  1. I can echo this! I got a 148Q the first time I took it and a 151Q the second time, and I haven't been shut out this season even though I have yet to hear from a bunch of schools!
  2. @kretschmar Often the students who score a 335 on the exam had significant training or help (like GRE classes) that probably didn't come for free. Sure, it's possible a student sat down and self studied and somehow achieved a perfect score...but more often than not, those kinds of scores say more about an applicant's access to GRE resources than anything. Not to mention the outrageous price of the test itself, and that some people are lucky enough to have the money to take it more than once to improve their score.
  3. Accepted at NIU--just got an email about an hour ago! So happy to know I'm not shut out.
  4. I received a rejection to Berkeley today...expected, but still disappointing to start the season off on that note. Crossing my fingers for NIU...it's my top choice for a master's program. Wish I'd heard back from them!
  5. I didn't apply to Chicago but I love their transparency regarding admissions! I did apply to Yale though, and I hope it is true that we all made the first round of cuts! Yale is one of those schools I applied to because it's amazing...but with basically no hope that I'd get in.
  6. I've been reading a lot of Heidegger for fun lately and this sounds really interesting! He's a fascinating man.
  7. Mine was about whether or not God should be a moral saint (bringing in Susan Wolf, Bernard Williams, and Michael Rea, etc)
  8. I'm pretty sure I refresh my email in my sleep at this point...
  9. Yeah I applied to Yale, if they were doing a GRE cutoff, I definitely would not have made it with my 158/151, but I haven't heard anything...
  10. Surprised by the really early Yale rejections, since their deadline was in early Jan! I can't wait to start hearing back...I have a serious case of senioritis at this point and just want to know where and if I'll be headed to grad school in philosophy.
  11. I've been doing the exact same thing! Going back through the results section and looking at people's stats, reading pages and pages back into Acceptance/Rejection/Venting threads from last year and the year before, spending sad amounts of time reading old Leiter posts, and complaining about editing my writing sample over winter break to everyone who will listen. I'm truly a nightmare to be around I think... I've been wanting to take the time to do more relaxed reading as well now that I'll be taking classes in my other major to round out my last semester! I have a folder of stuff I want to read about Heidegger and random analytic stuff in Phil. Religion... Since you mention Hume, I actually just read the Enquiry in my Early Modern class in the fall. I love his prose...and the closing paragraph is SAVAGE.
  12. Should I retake with a 304 overall? I had 156V, 148Q, 4 AW. I think the rest of my file should make up for it honestly, and one of my letter writers and I are really close so I presume that's going to be a big plus...but I didn't expect to get such a low score in V at least. I'm looking at all PGR top 30 schools.
  13. If you're strictly looking at becoming an analytic philosopher, would it count against you if you asked a continental prof for a recommendation? That prof knew me pretty well, and I actually got a better grade in her class than I did in a course I took on analytic phil. of mind that I found really difficult. She was also the one who wrote my rec. for the summer diversity institute I attended...
  14. I'm at a school that's well known--probably as well known as NYU, but doesn't have a PGR ranking!
  15. Analytic Philosophy of Religion and Metaphysics (focus on free will & the philosophy of time) and a recently acquired interest in Epistemology My dream programs are of course Notre Dame, Rutgers, and NYU, but I highly doubt I'll get into any of those: the competition will probably make it nearly impossible as an undergrad... Other programs I'll be applying to off the top of my head: Northern Illinois, UC Berkeley, Oxford, St. Andrews, UC Riverside/USC/UCSD, Princeton, U Michigan, etc.
  16. PIKSI Boston in June!
  17. I'll be applying in the fall! I'm an undergrad and hoping to get lucky in terms of a straight acceptance into a masters or PhD right out of my BA. I'm finishing up my writing sample, have a list of 15-20 schools I'm interested in, and will be taking the GRE this summer/going to one of the APA approved summer diversity institutes that I was accepted at. My overall is a 3.5, while my philosophy GPA is 3.8 right now-- I think the low overall GPA is due to my other major. I'm pretty sure I know who 2 of my 3 letter writers will be, not yet settled on the third. I have all A's and A minuses in my philosophy courses thus far, but anticipate one B+ this semester, which I hope won't hurt me too much... My areas of interest are philosophy of religion, metaphysics (specific interest in free will), and epistemology.
