  1. Harvard usually does interviews for Classics, not sure of the timeline, though.
  2. My final results: Johns Hopkins - not sure? They said that I was still under consideration but I haven't heard back in a while, so likely a rejection Chicago - waitlisted UCLA - accepted Harvard - accepted, will be my pick UK schools - one rejection, two waitlists Good luck to everyone in these last few weeks
  3. Clean sweep of interviews/waitlist, with one post-interview rejection so far, for a mixture of programs in NELC and history more generally. Johns Hopkins - scheduled interview Chicago - waitlist Harvard - awaiting decision, interviewed UCLA - told that acceptance will be coming shortly And my UK schools: A - rejected post-interview B - awaiting decision, interviewed C - scheduled interview
  4. Applied for NELC. Been waitlisted at Chicago, interviewed by Harvard, told that there would be a delay to UCLA decisions, and heard nothing from Johns Hopkins. Also received an interview from a UK program today.
  5. Waitlisted at Chicago for a NELC PhD.
  6. That's awesome - so glad I'm not the only one where are you applying? And what is your degree background like?
  7. NELC, although I have classmates applying through Classics. How about you?
  8. Thank you @JMAurelius and @Archaeogirl! Applied to Chicago, UCLA, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins. Hoping to hear back ASAP but I know the waiting game is about to begin. I heard Hopkins can send out decisions really early, though, so you never know.
  9. If you have any questions about IU, let me know. I've taken ancient history classes in Chinese and Egyptian there
  10. I'm applying for Ancient Near Eastern Studies - anyone else?
  11. Sorry - I'm new to this so I had no idea.
  12. What do you guys think my chances are? I know the GRE isn't as important for my subject area, but my verbal is bad, and I bombed my MPhil. Applying for PhDs in Near Eastern Studies: Harvard, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, Chicago. GPA: 3.9 in MA (Big 10 school), 3.5-ish in MPhil (in the UK, but during a COVID year with some extenuating circumstances), 4.0 in UG (not a very well known school). GRE: 6.0 writing, 74th percentile for verbal, 30th for quant (lol). Experience: 2 years of teaching, 2 years as a research assistant for a show on Near Eastern history, scholarships and prizes every year since UG, upper elementary or above in 6 languages.
  13. We don't have a union, sadly, and the university said its legal team can't help me as it'd be a conflict of interest, even at the student legal clinic. So, I'm not entirely sure what to do.
  14. Thanks, sadly I didn't get any responses, but I'll post it again in a few days.
  15. I'm currently working on my MA, and I am funded by another department as I teach for them. When I accepted my offer to come to this school, I was told that the funding would be renewed for the second year as long as I met the GPA, taught well enough, and they still needed me, but was told that the latter part was no issue as they always needed extra TAs. Fast forward to last week, I have been told that they have massively over offered places on their MA for next year, so they might cut off my funding. I have a 3.9 GPA, a perfect course evaluation, and I've got massively above and beyond to help my students and engage with the department. I'm devastated that the DGS didn't even have the balls to say it to my face but sent an email through the department PA. I'm not the only person this is happening to but I am in shock that this has been allowed to happen despite promises that it wouldn't. I can't afford this MA otherwise so I'd have to drop out. They told me they can't give me a decision until the middle of April at least, which is of course far too late r.e. housing and everything for next year. What can I do? I'm applying for TA positions in other departments but I can't believe this has happened. What rights do I have? Do I have any at all?
  16. Ah, you're lucky to have a car. I think I'll ask my course directors if they can put me in touch with people. I'll have a look at Sassafras though, thank you.
  17. Do you have any recommendations? Every time I find a one, I check Reddit and there are terrible reviews.... Plus, I don't have a car, and I am only on an MA stipend of $16,000, so I'm a lot more limited than most.
  18. How's your search going? I've been admitted for Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures but finding it really hard to find a good place to live!
  19. Hi all, well done on your admissions! Is anyone searching for housing yet? How's it going? I'm finding it particularly challenging at the moment, especially from abroad.
  20. Is anyone going to be attending IU this fall? I had to defer from last year, but am hoping my funding comes through (again), and I can start in August.
  21. Hi, I haven't seen a thread for IU this year so thought I would start one. I'm planning to do an MA in NELC (Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, specialising in Egypt).
  22. I'm from the UK and am taking a TA position at Indiana. I won't start teaching classes until 2021, but was wondering, how much prep do you guys do for your classes, and how much time per week do you spend on TA duties outside of your own postgraduate studies? I'm going to be teaching ancient languages if this helps.
  23. Hi from a confused European, I've been accepted to grad school (NELC, Egyptology) at Indiana, and it's made me realise that I know nothing about the American education system. In the UK, our MAs are super independent and there are barely any contact hours per week, with only a few assignments per semester. Obviously I realise it will differ by subject and discipline, but should I expect regular testing? Do I make my own notes or are you given course notes? Are there lots of presentations and tests or large assignments? Thanks in advance!

Does anyone else have any good, 1 bedroom or studio apartment complexes that they could recommend? Cheers, Ed
  25. I got my NELC acceptance for Indiana yesterday. Not sure if this helps.
