  1. I attend Bowling Green currently, and while I am an English student I spend most of my time doing work in ACS (in fact, many of the English profs are cross-listed as ACS profs). It's an excellent program and I have my fingers crossed for you.
  2. The emphasis placed on the GRE and the adcom process is going to vary school by school. Some schools (Miami Ohio) don't even look at the GRE anymore, and others take them but do not use them as part of their central screening process (though they do help when considering fellowship offers--which are often outside of the department and are determined by quantitative factors). That said, a better score always helps (especially for top-notch schools), but a better writing sample, SOP and LORS will be even more important--almost always.
  3. Congrats on Brown! Seeing as how I am wait-listed at Stony Brook (Cultural Studies), I am kind-of-sort-of hoping that your gut feeling has shifted from Long Island to Providence. ; )
  4. Someone posted an acceptance from URI. Anyone want to claim it? Would it be terribly impolite to ask what kind of funding was attached to the offer? Thanks and congrats!
  5. I got a call a couple of weeks back that read as being from "Florida." I went bananas before picking up the phone.... It was a bookie based out of Florida (I did--it's true--place an online bet several years ago on some game and they still call me from time to time). I feel your pain!
  6. I suppose the price of hope is constant anxiety.
  7. Could we all agree, at least, that UF does not make all their acceptances in one day, and that they will continue to make acceptances in the future? (That is, do those of us who have not received a phone call agree that we have not been implicitly rejected?)
  8. It looks like in the past they made phone calls over the span of several days.
  9. Is anybody in here an internal applicant? I have the impression that UF rolls many of the MA students into the Phd program. Is this true?
  10. Rejected. What is truly interesting, and which has already been noted, is that the rejection was a form letter. And yet, they seem to be staggering the rejection notifications. Any thoughts on the method to this madness?
  11. Someone posted an acceptance; it says that they were contacted via phone on the 24th. Anyone want to claim this? Any information to share? And most importantly, congratulations!
  12. Let's hope you're right! It seems to be taking them longer than usual this year.
  13. That is, indeed, the truth. Thanks for putting things back into proper perspective! ; )
  14. As wait-list offers start to roll in, I was wondering if anyone knew the chances of being accepted off a wait-list (especially those who have applied in previous cycles). Obviously, the answer to such a question changes from school to school and program to program, but a general discussion of this would perhaps be helpful to those of us who have been wait-listed and are in the dark regarding our chances. Thanks!
  15. Group yoga sounds great--or group drinking. Who else will be checking their e-mail every five minutes today because of the posted acceptance? Congrats to the admit!
  16. So some rejections have gone out. If a rejection was not received...does anyone know if Duke waitlists non-interviewed applicants? Holding a candle to hope here.
  17. I also applied to the Film/Media studies track, but my focus is on new media technologies. Maybe we'll see each other there. Good luck!
  18. You should be ecstatic because: 1. Most people get outright rejected from programs. 2. Some get waitlisted, but never actually get in. 3. Some get unfunded offers. 4. Very few, lucky applicants get funded offers, and the funding is usually supplied through a TAship. 5. One or two people in a department (often, at most) get a fellowship. As was said above, these fellowships are usually not determined by the department. And while they are often judged according to quantitative data which a department may not deem important, they are also sometimes related to cultural background, economic situation/history, specific research interest, etc. You don't have control over a lot of these things. If you fall into area #4, then you are, indeed, one of the very few, and one of the very lucky. Rejoice! And congratulations!
  19. If past results are any indication, University of Florida will be making offers of admission really, really soon. Anybody else out there waiting (anxiously) for news from UF? In what UF English "track" are you interested?
  20. I did the formative Lebowski quote. Thanks for the ups! The results board has been so childishly nasty this year (looking in the direction of the philosophy cats, mainly) that a little humor did, indeed, seem appropriate. Cheers to better news in the coming days....
  21. I think Rimbaud was awaiting responses from schools when he wrote "A Season in Hell."
  22. I also applied to UT-Austin (specifically to their Digital Literatures and Literacies program) and I, too, am still awaiting a response. Hang in there! I'm sending good vibes your way!
