Do these schools have open houses? Since they're upper tier, I'd expect them to. I recommend visiting them and getting a sense of the atmosphere, as it helped other accepted students in my program to completely change their minds.

Agreed-- I have been to the open houses, and honestly all of the programs seem fabulous. I can see myself being happy at any of these programs. What other factors do people sue to decide where to go? I'm just confused all over and want to make the best decision!!

Congrats! I think the thing that matters the least is the prestige... unless it is also an institution that has great research, mentors you vibe with, location you'd want to live, good stipend/benefits, career development services, etc. Just try to figure out where you will be the happiest because when it all comes down to it, that'll help you get through the challenges and uncertainty of PhD training. If you study at a prestigious university but have mean or unsupportive mentors, it could turn into one of the worst experiences of your life. I know people that got their PhD from "lower" tier schools and now work as postdocs at top institutions... hope this helps.

That's a great point! Thank you for your input. This is such a difficult decision. The truth is, I have visited the universities and believe I would be happy at any of the programs... and they're all such great programs... oy. Make the decision that much harder

  3. Hi all! I have offers from PhD programs in neuroscience from UIC, Northwestern, University of Chicago, and University of Southern California. My preference right now is for the latter 3, but I'm having trouble deciding which program to commit to and must make a decision by the April 15 deadline-- any insight into prestige of programs/factors to consider/any thoughts at all?? Very confused and appreciate any insight! Thanks in advance!

  4. Question-- what's typical etiquette for how long u take to decide when accepting/rejecting offers? I was given an offer from my top choice a couple weeks ago and anticipate ultimately accepting with them, but have a trip out of town to tour the campus of another school i have an acceptance from and want to make my final decision after i've seen both campuses. But i dont know how long is too long... thoughts?

Here are my admissions results so far. What I've learned is this processes is kind of like sorority/fraternity recruitment LOL and getting rejected from somewhere does not mean you won't get accepted to a top tier school:

    Johns Hopkins: interview, accepted

    UMB: interview, accepted

    UMiami: Interview, accepted

    Pitt: interview, rejected

    CMU: interview, rejected

    CUNY: interview, waitlisted

    UIC: interview, ?

    NYU: interview, ?

    Upenn: rejected

    Northwestern: rejected

    Columbia: ?

    GWU: ?

    Temple: ?

    UCSC: ?

    UCSB: ?

Hi there- I interviewed at UIC and got an offer a few weeks back. Not sure if they're planning on sending out more offers. Best of luck!

  6. So i received an offer from a school and responded back that i'm super excited abt the offer but am still interviewing and would like some time to think abt my decision after completing all itnerviews- and I haven't gotten a response back from the department yet. The email was carefully worded and super polite/grateful/professional-- do we think it's a little weird I haven't gotten a response back yet? It's been over 24 hours since I sent my response

  7. In one of my interviews, I have been assigned to interview with a professor who is actually an orthopedic surgeon who does research on the side, so I am unable to find more than a couple of sentences explaining his research work! Advice on how to prep for this interview? For all my other interviews I'm studying up on their work but I feel like I can't do this for him...

Has anyone been brave enough to email Stanford asking if all interview invites have been sent out? I have only seen a few invites on here. At this point I am assuming a rejection.

I have! Here's what they said:

In the coming weeks, the committees will be finalizing their admissions decisions. The selected applicants will be invited to interview virtually February 15-17, 2022. This will be our only interview session. Those admitted will be invited, at our expense, to an in-person visit March 17-20, 2022.

In general, if an applicant has not heard about a possible invitation by mid-February, it is unlikely that they will be invited to Stanford or admitted. Applicants who are not selected for an interview will receive a letter that states that no further action will be taken on their application.

    Hope this is helpful!!!
