  1. I've been a fan of Muji stationary for a few years now. I'm currently using their 2013 vinyl bound planner. The design is simple and clean and was pretty affordable. I also really liked the texture and durability of the paper. When I bought it there were several sizes and colors. I checked muji.us for more details but it looks like their out of stock for this year. However, I found a good description with pictures here: http://yukiatsu.tumblr.com/post/36829447679/muji-2013-vinyl-chloride-cover-r-paper-monthly I would definitely check for 2014 when the agenda/planner buying season comes around. In my search I also came across this pinterest board just for planners & diaries!! http://pinterest.com/designsponge/planners-diaries/ As for your thoughts, I would also go with the suggestion of jotting those down elsewhere.
  2. I bought a refurb iPad 2 that looked brand new and functioned perfectly. I also just bought a refurb macbook air for the fall that is spotless on the surface and works like a new machine. I'm am completely sold on buying Apple products from the refurb bin. As mentioned, these items do seem to be more reliable as all the kinks are worked out before they resell them. As a comparison, when I bought my macbook pro back in '09 (brand new), less than 1 month in the disk drive malfunctioned. Save some money and headache over potential malfunctions and go for the refurb.
  3. http://awkwardconversilence.wordpress.com/ I've been inspired by thegradcafe as well. Hopefully I can update at least once a week!
  4. I would say the same for public health - very flexible and the skills can be applied in multiple settings. You might want to consider an MPH (or even MA/MS) in medical anthropology esp. with your interest in narrative medicine. I've met several people when I was in my MPH program working and doing research along that route. And if for whatever reason you cannot secure a job working directly with those in the Appalachia, the MPH is a practical/terminal degree that can fill many positions.
  5. I received the welcome email, but also had an informal acceptance from my department and then about 10 days later an official acceptance letter in the mail. There was also a notification in my online application with accept/decline buttons. Check the online app and call your dept or admissions to check in. You may have been accepted but the letter is delayed.
  6. I was surprised that no matter how much I prepared myself for this process beforehand (knowing decisions would take a while), I still stressed out all the way through it. As if my stressing would make decisions come faster... But I think it was a good test of my resiliency and patience given the numerous hiccups in the application materials along the way. I agree that visiting schools really does help with deciding but I think it eventually comes down to what feels the most right. No school is perfect and we're not going to know exactly how our individual experiences will be. Just hope we feel confident with our decisions onces were in
  7. I'm staying in my home, but will have about an hour commute to school (unless I get on-campus parking). I'm looking into weatherproof outerwear, shoes, and bag for whatever comes my way in the urban wilderness. Also excited to finally get a new laptop - considering a macbook air. I want to upgrade my home office to be more suitable for my impending study needs (new desk, filing cabinets, shelves, bookcase, printer, comfy chair). Finally, I don't know if it's just me, but I get so excited when I get to buy back to school supplies (pens, pencils, notebooks, highlighters, calculator, binders galore) ...major dork, I know But I'm going to try to be patient until mid-summer before I start stocking my home full of school stuff.
  8. I was at work and got an email from the financial aid office congratulating me on my acceptance to the school. I hadn't even received official notice from the department I applied to. A couple hours later it was official. My co-workers and I had a mini-celebration.
  9. Three. Since I just bought a home with my fiance location weighed a lot on my decision. I initially started with a mix of programs in my area based on my interests, but after speaking with faculty and visiting schools I whittled my list down to 3 with the best fit. In at my top choice and waiting on the last 2. Thankfully things are working out so far, but for my field 6-8 is probably the norm.
  10. Heard back from Columbia today via email. I'm in for DrPH in Epidemiology I actually received an email from Financial Aid congratulating me hours before I received official notification from the school. How backwards! No word on funding yet (fingers crossed).
  11. I'm at week 14 and still no decisions. Maybe lucky week 15??
  12. I'm still waiting on decisions for all 3 of my applications - one submitted since Dec 1. Nothing is over until it's official, right? Keep the hope alive MammaD. Rooting for you. Here's another Friday - hopefully filled with good news
  13. Seems to be the same trend with Epi - some PhD decisions went out today but no word on Epi DrPH.
  14. Awesome! Congrats!! No word yet for me (fingers crossed).
  15. I applied to the DrPH in Epi and also had an interview. Also thought we'd hear back Mar 1. I got antsy on Friday and called the admissions office to get an update on when notices would go out. I learned that they still hadn't made a decision on my application but decisions will go out between now and April 1 since we need to decide by Apr 15. Vague but I'm hoping we hear back by Mar 15. It's been over 3 months since we submitted the application.
  16. Sorry to hear of the rejections! MSPH stands for Mailman School of Public Health. Unless you mean why the letters weren't from the GSAS?
