Congrats I don’t know how long it took between the department recommendation and my school acceptance because I didn’t get notified by the department. Good luck though, hope they accept you soon!

Yeah, I submitted the application and just waiting for my assignment now. I applied for PL/SE in some places, but ended up in systems. Let me know if you decide to attend UCI. We can chat so we at least know someone when we get there
  4. No problem and congrats btw For what you said, I think UW would be the best choice because of potential advisors. If there’s just one that you’re barely interested in at WashU, then it’ll probably be easier for you to get involved in an interesting project at UW. You should contact some students to find out how far the stipends go at both places. 10k is a big difference, but I agree with you, it’s fine as long that’s enough to live on. I’m not really sure how important it is, although I’m sure it does matter. I believe the most important thing is to be productive throughout the program. I’m an international student though, others might have a better insight about this.
  5. You should go through their faculty to find possible advisors, who have research projects that interest you. Given that you find people that equally interest you on both schools, I'd go for UW-Madison.
  6. I second @collegesista‘s opinion. For one school I contacted students that had their emails on the lab’s website. The other one didn’t have that, so I asked my potential advisor to get me in touch with some students, as I couldn’t even find a list of current students of the program.
  7. Some of my applications weren’t updated either after I got the rejection emails. Good luck with your other schools!

Congrats, those are two great programs!! I'm an international CS student too, but I'm starting a PhD. What's your area of interest? Housing is pretty expensive, but I think I'll stay on-campus which is not as bad. I can't really help on deciding which program is better for you... you should try posting it to the CS or Decisions forum

Thought I could restart this thread. Anyone planning a move to Irvine this Fall?
  10. @spamhaus said they emailed a POI, so they emailed a professor directly. They’ve probably been in contact beforehand though.
  11. @spamhaus good luck with your GT application!! I hope you have good news soon
  12. I got accepted last week, so they might still be making decisions. I don't know for sure though. They also didn't tell me anything about visits, maybe because I'm international.
  13. No problem. Thanks and good luck with USC I'm an international student, so take everything with a grain of salt. I've read both that it helps a lot and also that it doesn't matter as much (as long as you put in the work). My personal opinion is that between two people with the same amount of work done, a R1 degree might be the deciding factor. But I personally would go for the stronger department, where the faculty can prepare you better.
  14. USC is R1. You have to check the Carnegie Classifications (http://carnegieclassifications.iu.edu/classification_descriptions/basic.php) to figure out where a school is listed. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong though.
  15. Thanks! Yeah, it looks like that so far. I'm trying to arrange a visit on both before I make a decision. How about you, any good news?
  16. I got accepted at UCI!! Checked gats tracker and the letter was there with a congratulatory message. Didn't receive an email notifying me though. Good luck to everyone
  17. I only applied to Davis out of those. I had an interview over a month ago, but haven’t heard anything ever since.
  18. I wouldn’t give up on it. I hadn’t listed this PI and they still contacted me. PS: just to add the PI contacted me directly, so don’t I think there’s only a batch of interviews that go out. good luck
  19. I had an interview with a professor from UCI this week.
  20. Hey guys, a little late to the party but I guess it's better late than never. Also anxious about not hearing from most apps, only had two interviews with no accepts/rejects so far. Good luck to everyone I joined this server, but there's not much happening yet.
