At what point do you break down and call/email them?
sacklunch replied to Phenomenologist's topic in Religion
Perhaps that differs from the Div school and arts/sciences dept? Also, this is for masters, not PhD. -
I commute to HDS every T/Th for class. I live right near BC, which is maybe 4 miles away from HDS? On the bus it takes about 30 minutes, give or take. If I end up transferring to HDS next year I'm going to stay in Brighton. It's fairly affordable, clean, and really safe...while Cambridge is pretty nasty (imo) and way too expensive! You might be able to find cheaper housing near BU. good luck.

Windows 7 on all three of my machines. I like Mac products (they are built well, ect), but I don't think spending 1k+ for a laptop/desktop is a good deal. I have also done several hackintosh setups myself, all ending rather quickly (got bored of OSX). If you like to build, play, tinker, ect, with systems (like m), I think Windows (or Linux) is the way to go.

How much variation is there in graduate-level classes?
sacklunch replied to TransnationalHistory's topic in History
They vary just like anything else. Many of mine have had a lot of readings throughout the course, with a lot of discussion between students (rather than just all lecture), usually with either a long research paper at the end, or several shorter (7-8 page) papers throughout the semester. So it sounds similar to what you're doing now, only they will be a lot of reading throughout the entire semester. cheers -

I'm sure they just haven't sent you any information yet. Judging from your stats, I doubt you wouldn't receive a substantial, if not all, tuition comped. good luck. -
No doubt...JUST TELL US ALREADY . I think after this Friday this section will calm down a bit.

What about PhD funding for Americans? Since "most" of the US PhD programs are funded, are the Canadian ones the same?
-
Makes sense. I remember looking into TST for an MA and not applying because I was told its funding for Americans sucks (although tuition is way cheaper). It also seems like not very many Canadian PhD's come into the US to teach once they're are done...are at least I haven't seen/had many? I have had a couple from Toronto (although in history), but I don't think any of them went to the others for PhD work...again, strange.
-
That's a great question! I have heard from quite a few folks that Toronto is awesome, but honestly I don't think I have ever heard anyone mention the others you listed. I have heard of them on this forum (obviously), but I don't think they have ever come up from the several dozen friends I have that did/have applied for doctoral/masters programs. I always wondered why this was? Is it because funding for Americans sucks, or???

Their break is next week....I know this because their schedule conflicts with BC's...hence not being able to leave Boston for BC's break...bah

Congrats!

Previous - pseudo-conservative Protestant. Now - agnostic. cheers
-
Haha indeed...or perhaps they will release the results early the Friday before? Good luck.

Sara: I am doing something similar. I'm a current MTS student at BC, applying for transfer to YDS' Second Temple concentrate. I have the same complaints about BC - they are great in some areas, but not wholly for what I want to do, thus the transfer application. Good luck, hopefully we will see each other this fall, or perhaps at a BTI course if we don't get in, eh?
-
So what? A lot of div schools are not conservative. They may be more than a lot of others, but I don't see how you could really say any of this without actually having gone there? I'm just tired of hearing about how HDS is "insanely liberal" from folks who don't/didn't go there. You seem to think one cannot get a sound theological education from HDS. I guess it's always fun to pick on the big guy. Meh.
-
Honestly my experience with HDS hasn't been "lefty" at all. I have several friends over there, and have/am taking classes there through the BTI. Sure, they offer courses that are "lefty" but they also offer courses just like any other div school. The dozen students I know from HDS seem pretty normal theological, not any different from my friends at BC. Meh. I guess I'm just used to plenty of atheists/agnostics studying this at the grad level? For most classes, unless specifically labeled as such (pastoral), I could care less about someone's faith, ect. I am an agnostic, if it matters. shalom

Congrats! I'll be happy to meet you this fall .

It's just like anything else? Some people are naturally lonely, boring, anti-social, ect; some people are social and make friends easily. Don't over analyse it.
-
Last year YDS sent out an email and released the decisions the Friday before online. I'm sure there is a good chance they will do the same this year....hopefully?
-
YDS says on their website the 15th, but last year they released them a couple days earlier online, I remember.
-
From what I heard no news is good news. I heard from a friend, who also applied, they are down to the "last 10" or so. Good luck.
-
I know several people who applied for it (masters BC folk). I think they take 1 or 2 people a year for it.

Is that program taught in English?
