Hey guys! I wanted to let you know that NW is sending out emails for those waitlisted for interviews. According to the email, all of the interview slots have been filled and they will take place from March 28th- April 11. Hope this helps for anyone waiting!

I talked to Janelle and she said that they will be sending out more invites over the next few weeks. Final invites will go out the week of March 26th

I contacted one of the admins that sent me an email regarding my transcripts, but she replied saying she didn't know about the status of my application other than that it was complete. So I guess we are all stuck waiting for them! But fingers crossed we hear back from them soon ?

Sorry to hear that but you have 7 more schools to hear back from! I'm sure many of us are in the same boat with waiting and it is definitely agony ? I'm waiting for 10 and I want to rip my hair out!!

Happy New Year everyone! Here's to getting into a program this year! Question for those applying to Colorado, I can't seem to access my application b/c the scroll down options for selecting a master's program (under academic interest) isn't working for me and genetic counseling isn't available. Is anyone else having this problem??

I basically obsessed over these to try to understand what qualities an ideal applicant should have! It was so painful reading page after page of uber qualified people who have double PhDs and basically shadowed a genetic counselor their whole life while maintaining a 5.0 and were crisis counselors at 4 different clinics hahah However, as many people have told me, they are usually fluffed up. I know it's human nature to compare ourselves and because we have not been accepted yet, it's easy to point out lacking qualities in our applications.We all know and have what it takes to get into these programs - it's all a matter of good timing/appropriate mix of qualities and experiences/dedication/luck along with other variables! The first application deadlines are coming up along with the rest of them coming soon afterword, so let's all put our best foot forward and crank those apps out!!

Does anyone know if universities take the best scores from each section from the GRE if you take it multiple times or if they take all of the sections from one test date? Also, it is okay to send multiple GRE scores to schools? Thanks!

Hi everyone! Amidst all of the craziness of app season, I wanted to wish everyone the best of luck and to keep pushing! I know that this is one of the toughest processes to go through, but in the end, it will all be worth it when we are one step closer to achieving our dreams. It is my first time applying this fall and it's all been a whirlwind of crazy, but I'm just going to do everything I can to put my best food forward! I also know (only too well) about the dangers of procrastination which I am hoping to avoid as much as I can! I hope everyone continues to work hard, but also to practice self care. We're almost there!! Side note: I want to thank everyone on this forum! Honestly, you all amazing and I would not have been able to go through this process without you guys. All of the advice and love is so great and I am stoked to be a part of this community. I would not have met some awesome people otherwise!

Wow, it looks like you're off to a great start! I know most people who are interested in genetic counseling didn't find out about the profession until after their undergrad, so it's really awesome that you are able to prepare for the application process early. So, your GPA is stellar! Just to be on the safe side, I would research programs that you are interested in applying to and making sure you have taken all of the classes they require. I know some schools require embryology or some psychology while others do not. You extracurriculars sound solid too. Just keep volunteering with those orgs to show your dedication and perseverance! I have heard that programs really favor the length of time that you are able to commit to a volunteer position (for example, someone with 1 yr volunteer experience is looked at as more favorable than someone who has only done 6 months). I'm in the same boat as you with the GC encounters, but keep trying your best to find a internship/shadowing experience. I've just been emailing everywhere! And if all else fails, there are always interviews to draw from for your personal statements and interviews. But these things are definitely all easier said than done! Study hard for the GRE! I am also taking mine this summer/fall. The Magoosh app has been really great in helping me learn vocab on the daily. Hope this helps!

I will definitely try and start my personal statements as soon as I can so I can have plenty of editing time to really make my experiences stand out! @Nefelibata Thank you for your suggestions! I will keep that in mind and try to strengthen my application by retaking more of the core classes that I have Cs in. I feel like there is so much work to be done even though the last application cycle just ended!

Thank you for starting this thread for Fall '18 applicants; it will be a great resource for us all! I'm really excited to start the application process with you all this year and to get through this together! A little bit about myself... I recently graduated with my Bachelors degree in Biology and a minors in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience with a 3.3 GPA. Extracurriculars: hospice, science tutor in underserved communities, volunteering with special needs individuals, teacher's assistant for a molecular biology class, CTL counselor, mentor for freshman undergraduate students, online peer counselor, teacher's assistant at a Vietnamese school, class coordinator for a medicine course, volunteer in the LGBTQ community, working with the Maps and Genes blog to write some posts regarding genetic counseling, medical interpreter for several years Research: worked in a genetics lab in undergrad, currently working full time as a research associate at a biotech company focusing on neuroscience and cardiac pharmaceuticals and also part time as a lab technician at a cancer diagnostics company Shadowing: I have shadowed a GC for 2 days, but I've emailed and interviewed some. I live in San Diego, but shadowing GCs has been quite difficult due to confidentiality rules and priority going to GC grad students. I'm looking for more shadowing opportunities, so if someone has any tips, please let me know! GRE: planning to take it this fall I know I need to work on my GPA since I have had several Cs on my transcript and my overall GPA is on the lower end, but I am limited due to my full time schedule. I am looking for grad level classes either offered online or in the evenings. Looking through this thread, I know some have mentioned the classes at Cincinnati which I am planning on taking, but I am always looking for more opportunities! Also, if anyone has advice on other things I can do to improve my application in general, that would be much appreciated as well! I know the majority of student bios are very intimidating, so I'm sure I'm not the only one in feeling anxious and inadequate.
