  1. I found out last Thursday from my institution that I was waitlisted but I got my letter today. I scored a 12.4 on Committee 3. There's not much information to go on but I think that's a bit low to get off the waitlist. I did get OGS again this year though so at least there's that. Congratulations to everyone who got it!

Alright so there is no rhyme or reason. Maybe by committee. Why am I obsessing it’s not like I don’t have anything else to do ?

Yeah I'm a quota applicant in Ontario and me and the other person nominated in my department haven't received any emails yet.

Edit: last name P, in case that matters.

Usually they only let the successful applicants know. At least, that's what my school did last year. ?

My school let everyone know. They definitely let successful people know first but us less fortunate were soon after.

  4. If you're not a direct applicant there's also a good chance your school will let you know your results before you receive direct communication from SSHRC. There's an online portal that the schools have access to where SSHRC releases the results. Depending on your school they might notify you once they know, I know my school does from last year.

  5. I just heard from my department's grad chair that SSHRC doctoral results are going to be released this week. Last year I was mailed a letter, but also had my school email me when they were told the results. I assume this year with everything being electronic that everyone will receive word from their school as soon as they're released hopefully.

No, OGS is only for one year. It's non-renewable.

This isn’t true. You can get OGS up to 4 times, but not past your 4th year. You just need to apply for it every year.

    I was waitlisted, too.

I have heard of 5 people just in my program being waitlisted (and there’s 6 graduate programs in my department). That just seems like a weirdly high amount of waitlists to me...

  8. Hi everyone! I just found out I was awarded OGS (yay!) but my friends who all had it last year were all waitlisted. I know that the government delayed confirming how many awards each school had and was just wondering if anyone heard about the number of awards being cut back this year?

  9. Hey! I don't know if there's any restrictions against this or something, but it would be really helpful to see people's programs of study who were successful. I was thinking maybe we could set up something Google Drive or Dropbox or something like that if anyone was willing to share? I've seen some older ones but it would be great to see some more recent ones.

Also I got my score today. 10.6! So close for my first try! Makes me feel less terrible about myself though to know that I was pretty close. Just got to improve by 1 or 2 points next year! (Or better yet 5 and get CGS ?)

I'm wondering about OGS results, but at the same time feeling pretty down about the whole thing.

Yeah OGS is definitely still the hope. Unless the amount of OGS scholarships allocated to my department changed I feel like I have a very good shot, a much better shot than SSHRC at least ?.

My school just informed me I was waitlisted. This was my first time applying - starting PhD in the fall. I did not expect to be as crushed as I feel. I did receive 92k and 82k over four years respectively in my funding offer from two of the programs I applied to. I guess I should be thankful for that. I am just feeling very demoralized as everyone who helped prepare my SSHRC basically told me I was a shoo-in, which really instilled a lot of false hope. I am not sure what my score is yet. So now I am sitting at my part-time job, wishing i could be in my bed lamenting life.

I feel this so hard. When I first was going to apply I wasn’t even sure I would get out of the school, but then people I worked with in the department were telling me they thought I would get it and it definitely got my hopes up. Oh well. Always next time. And you still have hope for this time!

Just got mail from SSHRC. Like others have mentioned, they did send it out on April 30th. I got mine two days later - living in Montreal.

Received SSHRC with a score of 16.7/20.

Feeling quite ecstatic and light-headed after not having received FRQSC a couple days prior...

Congratulations! Good to know that the mail is starting to arrive. Hopefully the rest of us (at least in Canada) get mail tomorrow or hear from our schools by tomorrow! Going through another weekend would be brutal.

Thank you! ? I wonder why Western in particular was delayed.

I think the other grad finance/scholarship person was away this week so I’m guessing Paula had some extra work... especially with the whole OGS delay. Oh well, at least we know that we’ll know in under 24 hours! Fingers crossed!

Supposedly the portal for Western hasn’t been updated yet for any of the programs, according to my grad program advisor.

Awe man really? That probably means that we won’t hear the results until tomorrow.

WOAH!! I am in SHOCK!! just received notification from my institution that I received the CGS-D! First-time applicant, currently completing my MA.

I was literally just about to write that I’ve lost hope for today! I’m definitely on the edge of my seat now.

Also congratulations! You must be ecstatic!

The are two likely reasons for this. First, the number of applicants fluctuates. Its hard to guarantee a date when decisions will be made if they are unsure ahead of time how much total work will need to be done. And beyond total applications, the number per committee, per discipline, etc. fluctuates wildly making it even harder to predict when everything can be finalized.

Add to that a government culture that HATES committing to deadlines because every possible decision requires the buy in of multiple people and you have a recipe for constant delay. If you have ever been in a federal government hiring competition, you will know that respecting the time and anxiety levels of applicants is not a consideration, because its impossible to do.

Yeah I know the government doesn’t like to commit to deadlines, but I feel like they release them about the same time every year within a week or so and they do already commit to the end of April, so why not just go with a set date of April 30th or May 1st?

  17. This is purely an off my chest comment, but I really don’t understand why they can’t just pick an official day they release the results and stick to it. They say the end of April anyways so why not just say April 30 (and actually release them on April 30) and we all won’t be wondering if today’s the day starting halfway through the month. Anxiety and stress related things are known issues in grad students so I don’t really understand why they couldn’t make the whole situation a little less precarious. Then we could more easily put it out of our minds until the official day. It’s such a small thing that doesn’t seem like it would be hard to implement, and it would make such a big difference... for my anxiety at least. And then an online portal for everyone. Just pop the results in there April 30.

Sigh. Bracing myself for another week/weekend in the dark: “The delivery standard for regular mail sent inside Canada is: Two business days for local mail. Three business days within the province. Four days for national mail.”

You should try asking your awards officer once the tweet goes out. I know not every school tells their students but doesn’t hurt to ask! Based on previous years’ threads it looks like my school does and they even said earlier in the year that they email you the result/show it in our online portal once they know. So I’m really banking on knowing tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest... I don’t know if I’m mentally and emotionally prepared for the off chance they don’t tell us once they get the results ?
