If you're applying M* then yes, I believe Yale only releases March 15th.

EDIT: It was that way back when I applied in 2014. It was all automated and results were posted in the afternoon to the portal.

Even if the 15th falls on a Sunday?  They're pretty committed to this whole 15th business...

They sent out formal acceptances tonight it looks like. I don't know if that has anything to do with the subdiscipline or not (I'm in World Religions World Church) but in any case I accepted the offer since this was my number one choice.

So are we pretty sure that all subfields are out?  No one has posted on the results section aside from 2.  Should we abandon all hope?

Moral Theology! I'm sorry to hear that. Did you apply again?

I was liturgical studies.  Thanks for the condolences.  I did apply again, but I have not heard anything as yet.  I wonder if that means I'm dinged...  Have all subfields gone out yet, or just Moral Theo and WRWC?  Does anyone know?  What number are you on the waitlist?

I was notified this morning that I'm on the waitlist for Notre Dame's MTS program. Does anyone have a sense as to how likely it is for someone on the waitlist to get an offer? I assume it's quite low, especially for this program. Though the person who emailed me told me he thinks there's a decent chance they get to the waitlist this year, in case that's helpful information for anyone else.

I hope everyone is having a happy Valentine's day!

What program did you apply for the MTS for?  WRWC?  I was waitlisted last year and didn't get in.

To my knowledge, many of these schools come out with results around March 15.

If you are in at Notre Dame, you will hear back around Feb. 22/23.  If you don't hear back then, you got dinged.  I was waitlisted last year to their MTS.  The year before that I was dinged.  Hence I know.  From experience.

I think any answer to that question can only be speculative.

Every hiring manager I've had in the last ten years has done some basic web searching for me, and the competition for RS PhD spots is much fiercer than for most job openings. Why take the risk? Unless the whole adcom are luddites, odds are someone's going to have a rummage.

So how do you purge your internet presence?  Delete accounts?  Or just delete any polarizing posts or anything suggestive of politics/religion?

Yes. In particular there are schools that have a strict policy of no interviewing *stares at Yale* so faculty use social media to get an idea of who you are. Some faculty violate this but that's a slightly different issue.

Academia.edu is a route that many check to see if applicants use. On a personal level, I strongly suggest people not use Academia as it's a front to steal your intellectual property and monetize it.

I know for a fact that my advisor does extensive searches on everyone they might take on as a student. They also print it all out and keep a folder and for your annual review they show it to you.

You can take that as you will but speaking to my own experience - my advisor is amazing and requires bimonthly meetings with all of their students over a meal. They go above and beyond to cultivate a personal relationship with you, check in on life stuff, make sure you're not studying too much, etc.

What if our political leanings and theological leanings are evident on the face of our social media accounts?  Are we S.O.L. for every school whose adcom members are of a different political/theological bent?  I am worried that my extracurriculars will sink me. I've said some pretty jerky things online before (cough...twitter).  How devastating is all that stuff?

Nope, just an email from academia.edu that someone Googled me from the location of one of the places I applied...

Does this happen? And how do I set up such an alert system?  Do schools use google results to screen applicants???

My interest is in understanding the homily as a liturgical event (part of why i applied to Garrett). besides seminary greek and hebrew, i took the masters german reading course at ND a few summers ago. so that's all i listed on the app. my latin is very out of practice though i would jump at the opportunity for a refresher. I talked to a friend in the program a few weeks ago who mentioned a few different people i could work with depending on how my question were to take shape--but that's fantastically hypothetical at this point (and I can't say I have a good feeling about the process at this point).

Cool.  That's actually a really interesting question--especially in light of the Church's longtime teaching that the liturgy is the "privileged place of evangelization."   How many liturgy applicants are there for ND's theology phd?  I wonder if it's over/underrepresented in terms of theology applications.  Have you heard any other interesting tidbits about their selection process/program in general?

Turns out I still have an account. Found this when I'm supposed to be prepping for tomorrow morning. I have applications in for 2 liturgy programs (ND and GETS). Haven't heard anything yet from ND, and GETS' deadline is Monday so i don't expect to have any communication for a bit.

I'm also a ND liturgy applicant.  What is your area of interest in liturgy?  What faculty members did you want to work with?  Do you have much in the way of language training?  Latin/Greek?  I'm happy to have found you.  There seem to be fewer liturgy applicants on this board than NT/Patristics students.

  11. Hey what do y'all think of reusing statements of purpose?  I was waitlisted to a program last year, and this year I basically just reused last year's SOP but with minor tweaks and adjustments.  It really was what I meant to say, and I think it was a pretty good SOP...so why change it?  Should I have?

