  1. I wasn't expecting the interviews to be with 5 of the faculty! I freaked out too!! and it happens...I'm from the DSM area so that is a big factor in why I was attracted to Iowa. Wanzer-Serrano is also my main POI. My research is at the intersection of rhetoric and race, so he is of obvious interest! Looking forward to meeting you!! Please don't bully me!! ? DOPE! See you there as well!! I hope it works out for you! Iowa has some amazing media scholars.
  2. @pato I will be there!! Excited to learn a lot more about the program. What track?
  3. I think NCA is as magical as you make it!! I def second everything @aewers94 said!! Clear, thorough, well-articulated arguments are what has helped me (but some other questions stuff is certainly accepted). Best articulating the paper fit is important depending on the division. You may have to do some tweaking to ensure the call is clearly tied to your paper. I am always in favor of engaging presentations. You only get so much time and people really just want to know the "meat" of your work...so make it as interesting as you think it is! The worst is when someone reads their paper, and it feels as though they are slowly disappearing from the planet!! The conference can be as crazy or as chill as you make it. I prefer to go to as many presentations and lectures as possible - but I just love all the conversations that occur! Also, the food. I enjoy eating my way through the city it is hosted!! Because, food? Always, food.
  4. @swazibound @GreenEyedTrombonist I was accepted to the rhetoric track at UW-Madison too!! I'll see you in March!!
  5. @GreenEyedTrombonist It seems like there is a difference between how interviews went for the different sub-disciplines at Madison. Did your interview feel informal and not as "stuffy" as most grad interviews (appear) to be?
  6. @surprise_quiche How does that data apply to people who are applying for the MA/PhD track? I applied without a masters degree.
  7. @swazibound Who did you have your interview with (if you don't mind me asking....)? @surprise_quiche Were you told it was just Comm Science that was taking 4?
  8. @surprise_quicheFor ALL!? I didn't realize that is how they made admission decisions. When I talked to one of my POI's it sounded like the admission decisions were made for each sub-field (i.e. rhetoric faculty look at rhetoric applications and make the decision)...maybe I was mistaken? I'm going to assume no call at this point saying I was cut is good news...
  9. Salutations!! I'm new to the forum and wanted to try and gain some insight into two programs - UW-Madison and Iowa. 1) I had an interview with one of my listed POI at UW-Madison (I applied into the Rhetoric track) last week. It lasted about an hour, and we mainly talked about my research (felt more like an advising session than a formal interview), and then gave me the opportunity to ask questions about the program. I had previously (at NCA) had meetings with 2 other rhetoric faculty (both of which lasted over an hour), so he said "in my case," I wouldn't have a second interview - since the faculty who I wanted to work with felt like they already knew me. SO, my question...what is the likelihood of acceptance? Is getting the interview (for the rhetoric track) mean a likely acceptance? Does anyone generally know how that process works? 2) Last question! I have an interview this week with on my POI (in the rhetoric track) at Iowa. The email was sent to multiple people since it started with "Dear Applicant." Does anyone know what the interview process for Iowa looks like? I was surprised to get an email since I thought typically the rhetoric track didn't do interviews. Any insight is appreciated!!
