  1. I won a Vanier so I had to contact SSHRC and tell them i would decline an award. When I spoke to a person at SSHRC Friday, they stated I had won a SSHRC, the letters are definitely being mailed Monday and Tuesday, and letters hadn't been mailed for sure on Friday. And institutions do not know yet. I was really surprised to recieve this info. Well since I declined the SSHRC hopefully someone here who might end up on the waiting list gets it! Last year I was on the waitlist and was not funded.
  2. So, no one from my school has actually reached out to me yet about recieving a Vanier, whether to tell me next steps or to congratulate. I am wondering if I was supposed to notify them? I did tell my supervisor of course who is happy about it, but I am a little puzzled about what to do next. Is that weird that no one has reached out to me? So I definitely won't be saying anything publicly until CIHR gives a go ahead.
  3. Because this thread has been supportive and informative, I wanted to update with my result. I got a Vanier and the ranking was quite high. All the scores were above 8, with research potential and leadership the highest and equal. - My propsed research is very unusual and I had taken a huge risk with it and the committee I selected. To be honest, I didn't think I stood a chance. Because I fast tracked from a Masters to PhD, I had a head start on this particular project because it was supposed to be my Masters (then grew in scope). Then again, I didn't have a Masters so that seemed to counterbalance that. - I never held a tricouncil Masters scholarship due to poor undergarduate grades. So, it looks like Vanier may not have looked at my attached undergrad transcript and likely only considered my graduate grades because if they had, there is no way I would have scored that high. - I have a pretty solid publication record, so I think that helped. - to be blunt, I am kinda old to be a PhD student (?) so my leadership as a result was stacked because I had a career and loads of volunteering before commencing graduate studies. I continued some volunteering during this time. - I worked extremely hard on my proposal, it took a year to write and 17 revisions. Only 3 other people agreed to read it and offer feedback, and they provided some feedback. Most of the revisions though were my own, knowing that I had to scope down and make my topic clearer. I wasn't able to attend any of the university's info sessions or workshops because I have family obligations. So I didn't get much help at all from the university, nor was I able to view a successful application during that time. - I was the first person in the waitlist last year for a tricouncil doctorate and I did not apply for a Vanier because at the time I was still enrolled in my Masters. To be honest, the lack of mentorship and guidance on this was pretty impactful and I am still in shock I got a Vanier. I think the reviewers probably liked my proposal, it connects in a very relevant manner to my background and pubs and I think they saw that. I hope this helps someone for next year, because my advice is to concentrate on writing a very sincere and personally relevant proposal, and don't sell yourself short in the leadership letter! You just never know. Don't fret about the number of pubs; instead, focus on a few great posters, talks or papers connected to your topic. If you don't have any mentors nor a record of success in your department, don't feel down because someone has to be first, afterall. I hope to be around to answer questions of anyone has any, and congrats to the fellow scholars and best of luck to those who reapply!
  4. Add me to the list! I feel like there is so much riding on the tricouncil funding. It will be the deciding factor between my finishing quickly to salvage my PhD, or being an excellent scholar. It is my last year for eligibility and my household with dependents cannot afford my lack of funding anymore :( Last year I was waitlisted, so close but so far.
  5. Thanks! Sounds like I am joining the waitlist crowd, but I still don't have my letter or score. Does not bode well either way.
  6. Does anyone know what "recommended but not funded" really means?
  7. Still no letter here in metro Vancouver. Anyone from SFU receive letters or emails of waitlist/rejects? I'm under the impression accepts were emailed to successful applicants already.
  8. This is indeed a very fascinating and relevant topic. Well done! I know I am personally very excited to follow your progress on it. I saw you were considering leveraging this fellowship to gain acceptance into other institutions, and I certainly think you could get a matched entrance scholarship or similar.
  9. Amazing, congrats! I feel like I really should have applied last year like you did. I was a masters student at the time,l too, no transcripts also. I was told by my school that they wouldn't even forward it without transcripts and my chances were low without then, even with pubs and conference presentations. Lesson learned, go for it anyway. I'm not sure what happened this year yet, still waiting and hoping for a miracle (in Metro Vancouver area, no letter yet, no email from SFU about any outcome). Edited to add: you must have one hell of a project proposal. Selfishly, I'd love to read it / know what you are working on because that's a super high score regardless! You've done something right!
  10. I was wondering this too. I did email grad awards on Friday, but there's been no response. It honestly sounds like a huge mess, all these people saying different things. I appreciate your advice, my campus isn't the Burnaby campus but perhaps a phone call would suffice.
  11. Really?! Oh dear. I've been killing my refresh button since 11am but I never received an email from SFU be it DGS, or grad awards, and my supervisor hasn't heard either. This is so bizarre! Maybe they only did successful applicants today and are doing the rest later? I'm currently in 2nd year PhD here at SFU.
  12. Oh, you are both SFU. Congrats! I haven't heard by now, so I'm assuming I didn't receive one. This is pretty hard to take, to be honest.
  13. Wow, this is astonishing. I'm not sure if they are always this slow, but it definitely doesn't seem like a great idea to hoard the information while other universities are emailing students (on weekends even!). Well, at least we know that no response from the office so far doesn't automatically mean rejection!
  14. Very helpful, thanks, hopefully they'll put us out of our misery one way or the other!
  15. Hello everyone and congrats to those who already have their successful results. Anyone hear from SFU hear today about results? I'm trying not to get ahead of myself or read anything into it, I did not email SFU's office today though as their correspondence about the application advancing through last January did specify I'd find out via regular mail.
