Got my Georgetown results. Last of my PhD apps. 1 out 2 ain't bad in my opinion.

Thanks! I'm starting to hear back from programs now, so I'll keep this in mind as I move forward. Hopefully I get some funding!

2018 Admissions, decisions, interviews, and the like

In need of some help making a decision between an enrolling in a MA program or going to a PhD program to which I was accepted. I originally intended to do an MA, but I'm not sure if that's now the best route. The PhD is fully funded with some perks and is a really good fit, but I was hoping to maybe do an MA and reapply to "better schools". I'm thinking maybe I should just save the time and money and go to the PhD program. Feel free to PM, especially if you are in the MENA field. -
Don't forget fiction! There's a lot to be taken from fiction and applied to historical writing.
-
How common is this? How do you think other programs view the person switching doctoral programs?

Don’t lose hope yet! Georgetown is just getting started. When I was admitted to Minnesota, I had already seen several people post on the admissions page. Furthermore, Georgetown does waitlists. I had an acquaintance get in off of the waitlist.
-
Some acceptances to Georgetown on the grad cafe admissions. If the lucky ones don't mind, what are your areas/time periods of study? It might help a few people out.
-
I'm not really too worried about what university/college setting I teach in, though I do have a geographical preference for Florida. Whether I teach at a community college or state doesn't concern me. I guess my concern is whether coming out of Minnesota will close the doors to these types of jobs.

Feeling a bit this way about Minnesota. It's an awesome fit, but I am worried about job prospects. They are very open about their employment prospects--64% of graduates since 2004 have found jobs as professors after the program. I don't know if that's good or bad.

Not my post.

All quiet on the western front. In the east, however, there is movement with Georgetown.
-
Somewhat related to history, somewhat not. Accepted into UT Austin's MES program, which has MENA history track. First MA program to get back!

I see why you are applying to Georgetown. John McNeil seems like a good person to work with for your interests. I study French colonial history, particularly in the Magrehb, 1830-1956. I like the theme of urban history. I’m excited about Georgetown because they have a really good Arabic program. I’ve checked in, and I’ve heard that we’ll be hearing soon.

Housing, transportation, and other factors are much cheaper, and I am currently making roughly the same amount in a much more expensive town. $2,000 for the summer is on top of what I am receiving in the stipend. This does not include other funding opportunities to which I can apply. Summer and conference is guranteed. I also have a savings and a partner making a good salary.

You are my PhD applications twin. What's your focus?

Don't disagree with you, but it let's be honest...it's nowhere near the norm.

Though I think there is more flexibility in choosing where you live as a lawyer, I don't think it involves any less writing. In fact, there might a be a higher "production" rate when being a lawyer. Academics tend to write a lot but over a lot of time. When it comes to legal work, it seems like a lot of writing but in short bursts. Just giving you another way to look at your options.

The department gives the rest. Either way I get $18,500. I just hope it's through FLAS.
-
I prefer to just wait and not ask, but I am getting a bit impatient. Has anyone heard back from Georgetown for their History PhD program?
-
I've applied to FLAS, so that's where the money would be coming from for the first year. If I receive that, I won't have to TA. If I do not get FLAS, I will be funded by the department and have to TA.

I tried accessing it, but the google doc says I need permission. Is there any other way to access it? Thanks.

I'm hoping to get a fellowship that removes that need. Yeah, I wasn't sure what other universities offered, so that was my primary purpose in posting this. I honestly thought it would be a bit more, but I don't think Minneapolis is too expensive with a roommate. I'm from Miami (FL), and I know people living there on a similar stipend.

Now that I am being told that this funding is rare, I think it might be because of the nature of my area. Most people get language training in my field.
-
How does one know if they are getting a good financial deal? I was admitted to a PhD program in history. I've been offered tuition, healthcare and a $18,500 living stipend. They also threw in $2,000 a summer for language training or dissertation travel and $700 for conference travel. I would be living a mid-sized city. Is this good? Thank you,
