Has anyone applied to the Berkeley JSP program? Results usually come out around now but no one has posted acceptances or rejections...app deadline was December 17, 2018...would think they would have made a decision by now.

Hey, that’s my research interest too! I found it hard to find good supervisors that are critical criminologists and race scholars. So I also applied to sociology programs because the criminologists in those programs tend to be more critical, and there are also usually race scholars in soc departments. So far, one sociology acceptance and one criminology acceptance. But the top programs really didn’t have the right people for me.

Anyone else apply to this program? Looks like in past years usually some have announced acceptances by now in the results, but so far no one has this year. I know my application is a long shot so I’m not expecting an acceptance but it’s also a really good fit for me so who knows. Anyone else waiting and worrying about this one?

I saw someone posted a waitlist result. Any idea if they have already sent out acceptances? Past years, and the website, show the first round goes out mid March?

Thank you! Here's hoping a lack of international (American student) competition helps me. I've already been accepted to a Crim program at Simon Fraser in Vancouver, but Montreal is so appealing. Plus funding will be better at McGill. I'm also excited to work with one of the professors at McGill who does research I'm interested in. Good luck with your applications too!

Same! Maybe we both end up in Canada!

Did anyone apply to this program? I haven't seen it mentioned much in the past and am curious why that is. Its a top school in Canada, are people just not interested in moving to Montreal or is there some problem with the school?

My husband and I are looking into applying for express entry, I believe all provinces have it except Quebec, which usually means within 6-12 months you get permanent residency. What I am not sure about is if you can hold a student visa at the same time. Otherwise, I think it takes more than a year to get residency if you are there on a student visa - you should be able to qualify by the time you hit year four. Again, not positive about this stuff. But I am hoping that I can go the express entry route, since ideally we want citizenship as soon as possible.

Good luck! I thought about applying there, its a good program! University of Toronto is a good program too but they rarely can fund international students - wish I had known prior to applying! I also applied to McGill sociology, as there is a professor there that does criminology and focuses on police-citizen encounters, which is a research area of interest to me and is a really good fit. I think I have at least a few more weeks before I hear back from them. Waiting is the worst. You will feel better though once you get your first acceptance!

If this round doesn't work out for you, I suggest you check out Canadian schools. I applied and was accepted at Simon Fraser (in Vancouver, BC) for a Criminology PhD, they don't ask for GRE scores. Funding for international students can be tricky, but on the plus side, tuition per year for international grad students is only about $6000/year, so its possible to make it up with scholarships/TA/Research positions. And, you can start banking time towards permanent residency if you want to get Canadian citizenship - that's why I first looked at Canadian schools. Might be an option - though I don't think all schools put so much emphasis on the GRE. I hope they don't, my quant is 48%, though verbal is 80-something % and 92% for writing, so I don't know how they would rank me.
-
Did they tell you it was your GRE? Everyone I have talked to in admissions has said GRE scores are the least important thing they look at, so are even considering dumping them as a requirement. If they are 50th % or better, it shouldn't hurt except in the most competitive programs. Good luck on the rest of the apps, hope you get in somewhere!

Anyone claiming the second Simon Fraser Criminology PhD acceptance? I am one of them, just curious who the other person is. I'm dying to know more about funding, especially as an American and have been told a "letter is coming" with those details. Also, do Canadian schools not do vists? Or is it just SFU, anyone know? I still have more decisions I am waiting on, but excited at the prospect of an international move!
-
Applying to programs in Criminology and Sociology around Canada. Got my first acceptance to the Crim PhD at Simon Fraser today! Now...to figure out funding. SFU doesn't usually offer funding but there are a lot of scholarships to apply for. Unfortunately most are limited to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. So, hoping for a teaching position or research position to pay for it.

Tell your classmate one of my professors, an alumni of Simon Fraser, just flagged me down and said she called and asked them what was up, and they are just behind, anticipating letters go out this week. Good luck to your classmate! This waiting stuff is so stressful!

Did anyone apply to Simon Fraser in BC Canada? We were told a week ago that decisions would be announced at the end of last week...and then nothing. I'm sure they just ended up taking longer than expected but its making me crazy!

Is anyone attending ASC in Atlanta this year? I'm doing a poster presentation of my in-progress thesis, and hoping to meet professors at the programs I'm looking at. I thought perhaps other prospective PhD applicants might also be there.
