Anyone heard from UNC? Just saw someone posting on the results page that all invites have been sent out. :(

seems clinical invites should've been sent out by jan 15th, but for social it'll be in next few weeks? this poster wrote ->

"I reached out to the admissions department regarding a timeline for social’s interview invites. They told me that interviews should start rolling out over the next couple weeks, although they did not have an exact deadline."

Hi everyone! Has anyone heard from UVA? I didn’t hear anything yet and feels like all the invitations have sent out and I’m rejected. It’s my top choice and I saw on the result page that someone reached out to their POI and got their result that way. I wonder if it’s a good idea or not.

didnt apply because from conversations last summer, AW might be the only one from UVA social whos gonna recruit. could be wrong, but wanna let ppl know

I would advise giving faculty another week or 2.

I know it doesn't seem like it, but it is still very early on in the application cycle. In many cases, faculty don't even get access to the applications until end of December or beginning of January due to application processing times and extensions for letters of recommendations. Some programs process a bit earlier than this but not by much. The faculty then have to review many applications (more than 150 for social and more than 80 for personality at my university this cycle). With GREs being dropped or not required by many universities, easy cuts of the pool by those criteria are eliminated, requiring more thorough examinations of all applications (which is a good thing IMO but does take substantially more time). Faculty are also dealing with huge budget cuts that impact graduate student lines and many faculty members are fighting to find funding for new graduate students so they can admit more people (but it takes time to fidget with budgets, inquire for bridge funds, etc. to do that). This is all on top of the letters of recommendations most faculty have already committed to write at this time of year for their current graduate students' fellowship applications, colleague's jobs and tenure applications, etc., plus preparing for courses to begin in the next week or so, continuing to conduct their own research/write papers, and completing service requirements to journals and their department. I don't think emailing a faculty member will hurt your chances of being admitted per se (because most programs have more tangible and streamlined standards than if candidates email them) but it could just exacerbate faculty members already stretched thin schedules and stress.

If you really feel like you need to follow-up, try emailing a program officer instead of a faculty member. Program officers can give you a specific answer and you don't risk adding more stress to already busy faculty members.

Just want to give a s/o to @Regression2theMean, who went out their way to provide advice/support during these trying times. The waiting game is definitely difficult, and I felt a genuinely sense of alleviation after reading this and taking the perspective of faculties. Wish others can gain a sense of equanimity and get good news in the end :)

I'm a faculty at an R1, doing admissions work now. What you've heard is probably true--funding is terrible at universities now, and particularly at state institutions. Grad student lines are among the most protected (after sports, of course) areas of the budget, but times are very hard.

Applications are up in some places, but they're not massively up everywhere. The real problem is that entering class sizes are shrinking. We're looking at a 50% reduction this year. But it's still not settled.

We've recently identified our "top 20" and as soon as the full faculty can look at the files, we'll send out invitations. Our history is use phones for the first contact, and an in-person invitation for the second, more dispositive interview. What would you, as admissions candidates, like to have? How would you simultaneously excel, learn about the program, and manage the stress?

agreed with @behaviorisweird on zoom/phone for the first rounds and in-person being crucial for housing/logistic steps... but seems everyone is doing a virtual "visiting" day for covid. Maybe a virtual tour? like the ones you do when you drop a pin in google map and get street view, but with more guidance/sharing from students?

Hi all. Has anyone heard from UNC? There is one post on the results page saying the interview invites from UNC have been sent out. Quite confused.

I applied but have not heard from them either. IIRC it was from dev or clinical program, so I hope it's just due to the different agenda of their programs rather than our applications being stalled :) fingers crossed

Hi everyone, I'm anxious too. I feel like I'm checking my email all the time and it feels obsessive. ?  How are ya'll doing/managing?

I got an informal interview already, which feels great, but it feels weird having only heard from 1 and not the rest...

Wishing everyone all the luck in the world!!!!! ❤️

(also shoutout to aurorma for starting this thread!!!)

Congrats! hang in there. I'm assuming things could get slow in the next two weeks given finals are just over and profs might take off for holidays (though it might also mean they got time to review our apps).

    Hi all,

Sending you all patience as we desperately check our phones and emails every two seconds!

Has anyone started hearing back from social psych programs? I see a couple of informal interviews for social psych programs but nothing else. Maybe a little extra desperate to post here as well, but can you blame me?!

    Thank you!

Heard from a colleague that Rutgers has been extending some pre-interview invites, hope some will arrive soon.

I'm totally with you...it almost feels like everyone is applying for clinical programs lol.

Agreed! Felt so weird that according to many admission stats I saw (i.e. UC Berkeley), clinical and social receive similar amount of application (~600 per year). But the clinical programs just got way more discussion than here.

Glad that you created this new thread for social / personality psychology Ph.D Program! Thanks for starting one!

I am also applying this year. Just started studying GRE and doing my research to fill out a lit of my goal programs and faculty with related research interest.

I am still trying to narrow down my research interest (omg there are just too many things that I am interested...). Hope I have more specific interest soon. I will post the list of programs later on!

My general questions for you guys is,

How did you all know you know that particular topic (research interest) is what you really want to pursue when there are tons of other interesting topics out there?

How much research experience/ skills do you have? Do you guys have enough research experience particularly related to your research interest?

Some great points above already! :) Adding my two cents - go through different school's psych dept, and see what all the profs are doing (check on some students' projects too, if you have time). Browsing through their research work often helps me a lot in clarifying my paths. Hope it helps!

  10. Hello!

Just saw the clinical/counseling thread and thought to start a forum for all applicants applying to social/personality psychologyPhD programs (app due in Fall 2020)! Working on my list of schools now, hopefully will post that by the end of May. I'm mostly interested in exploring subjective well-being and quality of life, with several approaches currently in mind -

    1. psychometrics - how to measure these traits accurately (including cross-lang, nation, culture) and efficiently
    2. self-regulation
    3. goal and meaning in life
    4. emotional regulation and stress-coping (a bit of mindfulness too!)
    5. cross-cultural effect

I look forward to getting to know y'all, while learning more about these fields themselves as well as deciding which one to pursue (or maybe I dont need to make that decision yet?).

Hope this is useful for y'all and good luck to everyone! :)
