  1. Sure. However, based on this info alone judging your chances of getting into a strong school is not really plausible. The key info is: 1. Where you went for your undergrad and MBA? 2. What and where did you publish? 3. What company did you work for? 4. Projected GRE scores? 5. Who’s going to write your LoRs?
  2. I am 5th generation college graduate and if I manage to complete my PhD, I will also be 3rd PhD in the family (although not successively). No one from my family was a professor, however.
  3. Hi phdmang, I used this ranking as my benchmark when I applied for MGMT PhDs: http://www.tamugarankings.com/rankings/2017-2/?utm_source=Mays+Faculty%2FStaff%2FPh.D.+Students+from+website&utm_campaign=886d49dc84-Mays+Weekly_Oct_30_2017_&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_82ed221d8e-886d49dc84-350033561&mc_cid=886d49dc84&mc_eid=37440a5407 However, there are a few caveats: 1. The ranking does not include non-academic journals such as HBR. 2. The ranking is a composite index of all top MGMT journals. Since I did strategic management, I had to be more precise. Nevertheless, Rice ranks quite favorably in key metrics so that's a great sign.
  4. Interesting. Does it have force touch? I have an iPhone 7 and I really love that feature.
  5. Thanks a lot! Great advice and I’ll probably follow it if everything goes as planned.
  6. I’m actually looking at the one you have (touchbar, 512 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM) as the touchbar ones have better CPUs due to thermals and some other perks (Samsung vs. Sandisk SSDs etc), but also importantly they have more ports. Actually I was definitely planning on playing Hearthstone since that has been my boredom killer for the last two years or so, but that runs flawlessly on my iPhone and current laptop, so I guess I’ll a new Mac would eat it for breakfast. And I’m definitely waiting for enrollment before making the decision. Specced how I like it, it’s still around $2100 with edu discount applied. Also, do you have experience with Magic Mouse 2? Is it worth $80?
  7. Sounds great! I currently have a business laptop with i7 4600U (ancient Haswell), 8GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD. It's flawless for everything except the most extreme Monte Carlo Excel workloads. I was looking at 13" Macbook Pro with 512 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM just to be on the safe side of future proofing. I'm guessing they'll release 8th gen Intel quad core 13" by summer, although I doubt the dual cores would struggle at anything I throw at them. Quad cores would be so nice, though. Regarding gaming, I'm a console guy myself so it's not a big deal. I really only play Civ 6 and that does seem to be out of reach for the integrated card, but oh well, it's not the end of the world.
  8. What PCs do you guys use? I'm currently on Windows, but I'm thinking of getting a Macbook Pro 13" when I start my PhD. Any experience? Is the keyboard good for a lot of typing? Also, does Mac potentially lack anything for non-compute intensive workloads that I, as a PhD student, would need? I'm going for a PhD in Business so I doubt anything more than Excel would be required.
  9. Received and accepted an offer last week. It was a tremendous relief.

Hi everyone! I'm enrolling in MSU's PhD program this Summer, so i am interested in understanding the city a little bit more. First, what are some interesting entertainment avenues (bars, pubs, clubs, bowling alleys etc)? Secondly, what sort of living accommodations do you recommend? I know it's a personal preference type of thing, but for example, are there companies that do match you with potential roommates? What are housing rates that are appropriate (I'm thinking without roommates at first)? It doesn't need to be fancy, but it has to be close to the school or at least close to the bus lines as I won't drive. Also, since I am an international student, how does the lease work? Do I use the stipend papers I will receive in the future as proof of income and that's it or do they usually require something else (deposit maybe)? Thanks.
