  1. Update: Folks, the virtual campus visit that I had this week was awesome. I literally have never seen faculty joking and laughing with me during interviews, and saying things like bring it on; so it was super pleasant. They gave a lot of positive hints. They also said that they will submit their recommendation next week to management but said they have no control over the process after management has it, and asked me to please be patient. I am anticipating an offer in two to six weeks and will keep you posted about how it goes...the last campus visit that I had in Pennsylvania back in March was also awesome but unfortunately I learned the university management had cancelled the position due to Covid19, so the offer never materialized.  I am on Cloud 9 at the moment and haven't been able to sleep for the past few days from my excitement!!! I really wish you all the best for successful and happy jobs search/interview experiences, too!! ?

  3. Hi Folks,

    I have another update:

A brand new job was recently posted in my field the other day, so I applied for it.

That makes me happy, because some positions do seem to be getting posted despite Covid19. ?

But the bad news is that one of my former committee members has been overwhelmed, and declined to be a referee for any more applications until Fall 2020.

    ?

I guess I can begin the default route of "building up my CV" by writing and submitting papers for journals and hoping they get published.

I started my PhD two and a half years ago and am expected to defend this Fall, I only have 3 publications so far (conference proceedings, one of them very prestigious). I was due to present part of my work to four conferences but they were cancelled due to COVID-19, if there isn't a second wave they will probably be held sometime in the Fall.

Hello, I have a few questions, if you don't mind me asking:

What are your goals in terms of jobs/career?

Is your field in computer sciences?

I was presenting a lot at conferences and I also have papers from conferences published as abstracts, but I was advised that peer-reviewed journal articles or pee-reviewed book chapters are necessary to compete in the tenure track job market, especially in disciplines such as computer science.

At that point, I stopped presenting papers at conferences and have focused my efforts on those latter things.

    Thoughts?

    Thank you!

  5. Hello, I just wanted to provide an update:

Despite the glaring website notice that "XXX university has implemented a hiring freeze", I was contacted yesterday for a virtual campus visit that consists of research/teaching demonstration and additional interview.

I am confused about this contradiction, but still super excited, and praying that it goes well!!

    Ciao!!

Let it be heard, I remain positive for the future of academic AND other careers, even if it does take a bit of time to get back to normal (hopefully even better - but that's a push)

Hello and thank you for this post.

I commend you for remaining positive in these uncertain times, as difficult as it may be.

I had a discussion with someone and we both agree that when things start to normalize, and it looks like they will normalize soon as social distancing measures are being lifted slowly...there will be a temporary surge of jobs either re-posted or newly posted.

I am beginning to see that already happening. This week, several new jobs were posted in my field in which I applied to two that seemed to be a really good fit!!

In the next month or so, I am anticipating another interview God-willing, perhaps virtually if I have all my cards properly aligned.

Don't give up and hang in there...we can do this!!

I think we are now all aware of that google doc, and have been bombarded in facebook feeds and otherwise with news of hiring freezes and furloughs. It would be nice if the thread can at least stay positive (any success in the market or ideas on how to move past it?) instead of being another forum for alarmism and fear mongering--there are just too many of those, no matter how "right" it might be.

Hello, and thank you for this post.

I agree 100% that we should at least stay positive.

To answer your questions, success in the market and ideas to move past the crisis can be achieved as follows: 1) waiting it out, which means we are essentially in a waiting game; and 2) continue to publish in the mean time, so that the chances of landing an interview are adequate.

Anyone have any other thoughts and suggestions?

Lot of hiring freezes, reneging of offers/contracts, furloughs, salary reductions, and I've heard of at least one SLAC closing up shop.

If you aren't worried and thinking about non-academic alternatives, you should be.

Hello, thank you for posting this link.

I think I already replied to an earlier post that had the same link to state that it is not entirely accurate.

