Does anyone have examples of questions in interviews you've experienced or heard about that were unexpected? I am trying to prepare myself for as much as possible to prevent nervous rambling if an unforeseen question catches me off guard.

I know most are pretty straightforward (research experience, interests, etc.), but I would love to hear about any trickier questions to be prepared for.

For example, someone posted earlier in this thread about being asked to name specific publications with authors/dates/etc they had read recently (or something very similar to this).

My first time applying, so I frantically emailed grad students/profs that I knew for tips about the interviews. Uncommon questions include:

    • What skills do you want to develop? (ie motivational interviewing)
    • **Ensure you read the papers you cited in proposals, etc. B/c they do test for that
    • Do you have a support system/how tied down are you?

    Hope that helps :)

I have been asked the first one before. Though they phrased it more like specific things I wanted to learn about in grad school (i.e. statistical analyses and research methodologies). I've also been asked:

    • how I would manage my time as a grad student between classes, research, teaching responsibilities, and etc.
    • what my dream research project would be if there were no restrictions/constraints regarding resources (I've been asked this a few times)
    • and vice versa, a research project I could pursue that would be feasible for a first year graduate student (i.e. with limited resources)

Most of the other questions I've been asked were about my research experiences and interests, as well as why I was interested in their lab specifically.

Allow me to hijack this thread to talk about clothes. What's everyone wearing? Shoes? Bringing purses/bags to interviews?

I just spent a ridiculous amount of money on a blazer/pant combination + blouse... after searching through websites for hours. It's gray (couldn't find a black one I loved!), it's plain/boring, but I def. did not want to draw attention and wear one of my colorful blazers/pant combos.

btw- I'm also trying to get my money's worth and plan to wear this damn outfit for every. single. interview lol

Same! I would also like to know what people are wearing for dinners/events before the interview.

    Update after phone interview:

Congrats on the interview!!! I applied to both the experimental and clinical health programs there. If you don't mind, could you PM me the initials of the PI?

@davidfreire20 @PsychGal @buckeyepsych @ktwalsh I @'d people who commented on UNC in the past few pages... they are my (tentative) top choice so I bit the bullet and called Monday. Social division said to expect interview invites within a week if it's good news. Obviously not the same as clinical but I doubt the different sectors of UNC psych are on too very dramatically different time frames. I think I posted this already in the Social-specific psych PhD thread but thought I'd say so here, as well. Good luck to all, friends!

Thank you for calling! Hopefully I will get some good news this week.

I called UNC today and they said that some but not all PIs have submitted their list of invites -- so if you don't hear back within a week, you can be fairly confident you will not be getting an invite.

But has anyone actually heard back from UNC? The wait is killing me. I know it's only been two weeks, but still.

I have not heard anything back. But I'm trying to be hopeful and optimistic lol

Noticed that someone posted an interview invite from UNC Chapel Hill on the results board.  It just says "Psychology."  If you're that someone, would you mind sharing which concentration?  And if it's clinical, would you mind DM'ing me the POI name?  If not, I totally understand.  I'll just be breathing into a paper bag for a while.  Don't mind me... ?

Same I would love to know if it was clinical or not because UNC is one I applied to if you could post the initials if you're comfortable with that

    Same!

Type of invite: Email from current graduate student of PI inviting me to phone interview with them

    Interview date(s): Sometime this week

Can’t believe I have something to add here so early! Equal parts excited/terrified.

Congrats on the phone interview! Is this at Tuscaloosa or Birmingham?

Also, if you don't mind me asking, which POIs did you apply to work with there?
