That makes sense. Thanks for the info!

I fully agree with you that people should be wary of UT Austin, but on COL, it's not that I don't believe you (after all, you've lived there and I haven't), but everything that I can find online doesn't corroborate what you're saying. For example, https://www.payscale.com/cost-of-living-calculator/Texas-Austin. Supposedly, the cost of housing is right around the national average. Is there something that I'm missing?
-
20K is actually very good in Texas, given the low COL. I would also say that the PhD programs that you're talking about are worth taking over reapplying.

Yeah, supporting something and being responsible for its existence/operation are two very different things

Brian Leiter hasn't ran the PGR in years

Continental Philosophy: Stony Brook, Emory, or Penn State?

That's higher than I thought it was, but you may be right!

MAs were never truly a safety option. The top MA programs have always been quite competitive, though they are no doubt more competitive this year

I actually don't think that Berkeley phil sent rejections in Feb. I think they were either fake, implied rejections, or not from the regular phil program

It aint over till its over

Do you mean that you have two left?

thats what the venting thread is for

Wow, good for you. Good luck!
-
That's great news. Did you apply to both programs?

No one in the Facebook group has claimed an acceptance, but 5 people have claimed waitlists. Most of these people have other options, but Yale is likely their top choice, or among their 2 or 3 top choices so far. Again, we'll have a better idea of things after this week or maybe next week when most of the top-ranked programs have released their decisions
-
First of all, congratulations! That is a huge achievement, and I envy your position. There are at least 3 or 4 other people on the waitlist. I'm not sure what that means, but I would have hope if I were you. You never know what may happen over the course of the next month and a half! There may especially be some movement after NYU, Princeton, Harvard, USC, etc. release their decisions

Yeah I was confused at first because philosophy admissions were suspended at Columbia this year...but then I got to the end of the post: "Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe MA program"
-
With every passing day, they are 50% closer to making a decision

I would agree with @PhilgoreTrout above. Getting shut out of PhDs if you dont already have an MA is no big deal. It's normal for people to do MAs these days. If you already have an MA and you get shut out, then it may be time to re-evaluate. That being said, I've certainly seen folks get shut out and then apply the next year with an improved sample with success. It can be tough to swallow your pride and try again, but it can work out. However, if you're getting shutout cycle after cycle, I would agree that you should probably pursue other opportunities

No there are more on Facebook and the Grad Cafe

Hey, no hard feelings, I'm glad that you're feeling better about things