For example, it shows that some universities sent out emails and cancelled positions, but I certainly did not get such as email from those schools, and in fact, when I contacted the university, they said the buildings are literally closed and they would have an update for me once they re-opened.

Another university shows that an interview was cancelled, but again, I was interviewed by the very same university, virtually!

Another university just posted a brand new job this week!

    And yet another!

    I applied to both.

So, once again, I would have to take that list with a grain of salt...

I think it may be better to actually look at the individual university websites and see if new jobs have been posted, and if they are, then apply away!!

This recent Reddit post by a philosophy professor who is also an interim DGS predicts a brutal cycle next year and urges current applicants to take funded offers now rather than try again next cycle for a more desirable spot.

I was given the same advice, if I received an offer, I was told to take the offer, and after a few years, if one really wanted to change their mind, at least there would be experience under the belt!!!

I had a virtual Interview even before all of this weirdness in the world. It was like an intermediary stage. I hope yours went well!

    Hello and thank you!!

I thought it went pretty well given that some of them asked very tough questions while others asked 'easier' ones. I hope they contact me at some point for a virtual job talk. I will certainly update this post if they do!!

Not to add to anyone's anxiety but tenured faculty can be laid off if the university declares a financial exigency.  It is not very common though, but it does happen from time to time and the college/university usually gets rid of programs/majors with low enrollments and then lays off all those faculty - tenured or not.  Sometimes universities try to have tenured faculty absorbed by another dept/program, but it is not always possible.  Due to COVID-19 and the financial strain that some schools are under, my guess is we might see that happen to a small number of colleges/universities -or- the entire school will close and then everyone will get laid off.

Just recently, St Cloud State has laid off 8 tenured faculty members at the start of Fall 2019 because of financial issues (https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2019/09/19/tenured-faculty-laid-st-cloud-state).  I am pretty sure that the faculty members who were laid off are trying to fight it or hope it doesn't come to this, but the decision was decided before the COVID-19 situation so an 11th hour save might not be possible.

I do agree that contingent faculty will be harder hit by the COVID-19 situation in general though.   This is going to be a really difficult year ahead for university hiring and budgets.

They might be trying to buy some time to figure out what Fall enrollments look like and how long the COVID-19 situation will last.  It is definitely a bummer though and I hope you find something soon.

Thank you for posting this news. As horrible and sad as it is to lay off tenure track faculty, I hate to say that I am not too surprised, as it was in the humanities at a not-so-popular school.  The humanities have been quite a precarious academic field...humanities phds tend to have the worst tenure-track employment rates in academia, and now seeing this article makes me think that the precarity seems to continue even after achieving tenure-track and/or tenure in the humanities.

St. Cloud State does not seem to be one of the distinct universities, with respect to research, and I imagine tenured and tenure track positions, even in the humanities, would be "safe" at R1 and/or R2 schools, although frozen endowments have warranted hiring freezes for new tenure track jobs at some of those schools.

I am surprised to see that positions continue to being posted in the field of social sciences at decent schools, so I might stay in a positive mind-set, although it may not be warranted...things might go south.

I have one in review right now, should have the result of the review process by May 15. It isn't from my PhD, it's from my master's thesis though

    That is excellent!

I want to follow up to state that I have just submitted the first round of major revisions for a research paper (which was first submitted to a peer reviewed journal back in July 2019).

If they accept all of my revisions, this will be my second research paper for 2020.

    I have prior peer-reviewed publications in 2019, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013...

I just started drafting a third research paper....I am hoping I can submit it to a journal by the end of April (the deadline for a special issue)...wish me luck!!

I am aiming for three. There are different components to my doctoral thesis project, that I could easily split into three different articles.

That is exactly the number I am hoping for since my graduation back in 2019. I have one down, published in January 2020. Now I have two more to go. Let us know if you have submitted articles

  15. Hello,

I wanted to provide another update for the people who may be following this question (or perhaps no one is). The virtual interview went ahead. It was with a panel of four professors from four different specialties all working together in the same department. They asked me a number of questions, each taking turns...the questions did not seem too difficult...I sent them a thank-you email afterwards as a follow up...and they responded back immediately...let's hope it works out and I get onto the short-list...

