    Hey all--

I'm currently alternate listed for FLAS (2018-2019) but from my own department, I've been told that academic year FLAS for 2018-2019 will likely not happen, the way things are looking :( If anything, I was told that accepted students might get something for Spring 2019, if at all. It's super frustrating and terrible timing--I really was hoping to get FLAS to help me get through to my MA as my department does not prioritize pre-MA students for funding. Not trying to discourage anyone but this is just what I've been told so thought I'd share in case anyone else is trying to find a back up plan like I am.

oh wow I hope this is not the case :(

The recent budget for the U.S. department of Education did include funding for the program the FLAS comes out of and the application cycle recently opened up for schools to apply.

Is your school applying this cycle?

Thanks, Africanagyal, it is a little. There are others in my cohort who are also still waiting on summer decisions for things. I'm definitely getting used to waiting, since academia keeps me so busy like 90% of the time!

Where are you waiting to hear from?

I am waiting to hear from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I need to get used to the waiting game asap because it is killing me softly!

I did not get a GA position at a different department because I "might" get FLAS.

I heard that the US DoE will send out applications to schools in early May, and that schools should hear back from them late July/early August. My school said it was pretty likely that it'll work out because they've gotten the grant for some decades now.

I was told the same thing. I just wish the US DoE sent out applications earlier because this waiting game is no fun!

I'm still waiting on Yale Summer FLAS. I've also reached out to ask about dates with no response.

That's frustrating because the summer FLAS notifications should be out by now.

Deciding on a school (that will arguably impact our future careers) without having all of our financial information feels unfair.

I have offers from two master's programs and a PhD program. I would like to go the master's route, and I am a finalist for FLAS at both master's programs,  but, as is, I cannot choose the master's programs because I might not get FLAS, which would result in big tuition bills at both master's programs. That means I have to go with the safer route, the PhD, despite preferring the other schools.

I've asked for extensions from the schools, but none of them want to offer one. I don't want to say yes to all three, as that seems dirty, but it's just such a weird year for funding.

I definitely feel you on this. However, the recent US dept of Education's budget includes funding for the program that FLAS comes out of. There is still hope for some of us still waiting for FLAS announcements.

I fell in love with my best friend. He's already in a relationship. I tried to forget about him in the last few months, but I was not able to. So I told him about how I felt, and we've decided to go our seperate ways so I can stop suffering. We've known each other since 2012. I'm heartbroken.

All of my friends are getting married and having children. And at almost 26, I just wish I could be in a significant and meaningful relationship with somebody that genuinely loves me back, even if it's just for 3 months.

    I'm devastated.

I feel you! I was in the same same situation years ago. However, with time you will find someone or be completely fine with not having someone. You got this sista!

  7. Schools are waiting on the US department of Education to renew FLAS funding. Last time I heard, schools will hear back from the department of education in the Summer (Late July).

I am in the same boat because my top choice offered me FLAS given that their funding gets renewed. We might not hear back until a month before school starts :(

  8. Hi All,

Thought I'd start a thread on this.

I was notified that I will receive for FLAS given that the school receives Title IV funding from the Department of Education.

Does anyone know when schools will receive notification about the funding or the timeline from the department of education? I just want to know if I will get funding or not :wacko:

I've heard back! All within the past week.

I've only gotten rejections (unfortunately) but at least the ball is rolling. Also comforting myself with the fact that I'm applying for PhDs with just a B.A.

I have gotten admissions decisions from Cornell, Northwestern, and Brown - all Africana Phd, all no's.

That's 3 down, 4 PhD programs and 2 Masters programs to go. Pour a little out for me.

I have heard back with some good and bad news! I am applying with just a B.A as well

Hold on tight! I hope you hear back with some good news soon!

Good luck! Where did you apply? What do you study? Hopefully some news starts rolling in soon.

I am sooo late, I forgot my password ha

Thank you! Good luck to you too!

I applied to Cornell, UW Milwaukee, Temple, and UCLA. Research interests are Pre-colonial African economic policies, PanAfricanism, critical thinking in African communities etc. Still working on my elevator pitch as well.

What are yours? I am surprised there aren't a lot of people on this thread. I wonder if less people applied this cycle?