It’s applicants with poor preparation (bad grades, no M*, inappropriate coursework) and things like disastrously bad GRE scores that don’t survive the institution’s minimum.

Regarding the M*, very few schools explicitly state that they won’t take students without a M* but a lot won’t take them.

With GREs, usually there’s an institution minimum that is low 150V but then the department sets a screen (example) of 161 (really it’s whatever they think reflects their ideal student). 1-2 faculty are required to read all of the screen-out apps to see who should be moved back in. A number are always moved back in but you’re still fighting against a deficit.

My school gets a number of NT/HB apps that loved biblical studies but only took 1-3 seminars with minimal language preparation and/or they didn’t sit down with an advisor about how their application needs to shift when applying to a graduate program in Arts & Sciences and to avoid confessional statements.

Awesome answer.  What's a "confessional statement"?  I'm Catholic--can I not even hint at this in my S.O.P. (even at Notre Dame/Marquette)?  How about writing sample?  Can writing sample show that I'm attacking a particular controversy from a Catholic point of view?

Is it really half of applicants that aren't serious contenders?  This actually makes me feel much better about my own app...

  13. 5 hours ago, xypathos said:

A lot. It depends on the program but a lot of people want to be NT scholars so I'd say that and ethics tends to always get the most applicants in any school. At my institution, of the ~150 I'd say close to a 1/4th are for NT but only half of those are taken seriously, so 20'ish.

XYPathos, why are only half taken seriously?  What is wrong with/dieficient about those who aren't?  Is it that they didn't fill out the app right (that level of bad) or they have mediocre grades/GRE scores?

Thanks for the feedback! I hope you're right.

Can anyone offer insights into how important diversity is to admissions boards? I know it can vary from university to university, but in general, are your odds of getting accepted marginally higher if you're a minority? Drastically higher? Not higher at all? I've heard conflicting reports on this from professors. What have others heard?

The politically incorrect truth:  DRASTICALLY.  HIGHER.

Out of curiosity, why do you think you can't improve your verbal score? I feel like verbal is much easier to improve than quant or writing.

While I agree that she can improve her verbal with practice, I think quant is the easiest to improve.  Just learn the geometric formulas and do a bunch of practice problems...It's not high level math that is indicative of IQ.  Verbal stuff, especially reading comprehension, probably has more to do with native ability following a line of reasoning.  But maybe I'm wrong.  Just my impression.

*edit above: i meant quant and writing in my parenthetical remark.

@rejectedndejected I think for a lot of first tier programs (e.g., Duke) 161 takes me out of the running right away...I feel hopeful that my other credentials as well a SOP will speak at ND since I'm closer to the average. I am applying to CJA, so we are not in competition :) Hope to see you at interview weekend! I don't know when they start reviewing, but based on the results page from previous years, it seems like interview invitations go out end of Jan or beginning of Feb. I figured out their average because I emailed admissions a while back and asked about stats for theology PhD admissions. Here is the reply:

Our average GRE scores for admitted students were: 164 Verbal, 156 Quantitative and 4.8 on the Analytical Writing. The average GPA was 3.67. These scores are typical for the last five years. We had 142 applicants, extended offers to 15 and admitted 11.

Wow, that is great information.  Thanks so much.  I hope to see you at interview weekend as well.  If your language training is strong, you probably have a fighting chance (likely far better than me) at getting an interview.

Are you sure those are the PhD averages?  That seems like it would be closer to their MTS average.

@rejectedndejected mine was only 161 ? We have a shot at Notre Dame if we are awesome in every other way, lol. Their average is 164.

If I reapply next year I will probably only apply abroad because even if I study more I don't think I could increase my verbal score...whereas my others scores could actually go down (even though everyone says that nobody cares about quant and verbal, I'm secretly hoping those scores would help me a bit).

161 isn't bad.  Especially with your quant., which schools are looking at more and more.  What ND program are you applying to?  Do you know when they start reviewing?  Also, how'd you figure out their average is 164?

yeah, my GRE verbal score was pretty low by TT standards....even though I have strengths that should be able to compensate, I fear my app will be thrown out without a second look...you often hear that at TT schools that receive a ton of apps, their first filter to narrow the pool is GRE ?

If you don't mind my big-nosed prying, what was your verbal?  Mine's a middling 164, and I'm thinking of retaking.  Didn't get a chance to after last year because life is super busy.

New to the forum. Applying for NT PhD's. I have an M.Div and MABL from a conservative seminary and finishing a ThM at Duke. Here is the list:

Duke (PhD and ThD), ND, Yale, Chicago, PTS, Toronto, UVA.

    Good luck everybody!

Does anyone know when Notre Dame and Yale begin reviewing PhD applications, especially for the Liturgical pool?  I thought Notre Dame called for interviews in late January...
