I know people were saying that they're giving out less awards this year so I checked the solicitation that was put up while we were applying. The solicitation said they were giving out 2000 awards. I think the solicitation that's on the website now is for the next 3 years, not us.

Interesting, i thought that the finalized budget only gave 1500? It would be great if there was 2000!

This is new for me. Yes I pressed the search button. No, nothing for 2018 comes up, as is the case with 2019 as well.

It's been a while since I was able to access the, like, press releasey version of the 2018 results found at https://www.nsfgrfp.org/, but up until yesterday I was able to get the list via the process above. Not now.

    Sign?

I noticed the 2018 were down like maybe a week or 5 days ago :(

I can't imagine it's beyond Friday because the response deadline for other fellowships (and grad school for the undergrads here) is April 15th and we need to know before then to make a decision.

I mean...it would be cruel to make us sit through another weekend but I can see that happening!!

I feel like I can't focus on anything rn :(

No, she really did not want to tell me that part. I was trying to get it out of her. However, she just said the DoD groups has to give them names and they'll notify applicants as they come in.

Thanks for trying! Guess it's just time to wait...

Yea, I called and was told that they send notifications as the come in from DoD groups. Some will hear sooner than later. They don’t wait to send them all out at once like other fellowships.

Like ARO and other major offices, or by the BAA section? Was that made clear?

Not all maintenance messages precede GRFP announcements but all GRFP announcements are preceded by maintenance messages.

Has anyone heard anything on a delayed reward announcement this year due to the government shutdown? I wasn't expecting an announcement until mid April, but the buzz around here has me nervous.

Other people have called them and tbey have confirmed release is set for "early April" still.

They said in the application confirmation that rejections are sent out after 'award acceptance'  (probably indeed waiting for people to decline before more offers are sent out). It also seems like last year the results sort of trickled in over a week or so. I think probably the top candidates got their offers already and the rest of us have to wait longer to hear back.

    Ugh...good to know though.

I got an e-mail just after 3pm that I got the fellowship! No idea how they're sending it out—if it's by office or all at once.

Does anyone know if the NDSEG has any subject requirement? Is it like NSF where it's about the person not the specific project proposed? Or by accepting are you bound to do exactly what you outlined?

I haven't heard either way about my application...so maybe by office?

I am a second year microbiology student at UC-Riverside and am studying melanized yeasts found in biological crusts.
Not a lot of students at my university even know about the NDSEG, and even less in my department, which is why it's so critical for me to look for other people who also applied in the Biosciences and were actually successful in achieving the honor.

The NDSEG application seems very different than any of the other fellowships I have applied for and I am still confused.. is the first prompt only about 3,000 words and about my goals? From what I can tell the new website has been confusing a lot of people.. and it doesn't explicitly say 3000 words, but other online sources have mentioned this. Also, there really is no direction for the research prompt, how would I write this one? I understand that I need to pick one of the disciplines.. but in these fields which are more engineering heavy, how does one write a bioscience one that intrigues them?

Any type of guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I am in the same boat with questions, but no answers...maybe we can talk them out on here though?

This year they have changed the requirements from what was previously requested (1 page of general research statement (3,000 words) to 3 pages of a full proposal).  It is still unclear how much detail they want in the 3-page proposal.  I emailed them to inquire, and they referenced me back to their main website for any questions about instructions.

lol nice, I was thinking about asking them as well. Guess I won't!

Does anyone else with the NSF GRFP still have to work full-time* for their advisor? It's not that I mind, particularly--it's interesting work and valuable experience, but I don't think I should be expected to work just like everyone who is funded by his grant, when I'm technically working for him for free. Plus, because of this work, there is zero chance I can actually complete the project they funded me for, which makes me worried people will ask about it when I'm on the job market. I'm just to figure out how normal this is.

    *grad student expectation = 20 hrs/week

I’m extremely confused how you think 1) that working full time is 20 hr/wk (are you still taking courses?) and that 2) just because you’re funded you won’t need to work that much.

You'll need to finish your PhD, right? You’ll need to accomplish work regardless. Also remember that the GRFP only covers a salary- you still eat up research costs.

Also, you don’t need to keep doing the same project you proposed for GRFP... it’s to fund you, not a project. So don’t worry.

Just put in the effort. I don't think that there is a huge difference in the abilities of first and second year students to write a good proposal.

Just to clarify, are you asking if you should apply as a second year and this is your first year? I may be a bit confused about what you are asking. My apologies.

Yeah, I’m a first year wondering if I should wait until next year...I figured it would be easier when you are settled into a lab (and not just starting a rotation)

I don't think that there is any advantage or disadvantage to applying as a second year applicant. It is simply another cycle. I'm sure someone can find a way to over-analyze it and find strengths and weaknesses, but I would just focus on getting work done instead.

Even if you don't have a lot of time and you are finding it difficult, I would advise you to still apply this cycle. It's great experience/practice and you have nothing to lose but a bit of time. Use it as an opportunity; ask a professor in your department if you can write a proposal with them and get to know their research. Best case, you get a major fellowship. Worst case, you got great experience and have a starting block for future funding applications.

How can you put together a project as a first year that’s as good as a second year tho?

  14. First question...is there a significant advantage as a second year applicant? I am hesistant to apply as a second year, because everyone else in my program is doing that. But it’s hard to write a grant without finishing a rotation.

    Any input?
