    Fall 2018 French

so happy to hear from everyone in this thread where y'all are going! Congratulations i am going to miss this thread, what an intense last few months. Should we give advice to next year applicants as a goodbye to this thread? For me, I would say: 1. Don't underestimate yourself, unlike undergrad admissions in grad school they judge your interests, your personal statements, recommendations etc. When I first applied I was doubtful I would make the cut, but they look at your application as a whole, not just a test score or transcript. 2. Give professors plenty of time to write your recommendations. 3. Give your very best writing samples. 4. During visits, be confident and don't be afraid to ask questions to grad students and faculty. 5. Give yourself time, don't check your email twenty times a day during late January and February. The results will come.

    WashU St. Louis 2018

I am having a tough time finding a place ready to move in August, most places want an immediate move-in. I found a Skinker Debaliviere place that looks nice but they would want me to sign an 18-month lease which I'd rather not do. I think I'll wait til June to look, and that way I can save more for the deposit. That is, unless something comes up on the Quadrangle website now which I doubt. I'm leaning towards University City or Clayton South of Delmar right now.

    When Did You Find Housing?

Thanks everybody for your advice! St. Louis seems to be like New York City--all housing listings require an immediate move-in. I will stop wasting my time for now I guess, and start looking in mid-June again. It sucks that it's like this but oh well.

    When Did You Find Housing?

Hey y'all, University housing apparently has no spaces available; students have until mid-May to notify them but it seems to me that many decide to renew their leases. I'm getting desperate, even though I won't be moving til August. I could lease with someone else, but the deposit fees are wild and I can't afford them at the moment. What should I do, just wait for university housing spots to open up or try to find a place elsewhere and borrow money for the deposit? And, just to help me with my timeline, when did y'all find housing when moving to a new city for grad school for the first time? Am I early, maybe? Reserving a place would give me so much peace of mind!

Maybe I'm more invested in music this year but oh lord, it's only April and fantastic albums can't stop rolling in. These are some of my favorites: MGMT Little Dark Age Sunflower Bean Twentytwo In Blue Kacey Musgraves Golden Hour Kali Uchis Isolation Father John Misty God's Favorite Customer Sofi Tukker Treehouse U.S. Girls In a Poem Unlimited Camila Cabello Camila The Neighbourhood (self-titled) Tinashe Joyride Kimbra Primal Heart Cardi B Invasion of Privacy Bishop Briggs Church of Scars Shame Songs of Praise Amen Dunes Freedom Porches The House Superorganism Superorganism I am starving for a new Vampire Weekend album. And that lady my account is named after, too
  7. For sure, I mentioned in your other thread how as a Latino I'm expected to study Hispanic rather than French literature by a lot of people. As for the article, I avoided that route in my personal statements. A couple of schools had some kind of diversity statement requirement and I filled that out, but in my personal statement I restricted the content to my interests. Now, of course when I tell my story my status as an ethnic minority comes up, but I don't like reducing myself to just that. It's an essential part of who I am, but not the entirety of me. I like that universities consider my story in context (an immigrant, etc.) and decide then that my accomplishments are more meaningful because of it, but I wouldn't want that to be why I got admitted. I got admitted because of my strong background in my field of choice first and foremost.

    Venting Thread- Vent about anything.

I can't find affordable housing near my university to save my life. I will wait a couple weeks to see if spots open up but I am becoming concerned. Also, this new job I found to save for moving...sucks. And while I may have found another better job--I am getting anxious at the thought of telling my boss of two weeks ( lol) that I am quitting.
  9. I would not get in debt unless I was guaranteed employment immediately after graduation. Go with Rutgers.

Furnishing an Apartment on a Budget?

Thank you so much everybody for the advice. I was thinking of maybe asking my parents for one of their mattresses (all my siblings but one are off to college so they have a few) but now that I think about it, I should look into one that's decent, even if it's not super cheap. I'll be on the lookout for furniture at the places y'all suggested (and will definitely look out for bed bugs or similar). My place will have a stove and fridge fortunately, but a microwave is a must!

Furnishing an Apartment on a Budget?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone here had experience furnishing an apartment on a budget. August will be the first time I'll live in an apartment with furniture of my own, so I'm trying to think where I can find a cheap bed and mattress, table, chair, and maybe a couch. I'm thinking of flea markets/used goods stores, Craigslist and Facebook marketplace but I was wondering if anybody here had experience getting affordable furniture somewhere else. Thanks!

    I've finally committed...now what?

I'll be saving to furnish my future apartment! Doing some reading will help, and some language learning to fulfill the language requirement.

Congratulations!!! You were one of the first members I interacted with here on gradcafe, and I've been following your story (not in a stalk-ish way I swear). I'm really happy to hear the news.

I got this job to help me pay for my apartment deposit and to maybe furnish it a little (or at the very least, get a mattress) and let's just say it's a crappy job. There were 3 employees who were very nice to me and the manager seems nice too (up til now at least) but this manager assistant was rude and gave me conflicting instructions. And tomorrow I have a 9-hour shift starting early in the morning.
