I wasn't very impressed with the program's response to my emails. The grad coordinator was impossible to reach, and no one even told me they have no funding for international students until a few days before the application was due. Admittedly, it was partly my fault for not reading the international student page, but what can I say, as an American I just didn't really think of myself as an international student going to Canada ? I hope you get an answer one way or another soon! I assume you've logged into the portal and it doesn't show a response there?

University of Toronto - Criminology PhD? I got my rejection from them early Feb. I'm an American though, and they essentially have no funding for international students so its possible they just reject us pretty quickly.

I haven't talked to anyone else accepted to American. Will you be at the visit day next week? I think at this exact moment I am leaning towards American. As much as I would love to live in Vancouver and stay up there forever, I've always thought the American program was a better fit for me. Visiting DC may make this an easy choice, one way or another. Though I will probably wait until the last minute to make my decision.

Thanks for the info! I have no idea if I really stand a chance as I'm not coming from sociology (I'm a criminology person). I have three other offers I am currently deciding between and a funded McGill offer would likely win over the others, but the deadline is rapidly approaching for a decision from my other schools!

I am deciding between American (full funding) and Simon Fraser (tiny funding). My spouse and I have wanted to emigrate to Canada for years, but Simon Fraser does not fund well so it really falls on him to make enough money for us to live on, in one of the most expensive cities in North America (Vancouver BC). I think American is a stronger fit, and the funding is great. I'm not sure I want to live in DC but its more affordable than Vancouver. So I'm basically struggling with the location and money part. And the fact that our long term goal is to live in Canada, so a Canadian PhD makes a lot more sense. And I love Vancouver. I'm headed to DC next week for the American admitted students day, and I'm a little apprehensive. I want to fall in love with it and the DC area, but I'm also afraid I will fall in love with it and then not go to Canada. This is causing what feels like some kind of existential crisis and I'm so close to letting my friends decide via FB poll ? I'm also waiting to hear from McGill, also in Canada, though I suspect I am waitlisted and I'm assuming not going to get in at this point. McGill would likely win because Montreal is super affordable and its an excellent school and the person I would be working with studies exactly what I want to study, although its a Sociology program so I suspect that's why I've been waitlisted. In any event...existential crisis. Which of your schools are you thinking of? What is the driving factor in your decision?

Anyone hear anything yet? This is the last school I have to hear from and I'm getting anxious about making my choice without knowing one way or another about McGill...

Has anyone attempted to negotiate their offer? How did that go?

Just waiting on McGill Sociology...hopefully will hear in the next week or two. I will have to email them and ask for an update if I don't hear soon as Canadian schools don't follow the whole April 15th deadline.

I too am a mom to two little children. I've got a few acceptances to schools, one would move me across the country but also pay me fairly well. I love the program, I want to attend. But I am also feeling sadness and anxiety over my decisions. Where I am now, in a MS program, is in my hometown, with two sets of supportive grandparents that are a huge help. Moving away from this support network, having to hope my husband gets a good enough job to cover childcare, is incredibly stressful. My other school option is in Canada, and much closer to home. But it comes with its own challenges - visas, work permits, travel restrictions...its just very stressful. Even when schools do provide subsidized childcare, the waitlists can mean you have to find some other place, and those other places have waitlists too. None of this is easy. Your analysis of the disenfranchisement of parent students is spot on. So here's some support, from one mom to another. This shit is tough.

Same! Its going to be a hard choice for me, moving to Canada is super appealing, but the money part is stressful.

I saw an email earlier today that the official letters are going out within a week or so, hopefully we can both rest easy once those come in. I think I am going to head up there around mid March as well. Here's hoping we both get some funding! $17,000 is better than nothing for sure - is your friend Canadian? I do think they get more funding than international students.

I’m in the same boat, not sure what is takening so long? I emailed the graduate secretary last Monday but haven’t heard back from her. They also don’t do a spring visit day? I’m going to go up in a few weeks anyway to see the campus. Are you a Canadian student or American? I’m American so extra concerned about funding as I know it’s limited for non-citizens/perm residents.

Rejected from University of Toronto. Still waiting on Berkeley (Jurisprudence and Social Policy), American (Justice, Law, & Criminology), and McGill (Sociology). At the moment it looks like I will be headed to Simon Fraser and just hoping for some pittance of funding.
