I'll be in Boston, not at HDS . Good luck!
-
Wow, I'm surprised they took them without any Hebrew!
-
Anthro, Speak with BU about how flexible the requirements are. For reference, here at BC I have done a ton of language work. They more or less bent the rules/revised them when I came into the program (our department more or less began in 2008). I only came in with 2 years of (attic) Greek and now after graduation I will have 3-4 Greek, 2 Hebrew, .5 Aramaic, 1 Latin, plus two or three seminar/advanced language courses, as well as a German reading prof. course. The great thing about the BTI is you can pretty much find any language course you need .
-
Yes, it's fairly normal. Sadly most programs (mainstream) do not require any language work for either the MDiv or an MTS/MAR. I think HDS might require it, though?
-
Makes sense. I actually know a couple people here in Boston from Wheaton. They all seem very intelligent! What are your interests? Also, I'm still holding out hope for Duke! I need a friend this fall in NC!

technology question for those studying in religion
sacklunch replied to anthrovagabond's topic in Religion
11Q13, I'm wondering how you like Logos? I have only used it briefly and really didn't get a good sense for it. I have been using Bibleworks for around 3-4 years now and have been really pleased with it. Thoughts? -
No, it's not too soon. Speak with the prof you would like to work with and ask for advice about coursework, ect. Focusing your graduate coursework to a particular professor(s), I think, would give you an edge (If that is indeed what you really want to study, of course).

I'm not an expert, but from what I know the newest OS that will run on the Dell is 10.6.2. Also, I don't believe you can update the OS (so updating from 10.6.2 to 10.6.8 will screw up the OS....I know, because I have done it and hard to start over..haha). And yeah, I believe it will run rather well. I have tested two different ones for several hours and they seemed to be fine. As I said, the process is pretty easy. PM me if you have any specific questions, although a "hackintosh" forum might be better for you! best -

I think netbooks in general have hovered around the same price. I think this is due, in part, because the world's economy stinks, thus costs for parts are up, ect. Also, if anyone is moderately tech-savvy you can convert a Dell Mini to run Mac OSX. I have done it several times for the biology department here at BC and doesn't take more than a coupe hours (no hardware modding, just a couple steps with thumb drives). Anyways, it's a cool option for those that love OSX but can't afford that oh so sweet macbook! cheers -

Sarah, 1. You can find something for around 200-300 if you know where to look. Recently I found a good deal on a Samsung netbook for a xmas present off overstock.com. I think i paid around $225 for it, then spent another 20 bucks on upgrading the ram (did myself). That or you could always use craigslist to buy something second hand. Although that option is a bit more iffy. 2. Not that I know. BibleWorks is amazing at certain things, namely lexicons, parsing, ect., but falls rather short on others. The fact that it doesn't include any critical edition Vulgate always struck me as odd. Now that you mention it, I have NO CLUE what you would use for studying the Qur'an. Anyone know? -
I do hope to get lots of research while there .

I should also mention I officially accepted Duke's offer. I still haven't heard back from ND concerning the ECS program, but quite honestly Duke is a way better fit. I was just having a hard time convincing myself of that because I will be taking on more debt from Duke...oh well. Hope to see some of you in Durham this fall. Oh, and if anyone wants a roommate, please feel free to contact me! I don't want to live alone. It's just too sad.
-
cbf, Everyone accepted receives a 50% tuition scholarship. I think they take around ten or so a year for the degree, from all areas of study (Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, ect.).
-
Any idea when you will hear from Duke?

I have been using BibleWorks for three or four years and it truly is an amazing tool. But, as mentioned above, using it too early when learning the languages can be harmful to actually retaining the words/forms. And yes, Diablo 3 deserves a new machine. I have been on beta for awhile now and am pretty stoked to say the least... -
What about your student loans from undergrad...??
sacklunch replied to objectivityofcontradiction's topic in The Lobby
My advice is DO NOT take out private loans. Also being in the humanities, as well as attending expensive private schools, I'm banking on the Income Based Repayment plan the gov has, which is not applicable to private loans. I owe a ton, but at least ill be able to have my payment capped. I imagine if you do actually owe quite a bit, and you're going into philosophy (a poor paying field), you may need to rely on this at some point. -

I'm not sure if you will be able to find one that cheap. Although the new iPads just came out, so I imagine the old ones will be a lot cheaper now. -

If you don't mind spending 1k+ then the Macbook Air is what I was going to recommend. Most of the faculty I deal with use Mac (although a lot of their lab equipment is PC only). But I have been an avid PC user all my life, mostly because specific software I use. Also, as another user suggests, software such as BIbleWorks, Logos, ect., will only be useful with a laptop, not a tablet. But honestly, MANY theology students will never need such a tool. Most programs (M*) do not require specific training in Greek or Hebrew, thus such a tool might be a bit overkill, especially considering the cost (although there are "ways" of getting the software for free). If you are looking to spend less than 300-400 a 10-12" netbook is always an option. I have used several models and been happy with their speed (usually a small ram upgrade required). For around 500-600 you can buy a really nice PC that will last you years. As for the Mac, the only model I see that is really worth is (for a student) is the air, because of how small/light it is. I REALLY would love a 11" Macbook air..and perhaps one day I'll buy one. For now, I'm using an upgraded Alienware M11x....but I do my fair share of gaming . -

First off, do not get a tablet. You simply cannot use it in many of the same ways. Writing papers on a tablet sucks (even with an external keyboard) and for how much they cost you could get a decent laptop/netbook. What size laptop do you prefer? How much can you spend? I'm a graduate assistant for the biology/physics profs here at BC, so I work a lot with professors picking computers, software problems, et cetera. -
I'm almost certainly going to attend Duke's MA. That said, I'm curious if any of you need future roommates? If so, maybe shoot me an email? wagnern@bc.edu.
