  1. I got into Missouri State University's Master's program in Religious Studies. How is it in terms of reputation? I guess this is my only option, but I would like to know where it stands and whether it would be helpful for me to pursue doctorate degree in the future.

  2. I wonder how long I may have to wait until I get notified of Virginia's MA program. I am also waiting for post-bacc program in Classics for UPenn, but getting into MA program will be fascinating. Should I give about a month until I hear back from UVA?

  3. What the &@$!. I received an answer by someone from UVA requesting my correct version of the writing sample, so I sent it to the person and called him by his first name. It turned out that he is a professor at the University. Because I sent it to the alleged email address for Jennifer, I did not obviously read his signature at the end of email cuz I was too desperate on this matter, but now I see it, and I feel &*&#ed. Should I laugh at myself for doing that, or curse myself for possibly ruining my chance, or just brush it off because he ain't my prof yet? Anyway, it was a hilarious and frightening moment at the same time.

You can try reaching out to Jenni Via and see if they're willing to swap out the sample. They may refer you to someone else or dismiss you and say not to worry about it ?‍♂️

Looks like its Spring Break over there. Hopefully I may contact her Monday and see if it works out. I sent her email, but because it is something urgent(at least in my perspective), I may just call her to discuss the matter. Thanks for the help!

I just found out that I was accepted to Georgetown's Theological and Religious Studies program! This is my third attempt at Georgetown and my seventh (yes, you read that correctly) application cycle. Never give up!

Congratulations! Could you give me some advice on what you did between each cycle to 'up' your chances? I feel like I actually need to prepare for my second cycle, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

  6. Anyone know if this email means that I should just count myself out? I sent an email saying that I was accepted to somewhere else and they are expecting to hear back from me by March 8th, and this is the reply:

    Dear XXXXX,

Our Graduate Admissions Committee is in the final stages, but we do not have information to share at this time. As you may or may not know, all graduate programs in the U.S. abide by an agreement that no program can offer you funding contingent upon you taking it before the universal April 15 deadline.  Perhaps the school you have heard from is not a U.S. institution?  In any event, we do hope to have news soon.

This is from UC Santa Barbara, who did send out 1st Round Acceptance according to Oh No.

Care to share any insight you may have gathered on their process? Is their cycle essentially over?

I'm not too anxious anymore, as I've received an admission at a program that is a better fit for my interests, but I am curious.

I am not oh no, but I am currently communicating with a prof at UC Davis because I personally know him from my undergrad(I took many courses taught by him) and it seems that UCSB is under a certain crisis at the moment according to him. He did not specify what the crisis is, but I assume that is what is delaying their second round offers. I am not too anxious because I am ready to move onto my second cycle and going through some preps, but I will let you know once I receive answer from the prof as I will ask him what is going on with UCSB.

  8. I have given up on everything on this cycle because I have not heard back from all other four schools I am waiting. I am now moving on to my backup plans, like applying for post-bacc programs to improve my language skills for my intended areas and also finding source of finance. It is almost a liberating sensation, and I do not know how I was unable to achieve this. Maybe getting three rejections in a row helped?

  9. I feel for all of you. To be honest I have given up on everything on this cycle because I have not heard back from all other four schools I am waiting. Yeah, I'm not sure if it's a go/no go for BU. I was contacted for an interview last week and was notified Friday unofficially. My POI told me that I should be getting an official letter in the mail from the Dean late this week. I'm still in shock I got in. Apparently, one of the professors at BU contacted one of my references directly (a prof. at Pitt) sometime last week.

This is my first time applying and I applied to UChicago, Pitt, Northwestern, GWU, Harvard, NYU, Notre Dame, Boston, and Duke. ND informed me right away that they had no interest in me lol. But I haven't heard anything from anybody else except for BU, which is fine since BU seems to fit me like a glove.

Congratulations on your acceptance! So it seems like interview is a necessary process to be accepted. Thanks for the info

I got a personal acceptance email, which said that I will be getting a formal acceptance letter in about two weeks. My "feeling" from reading that email is that the department may send out more acceptances, so I think there may be still some more chances

Thank you for the answer. I hope I really do get in, as it is one of my top choices. Now time to wait in agony for the next two weeks.

    Hello all,

I have been lurking this forum for a while, but now my patience reached its limit and I am dying to know what is happening with Princeton. Does anyone know? I saw that one applicant had an interview early January, but I also know what Princeton is on a rolling-basis. I haven't received any interview invitation or anything from them yet. Should I just consider myself out?

I got an acceptance email from UCSB in case anyone is wondering what is happening with UCSB. They said that they accepted me out of their first-round review, so I guess they could be releasing more acceptances later.

Currently, I have Indiana & UCSB acceptance, and I am waiting for Princeton (I didn't apply anywhere else). If I know a bit more about what is going on in Princeton, then I could move onto the decision process of where I should accept.

I applied for Buddhist studies with a MA in Buddhist studies. My grades are really average and plain.

Congrats on acceptances! Did they send personal email to you saying that you were accepted? I am now in deeper sadness

I forget if you've already mentioned--did you apply to any M* programs this cycle?

I applied for only PhD programs since I am already doing MA in my home country. For next cycle, I am considering redoing M* programs as well.

  14. I sent the grim news of getting rejected to three schools to my adviser at my alma mater, and she told me that she thinks because of how few jobs there are in academia these days, perhaps graduate programs are limiting, even more, the number of students they admit. Maybe this is the case, and so the competition is more fierce. I now to accept the fact that I may need to go through another cycle and that I need more preparation.
