hand, if you're lucky, it is possible to recoup this $$ (after a fashion) when schools pay your way to visit them. It still really sucked to be shelling out 1000+ when one's living at the poverty line. (and yes, I was another who forgot about GRE expenses, which would've pushed my poll vote into the next bracket).
  7. ah! je meurs d'ennui en attendant des nouvelles de Columbia (c'est bien la "angustia" comme accepted wannabe l'a dit!)! Felicitations
  8. a month seems like a reasonable period to me (Feb 9) . . .
  9. what do they do to refined cane sugar to make it non-vegetarian? I've never heard of this
  10. Ha ha! Tolstoy appears to be the preferred time killer! I'm reading "dorky stuff" (i.e., not published in the last 100 years) too, but I'll share my short-list of non-dorky fiction that I'm going to read soon--Netherland by Joseph O'Neill and The Attack by Yasmina Khadra.
  11. To the person who got into the Banana Harvesting program at Monkey U.--did they contact you for an interview before you were accepted? I applied there too, but I haven't heard anything from them yet, and I'm soooo nervous. Congrats, though! I'm jealous!
  12. 'cause you're gonna make it after alllllll!!!!!
  13. I went with my current location as opposed to my origin as well.
  14. I'm 60 pages into Between Two Palaces (trans. from Arabic) by Naguib Mahfouz. This is the first book I've read by him.
  15. I'd relinquish my right but accept the privilege of reading an LOR. However, if I had extra letters floating around, I think the most ethical thing would be to return them.
  16. applied to: 8 prediction: My gut feelings change as much as my mood does. I flip between thinking EVERYONE will accept me and NO ONE will accept me. Generally nothing in between. Right now, I'm feeling the "no one" . . . yuck. It would be absolutely fascinating if everyone who's posted on this thread would post their real results as well. We could see how accurate gut instinct can be in this matter. Like I said, I think (hope) mine is totally unreliable.
  17. this happened to me (suddenly my app. disappeared after i had submitted it), but what really happened was that my computer had saved the wrong password/username combo to automatically fill in areas (apparently the username/password was valid for an unsubmitted app. . . ???)
  18. although I agree that one must take opinions regarding "chances of getting in" on this forum with more than a grain of salt, username did solicit "predictions." Good luck! and I like your username, username!
  19. I believe in some higher power. I mean, graduate admissions committees definitely fit that bill. Nor do I (and from what it seems like, nor do most of the poster on this board), completely comprehend the intricacies of graduate admissions process, and I have thought hard about it. So, to return to the theme of the original post, best of luck to all! [edit for grammar]
  20. that's my memory from high school English too.
