You can do them online at a website called master clinician! https://www.masterclinician.org/

I'd email a professor at your current online school to make sure they'll sign off on your hours. I have heard horror stories where people will use Master Clinician and their professors were unaware and therefore did not sign off. Master Clinician is an excellent site and I have about 15 hours logged right now. (If you want to observe the literal cutest kiddo ever, watch the sessions with client "WL")

Do you happen to know if they would have the decisions on who gets the spots before the April 15th deadline? It would impact my decision for sure haha I hope we would hear back soon but that wouldn’t give them much time to review the apps

Honestly... I don't know if they would. It would make a lot of sense for them to do so, but the deadline is April 8th... We all know these programs take a little time to get back to us, unfortunately. They should let us know though, since like you said, it affects decisions and It would certainly affect mine.

The website said that their open house will have more information about assistantships. Did you attend any of the open house sessions yet? I'm planning to go and hoping to get more information but I'd really like to know about it before visiting! I wonder if we would find out before the April 15th deadline since it would influence my decision!

I assume you just received the email. I should've updated this post and say that UWM told me they'd get back to us with funding applications this week. Dr. Lund was waiting on information for one program and didn't want to prematurely send out apps!

  4. I'll have a little more debt than you at the end of graduate school because my Estimated Family Contribution on FAFSA was just high enough that I didn't get aid (I should probably be grateful that my family earns enough, but they still weren't able to afford any of my college. Regardless, I will look into consolidating my loans for a much lower interest rate and use an option to have increments taken out of my paycheck every month. This way I don't really ever see the debt looming over me and I can pay into the debt if I ever have extra cash!

Debt is completely scary and it's completely valid to feel overwhelmed by it -- I know I am. As somebody else mentioned, I believe school SLP's may be eligible for a loan forgiveness option through the government, so maybe look into that. I'm here to PM if you want to talk more about it!

My professors tell us to apply to how many based upon our GPA. Here is the chart that I have been given when trying to decide how many to apply to.

    10-12 schools for 3.1-3.4 GPA

    6-9 schools for 3.5-3.75 GPA

    4-6 schools for 3.7-3.8 GPA

3-4 schools for 3.9 and up

My GPA is a 3.70 cumulative so I applied to 8 schools. So far, I have gotten into 4 schools. I have been placed on the waitlist for two of them. And, still waiting to hear back from the other two. In my opinion, do your research and apply to ones that fit in your criteria. I spent around $900 to apply to my 8 schools.

$900 for eight schools?! Were they on CSDCAS? That seems like a lot...

Damn. That is very real. I’ll have to attend the open house to see if it’s really worth the price. Northwestern is my top choice as well. I feel like whether it’s worth it or not depends on what you want to do after graduating. If you plan to pursue a PhD and want to do research or work in academia in the future than a degree from NU does actually mean something. If being a school slp is your career goal than attending NU might not be the best idea. Just my opinion

While I agree Ph.D.'s programs do care more about what research/experience you've had and the name of your graduate school, I still think it's tough to justify their price tag. Again, we will have to see what NU offers after they send official funding information, but there are plenty of bigger-name state schools (and even cheaper private schools for that matter) that provide equally-excellent opportunities for research.

  7. I think they just really liked what I offered as a candidate in the interview, honestly. I felt super strong about it. I'd say go for it and ask because what's the worst they can do -- say no? It's definitely a benefit though. I'd be paying around $23,000 before living expenses so it's a fair price, but I wish they did reciprocity with my state. PM me if you have any other questions because it's between UND and one other school who may offer a GA position for me.

  8. This. They say they can estimate that most people have received 20-30% scholarships in the past, but that is still very expensive. (Also, the viral video of that person with the $225k debt was an SLP student who attended Northwestern for grad school -- which is scary). They do have amazing connections though, but I couldn't justify paying that much for a University's name... Let's hope they're generous with scholarships.

  9. My best advice would be to apply to schools that accept lower GPA's or that get fewer applications. Plenty of the schools in my signature get fewer applicants per cycle. I have a 3.47 CSDCAS GPA but I supplemented by lower GPA with research positions, volunteering related to CS&D, and getting involved with NSSLHA at my school. Lastly, I'd say schools that interview allow them to evaluate your application beyond your GPA/GRE's -- you're able to verbally explain your experiences and incorporate your positive qualities into the questions they ask. Best of luck!!

Thanks, @Procaffeination! I'm dreading giving the "tell me about yourself" pitch which I'm assuming I'll have to give-- is that one of the questions they ended up giving you?

Thanks for the heads up-- sounds like it'll be a lot of thinking on our feet! I have mine tomorrow.

Though I can't say what they specifically asked, I am sure if you know why you love Speech Pathology or what positive attributes you can bring, you'll be more than fine! (And you'll see tomorrow after you finish!)

  11. Just completed the interview. If anybody in the future is looking through these threads, it was super harmless! I would say Emerson's doesn't really have questions you can prepare for. I was asked two questions in which no mock interview I've practiced included. Honestly, I'd imagine they'll change the questions so I'd recommend knowing why you want to be an SLP and some positive characteristics which will make you successful as a student and clinician!

Hi all! Is anyone bringing anything to their interviews this week? Resume/CV, Statement of Purpose, anything? I assume they are doing the interviews back-to-back, so I would think they wouldn't have just read our SOPs? Should I go into the interview thinking they know nothing about me before I walk into the room?

I'm doing an online interview, so I can't really help -- sorry! I would say that if you think a resume/CV or some writing sample you are proud of may make you stand out you could bring it. I only hesitate about SoP and Resume because they technically already have them.

One of the programs I was accepted to requires a neuro of communication prereq course, which I don't have. They offer an online summer course to fulfill the prereq, but I'm interested in seeing if any other universities offer a more condensed version of the course. Has anyone taken neurology of communication online?

I don't know if it would transfer, but my undergrad (UW-Madison) offers a CS&D 210 which I believe would qualify as "neuro". You could give it a look here!
