Hey! Not sure if anyone is applying for the M.S/Ph.D. dual-degree at Virginia Commonwealth but I emailed the program and asked how that worked with the match because there is no track that is specific for that route. They said that if accepted to the dual-degree program they would let you know in March and the applicant would then be taken out of the match! I feel like this is good news since I was worried about having to rank without being able to specify the dual degree aspect. Just wanted to let anyone else who is in this boat know what I heard.

I'm applying to UC! I am a few years out of undergrad also, no kids here, but I'm married and unfortunately there are no programs closer than 4 hrs to where we live now. I am hoping to get some interviews so I can try and emphasize how badly I want this. Nothing says commitment to your education like long term, long distance marriage eh? Good luck!

Haha it's simply a signature mistake, I deleted another school and was editing from the middle. Thanks for the concern though!

Yeah there was a prompt, you have 90 seconds to think about what you're going to say then 60 seconds of the video. I'm assuming they have multiple prompts, mine wasn't so bad. Just get it over with, I'm sure you will do great!

Yeah it was tough, not actually doing it but just getting up the nerve to record was hard! I just focused on taking my time and not trying to cram everything I wanted to say into 60 seconds. Coming across as calm was more important than bombarding them with information for me!

I think so! Everything I've seen is to take it before Dec. 1st. Since most applications have you self report GRE scores anyway I think if the officials were a little late you would still be considered. My GRE scores are crazy so I didn't even consider taking it again later, but if its important to you I wouldn't worry about it and just report them as soon as you can!

Nothing yet, I took my GRE in late Oct and just sent all my official scores earlier this week. On the ETS page it still says pending and their website says it can take a couple weeks so I will keep checking that when I check my LoR responses. I'm applying to the M.S/PhD program at VCU so I need to keep in contact with the director so both programs get my scores.

So true! Plus the timing is the worst for me because I am graduating and defending my current Master's thesis next month. I know I won't even feel like celebrating until I know what is happening in April!! This is my first time applying so I bounce back and forth between being confident and feeling totally ill-prepared. Oh well, it will all work out for the best!!

Is anyone applying to Virginia Commonwealth University with the intention of trying to get into the dual degree program (M.S-Genetic Counseling/Ph.D-Human Genetics)? I know there has to be two separate applications then acceptance into the program but I am also wondering how it works with the new match system...Probably not much use thinking about it until the match portal opens up but just wanted to throw it out there!

@GCo.Hopeful Do you have a Google account? I don't know if that is needed but when I click on it it automatically links through my Google drive. Hope that helps!

Interesting! I assume they most likely look at your transcript as a whole no matter what you self-report. I just ask because I've already started some applications and there is no option for a secondary institute/degree! When I first started my Master's I just took the GRE as a formality since I already had my assistantship lined up with my PI, so I didn't try and my scores weren't stellar. I will probably take it again, it just is weird to have to spend money and time on a test that is supposed to gauge how well you would do in graduate school....when you've already completed a postgraduate degree! Oh well, academia for ya! Thanks for your insight.

Hello everyone! I'm a first-year applicant to GC programs and am becoming more aware of how competitive this field is! But trying to stay positive and prepare as much as possible! Question, do any of you already have a master's degree in a related subject? I'm interested what impact that will have on applications, which GPA they look at, relevance of GRE scores, things like that. I have a B.S in biotechnology and recently graduated with a M.S in genomics.
