    Hi there,

Queens sent out some offers to waitlisted applicants. I just got my offer. I hope you guys heard from them as well.

All the best to those still waiting for an offer.

    CONGRATS!!!!!

Wish you the best of luck with your program :)

Hopefully, that will be amazing. If I am not wrong, it seems like you have made up your mind to attending Western, which is a great school. I have a friend who went there and he had an amazing experience. He highly spoke of the placement opportunities.

That's so exciting to hear! Yes, I will be attending Western and I am very excited about the placement opportunities as well. Very much looking forward to this next year.

As for Queens, I just want them to close my application and let me know what the status is. If I get a refusal, then that's that but I will be declining if I get an offer :)

I am waitlisted at Queen's University for MPH. I checked the application portal yesterday and my status had changed from 'application complete' to 'application submitted'.  Now I am worried that they might not have reviewed my application until now, which doesn't sense b/c they emailed me that I was waitlisted 2 months ago.

    Has anybody else experienced this?

I've had the same thing happen as well. Maybe we will hear back soon!

Did anybody on Queen's waitlist get admission offer for MPH?

Not sure what my chances are. If anybody on waitlist got any offers, please share so it can give us an idea of where we stand. This waiting sucks:(

Hi! I have also yet to hear back from Queens. They placed me on their waitlist and I haven't heard from them since.

    @goalsforgradschool Hi congrats!

If I may ask, why did you choose WO?

I accepted UWO for a few reasons. I applied to 6 schools (U of T, McMaster, UWO, Queens, Waterloo, McGill) and so far have been waitlisted for Waterloo and Queens and refused at the rest. I expected this to happen since it's my first time applying to grad school, and in all honesty I don't want to apply again next year in hopes of getting into the rest of the schools. I got into a program that is good and I should attend.

It's a program like everyone else. Only difference is that it's a year. Save for McMaster and Waterloo (MScPH), the rest are also non thesis, course based that also provide a practicum placement.

The one concern I had was the ability to publish research. I hoped to be able to join a research team as an RA within those two years and the condensed nature seemed daunting. I reached out to a current student in the program and she helped to answer any questions that I might have, and that was great!

After creating a pros and cons list, it was pretty clear that if you have a goal and a means to achieve it, then go for it! I am thinking that after the completion of the program, I have an extra year to work and to plan and see if I would want to pursue further schooling.

I know the cost is very large ($32000), but once I broke down the cost from 2 years to 1, including living costs of other cities and London, Ontario, I am framing it as paying a lump sum for a degree that is supposed to be 2 years but has been brought down to one (it's letting me sleep at night lol).

Lastly, a wonderful colleague of mine said that you only need one place to say yes, and it's the student that makes the program, not the other way around.

So here I am, ready to drag my butt across Canada in hopes of putting my foot in the door of the public health work force and research out in Ontario.

I’ve been accepted to SFU Population Health and to McGill MScPH. I’ve currently accepted both offers but if I’m accepted off the UBC MPH waitlist I will likely choose to accept it and then withdraw from my other offers. If I don’t get into UBC I guess I’ll decide between moving out east, or attending SFU. Personally I think the program at SFU looks amazing but having done my undergrad there I would prefer a change of scenery.

I have a few friends currently in the SFU program, and they love it! Same with UBC. My co-worker graduated from her MPH about two years ago, and she had nothing but positive things to say. Congrats on both acceptances!

The McGill MScPh looks great too. It would be a great change of scenery to live in Montreal. My co-worker is from there and had a great experience at McGill and in Montreal. I'm dreading the change of weather from west coast rain to the east snow but it would be nice to experience a different city.

They didn't give me a rank too and said they are not sending out any offers for now. Don't know when to expect to hear back from them.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Hopefully within the next few weeks.

Grad school acceptances are so odd. But at least the weather is getting nicer here on the west coast so there are plenty of activities popping up to occupy time with :)

    Hi,

When did you get waitlisted at Queens? Did they email you and give you a rank?

