  1. I think you are reading too much into the silence. Try to call during her office hours. But just in case: if you have a school which accepts 4 letters then it is easy to ask a 4th person about the possibility of writing you letters. Maybe it will add to that one file in that one school maybe you have to ask him/her to send the recommendation letter to more schools. Once a professor wrote you a letter they will be ok with sending it to other schools as well if you need it.
  2. Read previous posts from Penelope Higgins. Good luck.
  3. Hey I just tried to be ironic to show how stupid the OP is. I am sorry if it was offensive to any queer people. I know that being in one of the "diverse" groups is an uphill struggle.
  4. You should talk to some other professors honestly about your admission chances. I was once in your situation and I asked my other profs, about my chances and I actually said that I am asking this because of the discouragement I got from this other prof. By the end of the conversations(I talked to 5 different people) I learned a lot about the field, departmental politics, interdepartmental politics and my actual chances with my stats. All of these can play into this person trying to dissuade from top schools. Try to listen to the other profs and piece together the puzzle (oh and by the end of that discussion round, I had more than enough recommenders and I had a better idea where I want to apply.so while this route is scary it can really work ). Good luck!
  5. Just do not forget to send in your applications, all materials et. Put the date and the scores you know in your application as much as you remember f you do not have them in your hand. Schools know that what issues are out of the applicants hands and they are mostly ok with a little late GRE scores, recommendations, transcripts(if the school sends them).
  6. Me too . I am really confused about the US's curving mania. I actually have to explain some students that if they did badly they do not want me to curve the quiz results( and they have energy to argue about a point or so).
  7. Why do you not say simply that you are a transgendered other gender? Then you could be even straight??? Was adopted into a black family? (who can check?) Ok apart from the irony: I do not think that diversity statement will help with the admission. this is not undergrad and actually they are looking for the best possible students not the most diverse lot. I am sure you have something in your life you can inflate to fill the space.
  8. Normally schools have a window for corrections after the application deadline. So chill , your file will not end up in the trash. Make sure you send whatever you have to all the schools before the deadline though. Then you can ask them how you could correct the error. It will take them some time to answer your question, this is the busiest time for them but it will be fine.
  9. well, you should probably ask this question at the engineering subforum to have a field specific answer. I am an international student but as far as I know international students are evaluated on the same basis as American students in quants and in verbal.Toefl does not matter (because everyone has a good one). Aw does not matter (at least in my field) because you have to submit a SOP. I also think that some people may not want to share the university they were admitted to to stay anonymous. Maybe you could have a more general category there like approximate rank.
  10. I am not sure where do you want to apply but political science programs in the US consider the GRE and the quant score is important. probably it is less important in history (the quant score) While your publishing record is impressive you should probably talk to someone (a trusted prof) who knows the admission process in a US poli sci departments about your current admission chances. Often the GRE is used to cut the applicant pool.
  11. If you can try to figure out what went wrong with your applications previously and get someone experienced (like a prof) look through your current file. If they like it you just have to acknowledge that the process is a crapshoot and apply widely so you have some schools in the mix that are still good but maybe a little less competitive.
  12. If you are in sciences your quant gre seems to be concerning to me. maybe you can ask this in your field's subforum too, but in my experience scores have to pass a minimum separately and not in aggregate in reality. since there are usually a lot of qualified applicants a subpar qre (not even in the same ballpark as the rest) can sink an application.
  13. New people: Don't feed the troll. please.please.
  14. I am a foreigner and this is elementary school math where I came from.... I am sorry.... I want to be constructive. ....The math section in the GRE is not difficult but I feel that you will not get through it without studying. Just sit down and do the math section of one of these books & practice. Some books will give you a sheet of useful formulas that you can study. ... not even a lot. We all want this to be easy but on some level this is an entrance exam. (testing in my opinion how well you can swallow sitting down and studying) good luck!
  15. Be considerate about the Thanksgiving Holiday too. I know I was not first and missed deadlines. So this is why the topic came up with my recommenders later. And than the sad surprise, professors told me later that self reported scores are fine and they are ok even if you take the GRE later than their deadline (!)... I kid you not. Anyway everybody said that they are ok with official GRE scores getting there late because it is out of the student's hand. Well, this info does not help me anymore I missed a number of schools because of this. grrrr. Anyway, you should check it with the department in question if you are in doubt though.
