  1. I’m interested in working with adults, in voice/fluency, and with transgender individuals and I just accepted my spot at Emerson because I love the culture there and they offered a scholarship. BU and MGH are just too expensive, and I’ve been assured by multiple working SLPs that attending one school over another based on reputation for adult vs school vs medical is just not as important a factor as everyone thinks. I think finding a program where you feel you can be successful and graduate with the least amount of debt possible is far more valuable. Before seeking outside advise, I was so excited about MGH and making medical connections, but so concerned about the cost. Making the shift to a Emerson has been such a relief, as I know I will get an excellent education and have relationships with my professors and cohort, and emerge ready to focus on work and finding the setting I want to be in rather than my paycheck and paying off debt.
  2. Thank you! It’s not official, as I’ll still attend campus days to be sure I feel good about the decision, but Emerson College:) I loved the atmosphere there when I visited and their Transgender Voice program is unique and aligns with my interests. I have a colleague with connections to faculty at some of the Boston programs who reiterated for me that there is no wrong choice amongst the Boston programs if what I want is to pursue clinical work (rather than a specific area of research). This faculty member also stressed that there is an inflated sense of importance built up around clinical placements during the application/school choice process. They said students always think their education, CF, and future employment hinges on getting exactly the settings they want but that this is just not true. There are so many variables and ultimately we should seek a program that we feel will be supportive and provide a solid, well-rounded education so we feel prepared for work after college. I found this really helpful, as I was holding onto this fear that turning down MGH meant cutting off opportunities to work in medical slp, and though it’s an amazing program, it’s not the golden ticket:)
  3. MGH has been my first choice for months and I was elated to receive acceptance. However I was offered a scholarship at another school that makes MGH 3x as expensive and I just simply cannot justify the cost. I did send a formal letter expressing my excitement and inquiring into the possibility of a scholarship from MGH for those not initially offered one in their letters, and it was met with a firm “we’ve given out all of the scholarships we’re going to give”. There are absolutely strengths and weaknesses to each program, but ultimately it’s the work we do after school that will build our careers. So here I am unexpectedly turning away from MGH and feeling surprisingly good about it.
  4. Speechgal, I’d love some more of your insight into MGH as a current student. MGH is my first choice, as I’m interested in voice disorders and medical slp. I don’t think I’m interested in working in schools or exclusively with kids, though I have an open mind. At MGH, I’m considering the voice disorders track, and I would be interested in professional work with singers, medical slp, and transgender voice and communication. The only issue is the cost. MGH is so much more expensive than Emerson with the offer I received that I’m hesitating. Working SLPs and others on this forum keep saying that it doesn’t matter what school you attend, which makes me nervous to pay 3x the money to attend MGH. However I don’t want to make a choice based on finances alone when I worked this hard to get into MGH As an MGH student, do you feel you are building connections to the Partners hospital network and/or others that would make it feasible to begin a career in a medical setting right out of school? Would you say the faculty, clinical placements, and electives offering specialized focus are worth the added cost of the program?
  5. Does anyone have insight into whether we can ask about loan amounts before accepting our place, or if this info is part of the conversation once you've accepted a program placement?
  6. I got into Northeastern and BU as well, still waiting to hear from Emerson...but since I'm interested in voice & medical SLP, MGH seems like the ticket. I love the Partners Hospital system, and it's a huge network here in MA.
  7. Hi everyone, I was also accepted in MGH for Fall 2019 and it's my first choice so I'm thrilled! I'll be at the open house on the 23rd. I live in Boston and have been here for 10 years, so feel free to send questions my way as well:) Good luck to all still waiting for responses.
