Yes, I created an account in order to respond to this. I'm responding, because I think society's perception of these disciplines is self-fulfilling. It's not that these disciplines don't teach useful skills or that you can't be successful; it's that society assumes that this is the case and then reinforces it. I have a philosophy MA and a religion MA. I was 26 when I got a tenure-track job at a community college. My tech startup recently got acquired, and I'm "staying on" with the company on an hourly/consulting basis. Yes, I have quite a bit of debt (~$70k), but I have no regrets. I'm currently making >$100k. We need perceptions to change.
