  1. hi all! congrats to those who received acceptances today!! it’s legitimately life-changing news and a lot of hard work has led up to this moment. i was accepted into mcgill’s qualifying year this morning, too. it is my first choice, but i was also accepted into ubc-o’s two year msw program. now i have to make a tough decision because i am based in vancouver and don’t speak french, so moving across the country will be a major change. also, mcgill’s qualifying year does not guarantee admission into the second year. ... that being said, ive *always* wanted to go to mcgill. and im not rly concerned about getting into the second year because i know i will make it one way or another! tbh im just shocked and this all feels a bit unreal. im working a block of overnight shifts at the moment and haven’t been able to sleep all day im very excited, just can’t believe this is actually happening for me!
  2. this is exactly how i understand it, as well. you can still apply if you arent fluent in french, but fluency is certainly valuable because of practicum placements. in the application itself, you are asked about your level of fluency, so i imagine that they consider it in conjunction with all components. my french is limited and i chose to be forthright about that in my application. when i hear back from the school (hopefully sometime this week -- eek!), i will post my answer here as it might provide some insight!
  3. congratulations on your acceptance! i actually came here to ask if anyone has heard from mcgill. it's interesting to me that not many folks on here mention it. what're your thoughts on mcgill, if you don't mind me asking? it is my first pick but now i am wondering if people know something about their school of social work that i don't, lol. btw i applied to mcgill for the qualifying year as i have a BA. i havent heard back from them yet, but there's still time imo. i also applied to ubc okanagan's two year msw program and was accepted.
  4. no my first choice is mcgill. but i totally agree that it's nice knowing i'm for sure doing it in september, either way!
  5. great, thanks for letting me know! id ubc-o your first choice??
  6. good luck! hopefully it doesnt take 4 months, this time! i'm definitely surprised by how on top of everything ubc-o is!
  7. awesome, thanks so much for replying! seems like i can always just accept the offer and see what happens later. how exciting that we might end up being in the same program i havent found any deadlines for the transcripts and criminal record check, either.
  8. thank you for the kind words! i am relieved to hear that i have a few options.
  9. for ubc-o, the acceptance offer is conditional based on your criminal record check and official transcripts. so i uploaded scans during my application and now have to send official, sealed transcripts by mail if i accept their offer.
  10. i received an acceptance via email from ubc-o, today. also for the two year msw program. this seems very early to me, too, considering that the deadline for applications was jan. 31. i have to say that, although i am excited about this, i am also stressed because i have to respond to the offer by feb. 26, which is so soon! what if i haven't heard back from any other schools by then? has anyone else been in this position before?! can you accept an offer and then retract your acceptance? >_<
  11. i applied to two year programs, but i also had a dream about being accepted into my top choice. i've told myself not to check the portals until february 1st as that was the earliest decision date i found for the programs i applied to, but even than it super early. i check my email compulsively though so yes, let's suffer together!
  12. hi everyone first time poster, here. i made it through admissions without creating an account but wanted to share my experience while waiting it out. i've applied to the two year msw programs at mcgill and ubc-o. i completed a BA (psychology major, gsws minor) in 2016 with a cgpa 3.95 (so close to a 4.0 ). i have experience working in community services, mental health settings, and counselling programs with youth, families and adults. i feel very confident in my SoP for mcgill but am not in love with my SoP for ubc-o as i found the format challenging. on jan. 19th, i received an email from ubc-o saying that my application is "under review". no updates from mcgill, yet. just waiting it out good luck, everyone. i hope that we can be here to support one another during this anxiety-provoking time.