Hi! I emailed them myself and they let me know that I'm waitlisted. They didn't give me a rank :(

Also still waiting to hear back for this as well as McMaster's MPH!

I'm also waiting for McMaster. For U of T, they sent their rejections about two weeks or so ago, so they're probably going through their waitlists! Hang tight!

Pros and cons spreadsheet! :-) That's my nerd answer to everything.

But seriously, are you thinking of getting into a job that requires an Epi specialization? It seems like you can take equal numbers of Epi courses (actually maybe even more Epi courses) at Waterloo than at Lakehead, you just won't come out with Epi in the title of your degree. You can still mention all the Epi courses you've taken if you apply for a job that needs them.

I guess also, there is a requirement to be on campus a couple of times at Waterloo but not at Lakehead... and a Capstone project at Waterloo but not at Lakehead... so in the end, I think it would come down to which program gives you the most things you want in a degree and which will be more useful for you in the future.

[Disclaimer: I've accepted a place at Lakehead]

I second this, pros and cons spreadsheets :D

Lol on making the spreadsheet of pros and cons. I do the same.

Cost of Western is a valid point. You know your situation best. If I were you I would have gone with Western because for me getting into my dream job faster is more important than getting into my dream school.  But if you think down the road you would feel missed out by settling for Western than applying again next year might be worth it.

I'm going to play Devil's advocate here. I think you have to look at your reasons for going to grad school. Is it solely to get into your desired job asap? If so, accepting Western seems like a sensible decision. Are finances a consideration? If so, maybe going through the most expensive program isn't the best idea. Are there particular courses at UofT that Western doesn't offer, or something about that program in particular that made it your first choice? If so, would you feel like you missed out on something/that you "settled" if you went to Western?

I took a year off between undergrad and grad school and got a job. It meant I had more money, more maturity and more experience when I did apply to grad studies. A year here and there is no big deal, especially if you do something useful with it.

In the end, I'm a firm believer in going with your gut. Doesn't matter what other people think, you are the one that has to live with the decision :-)

If you're a nerd like me, you can also make a spreadsheet of pros and cons... Lol.

Thank you, you two! I have created a spreadsheet, and I do think the Western program provides an equal opportunity. I took a year off to work and gain experience and it's fuelled me even more to get into the type of job that I want to be working. The more I look at Western's program, the more I realize that the two programs are on equal footing in regards to what you learn. U of T's program prepares you for the same job market that Western does.

Thank you for not judging and giving me your input, I very much respect that :)

  12. Hi everyone, I would love some insight here.

My top choice for grad school was U of T Health Promotion. I've been looking forward to attending this program since my second year of uni, and not getting in is really crushing. However, I have received an acceptance to Western, and though it wasn't my top choice, it's still a graduate school that will help me get my foot in the door of working for NGOs and other health agencies. A friend of mind haphazardly said that some students don't go to grad school when they don't get into their top program and will apply again. I was a little taken aback that people did that, but now I'm in that boat. I wanted one particular school, I didn't get it, and now I am rethinking this entire process.

This is unreasonable. I should go to a good grad school, and Western is a great university! Please tell me how unreasonable my thought process is.

Just got the rejection mail from UofT Health Promotion. I knew it was coming but it still hurts a little, lol. Congrats to everyone who is hearing better news, I'm still keeping fingers crossed for a couple of other schools!

I feel your pain, I just got a rejection too. I felt that I was a strong candidate and it does sting a lot to get the rejection. But it's okay, it is what it is :)

Congrats! Wow so McMaster's started sending letters out too! Admissions season is bad for the heart for those of us waiting endlessly :P

I agree, it is super rough. The wait will probably keep going until June, we'll just have to sit tight and stay occupied! And on the bright side, summer is around the corner so there is better weather and more time to go outside and do activities :)
