  1. My ideal scenario when I set out with all of my applications was to get the Fulbright award and an acceptance to a good PhD program that would allow me to defer until the 2019/2020 school year! (I was very optimistic at the start of fall last year.) Right now I'd be happy to get in to just one of the places I sent out applications to! :P

  2. I just found out last night that I'm a semi-finalist for a Fulbright ETA in France for the 2018/2019 school year! I know this isn't really the place for this, but I've been bursting with excitement after the past weeks of excruciating anxiety about not hearing anything from grad schools. At least I have some good news to tide me over, and maybe now I can actually put my focus back into the thesis projects I've been neglecting while refreshing my email

Yeah, ditto! I also really want to know what the next step will be! (Interview/further questions, etc.) I'm guessing we will get an email from the French commission sometime this week?  Anyway, good luck!!

Another France ETA semi-finalist here :D would love if you or @whale_shark would post if you hear anything about France's procedures for selecting finalists. I've been searching like crazy to see if they're one of the countries that do interviews and to find out how many semi-finalists they typically get, but I haven't found much besides that Fulbright typically picks 1.5x-2x as many semi-finalists as there are awards

I also just wanted to share this spreadsheet that I found while lurking on the 2017-2018 forum: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AlU2xDiiVhQjK3quPy6qXJuhgXYghzzG8L4YNT0unX0/edit?usp=sharing

It would be great if we all pooled our notifications so people can now how the process is moving along!

Second Edit: Turns out you have to request access to edit the above spreadsheet, so I copied the info to a fully public spreadsheet we can use! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YYWlybVsD-bXPOerZlJsDh4NZapiFVMsjObMQTMUU6c/edit?usp=sharing

Guys do you know if there's any difference funding-wise between public schools and private schools (when you're out of state)? I would think no since most schools offer tuition remission but I wonder. Just thinking cause I realized I'm a "non-resident" for UNC (completely forgot it was a public school lol).

My understanding is that there's not really a difference, at least not one that I've heard of from the grad students I've talked to at my undergrad University, which is public. From what I've heard it seems that there's sort of a standard fellowship that is offered, and it doesn't really differ between in-state students and out-of-state students.

Does anyone know how Rutgers sends out responses? Does it change on the status thing first, do they send an email? Phone?

It looks like in previous years they've sent email acceptance letters. I'm not really sure whether anything will change on the status website first, though. Don't really know where I would find that out either, unfortunately. I'm waiting and hoping for a yes from them as well! It also looks like it might be another week or so before we hear from them based on their history in the results archive here.

Edit: Looked further at their results on this site, and it looks like *way* back they used to do phone calls to let people know, but that was in, like, 2009. The most recent PhD response was an email. Back when they did phone calls, though, somebody said they saw their admissions status on the website before they got the call.

Though not for Boston, according to past forums. They're considerably later, for whatever reason!

I would imagine Boston sends responses pretty late considering their due date was only this past week I believe. I'm sure it will be forever before I hear from UConn too because their application isn't even due until February

I think the adcoms prefer students who have taken time off after undergrad. That was my faculty advisor's primary objection to my applying this year ("t'es trop jeune"), and why I am applying to several master's programs as well.

I actually had a somewhat similar conversation with one of my faculty mentors. We were talking about my applications, and she just felt she should warn me that, when she was in graduate school, almost all of the people who burned out and left the program before completion we're those who went straight from undergrad to a PhD program.

I bet we will hear something this week from some school. We've got to!

Also hmmm are schools closed or open during MLK day? Not sure?

I at least know IU Bloomington is closed for MLK day, so I assumed most others would be too. We'll probably start hearing from schools tomorrow at the earliest! I'm fairly certain Penn will announce their decisions this week ?

@Carly Rae Jepsen awesome, so glad to hear that your interview went well!

I truly have no idea where I stand with most of my schools... I know the French PhD process is more holistic because most programs receive so few applications compared to other humanities, but even so, I'm still incredibly nervous. I'm feeling pretty pessimistic about 2 as well, and have been detaching myself from hoping  for an acceptance lol. However, the others still have hope, I'm just trying not to get too confident!

My first result should be within the next week or so, and I am petrified. Oh well, all we can do is hope for the best! :)

Yeah I feel the same. I have no idea what to expect for admissions. I think I found Duke and UMichigan's acceptance rates for the French department, but all of the other schools I applied to seemed shrouded in secrecy. But I guess I should hear back from Penn soon and UMichigan not long after that! As for the rest, only time will tell...

  10. I'm jumping on this thread a little late, but I just finished my application last month and am anxiously awaiting all of the responses! I applied to Penn, University of Michigan, Boston, University of Connecticut, Duke, and Rutgers. I am getting a little nervous about one of my recommenders. She was very enthusiastic about writing letters of recommendation for me, but for some reason she is submitting each letter one at a time. I've had to email the week that each application is officially due to remind her. So far she has submitted anything late, but it's kind of a hassle to remind her every time a recommendation is coming up to be due.
