  1. Hi guys what do you think about the pros/cons of both degree?
  2. Hey guys, one of my friend who is supposed to start her phd in philosophy in a US university, received a news that her program will defer 2020 admissions to 2021. She normally received fully funded offer but now that is the situation she is in. I was wondering if something would happen in our field, political science. Is this decision of the department or the university? I think that seems a department decision, but I am not sure. Do you guys think this is a unique case or we may see such decisions from other universities or departments?
  3. Can I assume that I am going to be rejected in Georgetown at this point? Has anyone get rejected from GU?
  4. I did not see waitlists posted as well. Finger crossed! At least, I hope we are waitlisted.
  5. So far I did not see a rejection from GU on the survey. I guess they sent all acceptances. Can we say that we are going to receive rejection those who are still waiting from GU?
  6. Nothing from Georgetown yet. I hope it does not mean rejection.
  7. Does anyone know anything about Maryland-College Park? Supposed to release results around this week. Any insight from the department/friends/POIs?
  8. It will be another silent day. I guess professors (adcomms) have classes to teach in the first couple of days of weeks, and do not have time to meet and discuss applications. (Just guessing) I still have not heard about 5 schools, which are supposed to send the results last week (based on last year's results survey). Waiting is killing me.
  9. So I guess, the week is over. No more official letters from department until monday, but at least, POIs can still email us in case they admit us. Should we wait news during weekends?
  10. Can we say that Boston College CP subfield are not out given the acceptance and rejection posted are for theory?
  11. Sorry, I did not add it: I have not heard anything.
  12. Any claim for Boston College? Which sub-field? I also applied for BC. Mine is CP.
  13. I also applied for Rutgers (CP subfield). They usually inform around late Feb.
  14. Congrats to this poster! I hope to say the same thing.
  15. Last year, Rice sent out the decisions on the Jan 19 based on the result page. Any news about Rice?
  16. I personally do not have good GRE scores. (But I am sure that I am good at math, or writing in English). I respect those who have high GRE scores. It is a skill that I do not have. I also do not know the answer to how my GRE score would help me in my academic career. Yes, it is a skill, but I am not sure if it is a useful one to invest time, energy, and money. While GRE may show a level of knowledge of words/complicated reading structures/math. Ironically, Pols professors try to write papers as simple as possible, especially in quantitative studies. While in quant, scholars prioritize math, it is no longer important to know interest rate problems or round area calculation, etc. Statistic programs provide what we need. If one is not satisfied with the results of the software as statisticians, they can use manual regression/Anova/Manova, etc. formulas/equations. GRE math does not teach how to do the manual calculation. All the methods and techniques are a different skill that a grad student develops over time. Where is the role of knowing GRE math? - Nothing. I support what Ohio tries to do. I think GRE should be dropped as a requirement for Pols Ph.D. programs. #GreExit
  17. Duke will not accept new phd students in this year. if duke pols faces economic problems then which school does not.
  18. I am doing PhD in political science in a public school ranks of #70-80 in the US. I received a news from the professor who works in best choice university (#40-50) that they may likely accept me if I apply again. My current advisor is the one of the best and well known person who works in my research area. I still do not know how to explain that I will reapply again. While I want to leave the program, I still want her to be in my dissertation committee. I am worried about her reaction when I tell her that I will re-apply for my best choice again. (She knows X university was my best choice). What do you think that I should do? How should I explain that I want to apply for another university? What is good way of doing that? My current program’s low placement, low stipend, and not enough methodological training made me to reapply again this year. As everyone does, I am worried about finding job in the US after PhD. I am an international student. I speak two languages other then English. My GRE scores are low and I am not going to retake the exam. (I hate GRE). Meanwhile, I am planning to apply for several other schools ranks #15-25. I already had MA in another country before starting the PhD. I have improved my skills in several statistical programs, took several quantitative courses. Presented papers in conferences in two years. Despite a low GRE, would these improvements and developments in my career affect departments decisions in a university #15-25? What should I do? should I reapply for a program that ranks much better and also fits my research interests or stay in my current program to work with my current well known advisor?
  19. No, I would not go without funding. Yes, if both students accept, they cannot give me funding. My situation depends on their decision I already have a funded offer from another school but, the school that I am waiting is my best choice. If that school gives funding I will change my decision. I emailed DGS too much I guess. She told me she would give an answer on Monday or Tuesday but she did not, and I emailed her on Tuesday and still, she did not reply. So I understand that she may wait for the two students for their decisions. It seems that two students are their best students and they really want to have them, that is why they give such an extension after April 15. That is my judgment. Or she just waits me to give up to wait for the funding. Anyway, I hope the waiting game ends this week.
