  1. Standard rejection from UMass Amherst this morning. I wasn't really shocked by it as I knew going in I wasn't a great fit with the department, but it's never a good feeling starting off with rejection.
  2. I remember being told in a methods class that Changes in the Land was originally his Ph.D dissertation.
  3. James Johnson is a well respected historian there, however I don't believe he's taking graduate students.
  4. Did you not look into this before applying?
  5. All I'm saying is that they could be working off a prepared list of responses.
  6. That very well may be, but as a general rule I wouldn't read too much into the language of rejection letters.
  7. To be clear, I don't think anyone was expecting a spit-roasting of someone's dissertation. I agree, that's bad form.
  8. I'll grant you that an example would probably do well to bolster what @telkanuru is saying. However, it's also not hard to distinguish between outdated scholarship and more contemporary work, especially if it's in your related field.
  9. I had a similar issue with a recommender missing a deadline by about a week. They explained it to the university on their end and I followed up to make sure it wouldn't affect my application which they assured me it would not.
  10. I'm in a similar same boat. My advisor in undergrad told me going from BA -> MA there isn't a real expectation of publication and that it becomes more important when applying to PhD programs.
  11. Just sent in my last round of apps and it feels great to get them off my plate. Now it's time to jump into the reading lists!
  12. Perfect! thank you so much. Interesting. So I should be looking at MA programs based around methodology and less so about the actual areas and topics studied by the faculty?
  13. I took french all throughout school up until college and was planning on taking a refresher course at a local community college if I could find one. I'm not sure to what extent fluency will be required at various programs but I definitely have a working understanding of the language. Thanks for recommending those programs, I'll be sure to look into them!
  14. Hi all! Thought I'd introduce myself here since I've been lurking for the past few months. I graduated this past May with a BA in History and am currently in the process of applying to History MA programs for Fall of 2018. My undergrad career was less than stellar, finishing with a 2.8, but a diagnosis between my sophomore and junior years marked a turn around for me with my last 64 GPA coming in at 3.4. I'm hoping that by doing well in a MA program, I'll be able to downplay the effect my undergrad has on getting into a competitive PhD program in the future. As far as my research interests go, I'm looking to study turn of the century France, empire, and cultural history, so any and all shouts as far as programs to look into are more than welcome! Cheers.