    @Faith786

Congrats on your interviews and thanks for sharing your news! It's a good sign to see that positions are being postponed and not cancelled altogether.

Out of curiosity, are you in the sciences? I'm pretty sure most humanities searches are in the low season now, so I was just wondering what fields hire around this time of the year.

I was taking a look at the list of hiring freezes The Professor Is In posted. It is indeed confusing. Although she does claim that the listings are unverified, it's really hard to tell what exactly these freezes mean and how long they will last. Then I realized that list really isn't helpful for anything except stoking anxiety.....

    Hello,

    Thank you for your comments.

    You ask a great question.

Yes, I am in the sciences.

    Are you in the humanities?

If it was not for Covid19, I really think I would have had a job offer by now...

But maybe I will still get an offer soon, who knows? Let's think positively !!!

Not knowing what will happen also elicits a lot of anxiety, I guess?!!

@ZeChocMoose Thank you for sharing the link. I have been comparing some of the hiring freeze claims of the schools listed on the blog post to the actual schools' human resources websites, and not all the schools are implementing hiring freezes.  For example, Pittsburgh was listed, but their website states that there is no hiring freeze (at least when I checked).

I also want to share the news that I applied for a tenure track position in California the week before last week but I received an email on Monday that they have postponed the start date from September 2020 to September 2021. They did not cancel the position.

I also want to share the good news that the day before yesterday, I received an email from a university in Michigan and they have invited me to an interview for a tenure track position. Unfortunately it is not a face-to-face interview due to Covid19. Instead, they are conducting it virtually. They asked for my telephone number and id for the virtual meeting.

So, basically, by sharing this fresh news, I want to reiterate that there is some hope!!

Stay positive, folks...don't give up. Keep applying. I noticed tenure track positions were posted up until March 26, and hopefully they will continue to do so!!

Hello everyone, I have more news...I just received an email for a tenure track position from South Carolina stating that the "Due to the COVID-19 crisis, we had to close our search [...] You were a very strong applicant and we would like to encourage you to apply again when we re-post this position, we hope as early as this fall.  Thank you for taking the time to apply. Stay well."

Hmm...not sure what to think of it. It's like good and bad news in one shot.

Publication is very important in clinical psychology. I aim to finish with no less than 20 peer-reviewed journal articles of which no less than 10 should be first authors.

I hope to have closer to ~30/~15.  I also expect to have 1-5 other CV line items per year (posters, talks, book chapters, etc.).

These are reasonable/typical numbers for the lab I'm joining. Excited and intimidated.

I'm at 1/1 now post-bach, so we're off to the races.

Thanks for the post...Let us know in updates when you get published. It is nice to hear positive news in these dark times...

  19. I just want to provide a few updates.

    1. I applied for a tenure track job last week in California. I received an email on Monday stating that the tenure track position was NOT cancelled, but rather the start date was postponed to next year, September 2021 instead of the original start date of September 2020.  They are keeping my application on file.

    2. The day before yesterday I received an email for an invitation for an interview for a tenure track job in Michigan. The interview will take place virtually.

I think that both of these developments are positive i.e. there are no cancellations....

    Stay positive folks!!

Wow, thanks for posting. We are indeed watching history in the making!!

And yes, as the article points out, "As fixed-term and part-time teaching faculty numbers increase, the traditional paradigm of “all research faculty also teach” could change as they could spend more time doing research on an efficient basis."

I wonder what it would mean for tenure track faculty versus teaching track faculty versus adjunct sessional lecturers....how would they split the teaching load amongst these three categories?

The teaching track faculty seemed to carry more of the teaching burden than tenure track faculty, but then what does that mean for adjunct sessional lecturers???