  16. wow peculiar. I have not heard about a program that cares. fwiw I got into top ten places with aw below 4, and from conversations it seems that people do not take a look at the AW. Anyway if you need half a point maybe you could ask for a regrade? It takes some time and money but I guess it is better than rewriting the whole thing.
  17. The same with political science.
  18. Your thinking is very very inappropriate. If the department want to have a diverse class they might take into account your gender or background (they will see that on your application), but trying to appeal to reviewers with being a pretty girl sounds an amazingly wrong . And this is coming from a girl.
  19. I would first talk to the lab instructor. In any case s(he) has to have your back make sure that if this guy goes to him directly he will know about the situation. Then scare the kids, or let him scare the kids about their performance and the appropriate grades that will follow. You may have already lost this class in the sense that your evaluations will be lousy (it happened to me once) but you have to stand your ground and if they deserve to fail, fail them. You may even want to try to leave (of course with the agreement of the instructor) if they do not show up. Maybe if they are scared at least the majority will get back to behave and you can help them. With that one person: it may be too late but just stating that you can not only increase their grade but decrease their grade too if they want revision can help with the complaints. If he is in a competitive sport he may have to maintain an average. Letting know the coaches that this will not hapen may be appropriate. Also when any situation gets out of control if the person tries to communicate with me in email I always include the instructor as a cc in my response in which I try to be the most appropriate ever. Audience often silences inappropriate behaviour. Good luck!
  20. Normally they do keep the GRE scores on the record. You should ask them to make sure, but I did not have to resend my scores anywhere.
  21. Often the schools have their own forms that the recommenders have to submit so I do not see how the third party service is feasible. Anyway, recommenders tend to write pretty much the same letter so it does not seem to be a problem for them to send it over and over again. Also at the beginning of the season you can send them an email with all the schools you are applying for so it is easy for them to keep track of the recommendations. I was very self conscious about the entire process but my recommenders seemed to know it and take it as normal.
  22. I think the quality of the professors and the cohort matters. It depends on your personality though. I am a race horse and I just sleep if there is no competition(so strangely I am a good student in a good place and bad in a bad place). For these reasons I transferred and it was a great decision. This said, often there is not much difference between top universities. Also you may have to restart your entire study when you move to a different place. If you are really sure that this is the right way for you : go for it. Be sure though that you actually like the universities you apply the second time , and not just because they are ranked higher.
  23. I only got the close or over 700 on each section, when I asked, sorry. I also objected the same way you do but it did not matter. Also being an international student does not matter apparently. It is not a hard cut-off, but you have to be close to be seriously considered (and I guess verbal can be somewhat lower than math ). This is from (several) top 3 university adcoms. +with the new GREs I guess percentiles will matter more. Maybe some other people have different info.
  24. Well, do not bank on that. Most people have pretty good TOEFL scores who apply to good programs (and boy if you do not have good points that is a problem!). The major problem is the wide gap between the two exams. starrystarrynight you have a brilliant quant score. I think it will help you especially if it is not usual in your field. Adcoms will stop to take a look.I think you should send these scores even if you retake for the verbal. AWA does not matter at all in most fields.
  25. ok in my opinion the good news is that non-native speakers can do just as well as native speakers on verbal because native speakers often do not put into the test a lot of effort. The bad news is getting the results requires a lot of mindless memorization of endless wordlists a total waste of time, but it does not require any special skill just sitting in one place for an extended time. I used Barron's and Princeton's GRE books. Princeton has a much shorter vocab list, I learned them all. Then I started with Barron's and went through as much as I could(it's dense. I think I ended up going through half of the lists and skimming through some more before the test date).I just sat down and went through the lists, one for a day or so. Then I started the practice tests and practice exercises, and went through the techniques that the books recommend (some work for non native speakers some do not. if you have never seen a word it will not ring any hidden memories fro instance no matter how well read you are) A lot of words that I saw before came up for real which helped me remember later. Barron's 1100 words you need to know is also a neat book, I started later when I knew 60% of the words but I loved that you can practice reading comprehension through real passages constantly and it has fill in the blanks too. Anyway, I got over 90% but it was a summer worth of hard work.
