  1. Hi, I applied to Biostatistics Ph.D. program starting Fall 2018 but haven't heard anything from them. I looked at the results posted on the gradcafe but still find nothing. Did anyone receive admission to this program? Thanks, Laoce
  2. Taxpayers are not only the American citizen but also internationals who work or live in the US. Yes, Stanford got the money from the government, but a larger portion of government income was paid by the internationals who work or live in the US. The fact is anyone works or lives in the US, regardless their nationality or country origin, has to pay taxes to US government. Based on that, internationals should have the same amount of education opportunities just like when they paying their taxes. Being an international student myself, I worked in NYC for a year and I paid the exact same amount of taxes as my American citizen coworkers. In fact, when I did my BS and MS in the US, my tuition is about doubled than a domestic student. I think I should get the same opportunity as an American citizen to get accepted into a statistics Ph.D. program. However, the reality is the admission standards for internationals are higher than domestic. I was not able to get into the Ph.D. programs where my domestics classmates get accepted easily.
  3. Do school names and ranking matters for academic/industry jobs?
  4. Thanks for your information. I just asked my professor and he told me pretty much the same thing. I guess I will go with my funded offer at UT Houston or South Carolina.
  5. My first choice is to become a faculty. However, the schools where I got accepted are not that strong and I am considering to become a researcher or work for a pharmaceutical company. I am an international student and there are pretty limited opportunities for me. Basically, I have to get into a decent school and get good publications to be competitive in the job market. So I would like to get into a competitive program even if I need to spend more money.
  6. I get the offer from University of South Carolina and Arizona. I think I will probably go there or wait for better school, there are still 8 schools haven't heard back.
  7. I have funded offers but most of them are mid tier schools. The email says they hire around 40 unsupported Ph.D+MS each year. And the cost is around 35K per year for unfunded student.
  8. Just get accepted by Florida State University statistics Ph.D. (Without Funding). The email says they will give limited TAs based on your grade on qualifying exam. Basically, the first two years will be fully unfunded. Does anyone know this program? How likely can I get the RA after my second year?
  9. Hi, Does anyone know the biostatistics program at U of Colorado Anschutz medical campus? I was interviewed and accepted, but there is pretty limited information on this forum. Can anyone share some information such as Ph.D replacement (no information about placement on their website), number of accepted PhD each year, and How strong the faculty? And How about U of Colorado Anschutz vs UT Health Science center at Houston school of public health for biostatistics PhD? Thanks a lot, Laoceberg
  10. The one ranked in 53 : University of Texas Health Science center at Houston Graduate school of biomedical science - University of texas MD anderson cancer center https://gsbs.uth.edu/quantitative-sciences/biostatistics-track The one we get accepted (Unranked): University of Texas Health Science center at Houston School of public health https://sph.uth.edu/divisions/biostatistics/
  11. Basically, UT health has two separate biostatistics phd programs. The one we get accepted is unranked, the other one is ranked 53.
  12. I also get accepted by UT Health at Houston. I think it is an unranked program. Basically, there are two biostatistics Ph.D. programs in UT Health. One is GSBS- which is primarily funded by UT MD Anderson and UT Health-graduate school of biomedical science. The other one is where we got accepted, it is UT Health School of Public health. The GSBS is ranked in 53rd in USnews but SPH is unranked. I would rank UT MD Anderson > U Pittsburgh >>>> UT SPH.
  13. If you are interested in Biostatistics, I think you can apply some MS in Biostatistics programs in sophas. There are still some good programs in Biostatistics still seeking master students.
  14. It is extremely competitive this year, especially for international students. I think you have a pretty good chance for UC Irvine on your list.
  15. There are two questions I always want to know the answer: If I want to work for a pharmaceutical company in the future, which research topics should I choose? How does statistical genetics compare with statistical genomics? And which one is hotter? Any suggestions?
  16. Does anyone know Biostatistics PhD program at University of Colorado Anschutz medical campus? I got the interview notification several days ago and there are so few information about this program.
  17. I applied to both GSBS and SPH. Get accepted by SPH and haven't heard back from GSBS. As far as I know, the GSBS Biostatistics program is pretty small. There are several posts in 1point3acres talk about GSBS programs. The link is http://www.1point3acres.com/bbs/thread-41710-1-1.html.

  19. For question #2, according to a Chinese "gradcafe", there are some people get interviewed by Yale, Columbia and etc. I guess there is no difference between international and domestic. All applicants should be interviewed in the same time frame.
  20. NYU only enrolls one or two students each year and application is around 100. So I didn't apply for it... Admissions and performance We enroll one or two students each year; these are chosen from approximately 100 highly qualified applicants.
  21. If you are applying for master programs, then you don't need to worry. 13 schools are pretty safe.
  22. If you are an international student, I think Columbia is a much better choice. As an international student myself, Columbia has a much better reputation overseas and employers prefer top ranking schools.
