    Dear Thread, please help!

Which of these schools, based on what you've seen/heard, has the best reputation for landing tenure track jobs at R-1's (in a Mass Comm Department) post-graduation?

    1. U WISCONSIN MADISON

    2. UNC CHAPEL HILL

    3. U INDIANA BLOOMINGTON

(Please assume that they are all offering a competitive financial packages, have faculty doing research I am passionate about, and that I will work my ass off.)

Thank you in advance to anyone who can chime in. ❤️ -Dannie

I will vote for UW-Madison - especially if you are working on political comm

I am on the waitlist for Cornell (and Utah) as of now. Only acceptance is at University of South Carolina School of Public Health, but with great faculty who have Health Comm expertise, so I am happy for that!

One of my potential advisors wrote me a pretty long detailed email about the process and told me to seriously hold on, that he's "hopeful" a spot will open up for me. What just sucks is that he told me any other year, I probably would have gotten an outright offer, but this year they had to seriously be more conservative with offers. So again, I'm really hoping haha (Help me baby Jesus)

yeah, the funding & spots do vary year by year, I believe you'll get it!!! Fingers crossed

Hey @fjf2019 I did apply and interview with Maryland about two weeks ago. I'm not 100% sure if they interview everyone, I thought it was kinda crazy that I got an interview so quickly after I applied (since their deadline was Jan 7th). I've heard the Maryland Comm PhD is pretty competitive.

All the Comm programs I've applied to (from what I've heard from them and the grapevine [other students, faculty, etc]) have said they have more limited resources this year to make offers. Not sure if they are planning for an economic recession, and maybe are just trying to be preemptive for that. I think Maryland should be making decisions soon as UPenn and some of the other top programs should be making final decisions soon.

hey! Congrats on your acceptance! Just want to check it out, you already heard from Cornell right?

    Hi All!

New to the thread! I'm a mass comm PhD applicant focused on international/political comm. I applied to:  UWMadison, UMichigan, UIBloomington, UGA, UPenn, Penn State, Stanford, and UPenn Annenberg. Responses so far:

UGA: Accepted (my home program so I found out early)

UWMadison: Accepted (funding letter in 1-2 weeks) (I learned some inside news on who gets $$ there-see my post to Emma Friday in this thread)

    Stanford: Rejected (haha-not surprised..)

Penn State: Flying up for interview 2/7

UNC Chapel Hill: Flying up for interview 2/14

UPenn Annenberg (BIG DREAM): No News Yet, Ms. Murray says news comes out mid-February.

    UMichigan: No News Yet

    UI Bloomington: No News Yet

STATS: Undergrad GPA: 3.92, Grad GPA: 4.0, GRE: 310-V163/Q147. (I know-I bombed my Q...I have a lot of quant research experience and all A's in math on transcripts, including phD level-hoping that will compensate) A dozen or so academic awards and research grants, years of teaching experience and good research experience. One co-authored publication and two theses. A McNair Scholar (low income/1st gen) and speak a couple of foreign languages.

I'm so thankful to be in any of the programs I applied to-they are all wonderful, but UPenn Annenberg is my dream school. I don't have connections to any faculty, but my research interests are an exact fit. I'm a total mess waiting to hear...checking emails all day everyday even though I know it's too early. Anybody have news from or any inside knowledge on Annenberg?

    Good luck!

    -Dannie

Hi Dannie, same here waiting for Upenn & UMichigan! :)  I m basically doing political comm, comm & tech stuff

Hey y'all, sorry to join so late. I interviewed with Cornell a week ago and just got an email yesterday saying I'm on the waitlist for now. They said they had to be more conservative this year on offers due to limited resources in the department. So fingers crossed, that would be a really great opportunity.

I'm kinda an odd one out just FYI, I have a Master in Public Health but looking to cross over into Comm, specifically Health Comm, so it could have helped me or hurt my chances.  I also applied to Public Health PhDs too, so I could be anywhere next year.

I also applied to Utah as my partner is out there finishing her PhD in Political Science, it looks like next week we should hear back from them.

19 Fall Communication/Public Health PhD application

Applied: Utah (Comm) / Cornell (Comm) / Maryland (Comm) / Michigan State (Comm) / Johns Hopkins (PH) / South Carolina (PH) / North Carolina (PH) / Harvard (PH) / Vanderbilt (Other)

    Interviewed: Maryland / Cornell

     Waitlist: Cornell

    Accepted: South Carolina

Rejected: Johns Hopkins (Presumed, friend applied to same program and got an interview invitation)

thanks for your update! though i think it was a mistake to apply cornell, really not that match... hope you finally get in! they are pretty strong in health comm

I'm more on the media studies side. I plan to study gender codes and their transmission across political and cultural boundaries, especially masculinities, and especially between Japan and the USA. I'm interested in Penn because of their strong faculty in East Asian studies; I've done a few seminars and grant projects with their East Asia center. I don't know if I'm an especially strong applicant for their program, but we'll see.

How about you? I'd love to hear about your research interests.

i hv a more old-school interest :) probably political comm, public opinion in the influence of technology. I am also very interested in gender studies!! and masculinities!!! hope one day we can hv FtF discussion

Hi all, I am also applying for 2019 Fall. My interests are sort of broad...and I worry a lot if that will be a disadvantage for my application.. anyway, I m looking for programs focusing on the intersection of technology & political comm, public opinion, and gender-related issues. I applied northwestern / usc  /cornell / michigan / osu / ut austin, all pretty nice schools. If I am not admitted by any one of them, I think I will just work, haha.

Will appreciate a lot if somebody can share any interview notices. best luck to all.

just got my first offer from OSU, good luck everyone!
