Nothing from UT or Baylor here, and those are the only schools I applied to. Guess I should start working on building up my resumé for next year!
Yeah I felt pretty confident about Baylor, but I guess not? I checked my status online, and it said " under review" so I'm not sure what that means, especially bc I haven't gotten email from them

Did they email you or did you check the online app? If you checked it online is that information on the same page that you view your application status?
Applied/Rejected/Interview: CSU Stanislaus, Stanford, Utah, Denver, Pittsburgh, Arcadia, Thomas Jefferson
Its online on the application portal . hope you found it !

Cyto is great! I'm not sure about the program you're in, but I went through the UCONN program which included a lot of clinical information on chromosomal syndromes and a course involving ethics and genetics. I think that going through a cyto/molecular program will definitely strengthen your application (at least I'm hoping!). At least for me, I feel like it gave me a lot of exposure into genetic testing as GCs will have to be familiar with the type of testing a cyto/ mol tech does.
Currently I'm at Dartmouth. It's a smaller lab, but hospital labs usually are compared to commercial labs. One good thing about DH is that I was able to shadow 4 GCs relatively easily because I was already a hospital employee Have you gone on any rotations yet?
Yeah last year we did rotations through Baylor Miraca Cytogenetics & CMA(chromosomal microarray ) labs. This year is just focused on our thesis project! I agree learning the chromosomal syndromes definately helps. Going through this experience really taught me that I want to have patients or just more personal interaction with the people I am helping out. Yes being in the hospital has a lot of perks, that is the same way I was able to shadow Hopefully cytogenetics will help us both

Diagnostic Genetic people represent! I'm a Cytogenetics tech and one of my colleagues went through the MD Anderson program What's your concentration?
Oh how cool !!!My track is cytogenetics. I wanted the molecular but got put in cyto track and just went with it. Hopefully will give me some credibility as a scientist in my applications!
Where do you work?

Yes the acceptance rate will definitely be higher for it. And SLC does have like 3 scholarship tracks in the Match. But I am actually wishing for a small class size where I can get enough guidance from all professors and have a mentor.
Bdw which program are you in?
I am in an MSc for Diagnostic Genetics program. It's in a small school at MD Anderson called School of Health Professions

Hey same here! I just felt that such a big class may not be a personalized experience at all. I also didn't apply bcz New York is too expensive to live in. But the class size is my major reason too. Having had studied in such a big class before, I definitely want my Masters experience to be a lil personalized.
Yeah I completely understand about the class size. I did consider it, but also though bigger class size is more chance of acceptance (maybe?) haha and 25-30 is not uncontrollably large but def. not the same. The program I am in now has a class size of 4 and we have all our professors numbers and sometimes just text them for help pretty funny and nice to be close with them

That is so exciting!!! Hope it goes well!
Hey! Out of curiosity. I noticed you applied for Mt. Sinai but not Sarah Lawrence. Is there a specific reason you chose Mt. Sinnai over SLC?

I think Baylor will have what it needs to be a successful program. There are TONS of genetic counselors in Houston alone (I think I heard 80+ as a number once?), and the students at UThealth already do their lab rotation through Baylor so it seems like they have a pretty solid foundation. My PI is a big fan of Baylor and the research they do down there so I've only heard positive things about it.
Yeah I think it would be great but since I am already in Houston I am looking for programs where I can do out of town rotations or even out of the country if possible and the program doesn't have those connections just yet! But I have received some emails from them asking for some application material recently and feel hopeful Stay in touch for any responses from Houston or SLC!

Your transportation to the interview is for sure out of pocket. Some places offer to let you stay with a student instead of making you pay for a hotel, but not all programs do that. In my experience, they typically feed you lunch the day of your interview, and a dinner either the night before or the night of your interview if they choose to host a dinner with the current students.
Wow (fingers crossed) If i do get interviews it is going to be lots hahaha
By the way I also applied for UTH, Baylor, and Sarah Lawrence. How do you feel about Baylor being a brand new program?

For those of you who have previously interviewed,
Are the travel expenses when going for the interview all out of pocket? (Flight, Hotel/Stay, Food, etc.).

Hi everyone! Just finding out about this gradcafe website thanks to a friend. I have applied to Stanford, CSU-Stanislaus, Sarah Lawrence College, UTH, and Baylor(brand new program).
Has anyone else applied to these schools or received interview invites? I live in Houston and started looking up flights and hotels in San Fran & NY. The interview process will be expensive ( if I get some) but definitely worth it. Looking forward to hearing from you guys

Same! I checked my Baylor status just now. I'm a little nervous bc I felt confident about Baylor. We'll see. Let me know if you hear anything from them Also waiting to hear back from Stanislaus I hate that its taking soooo long!!
