They won't see you're applying to other programs.

This is my second year applying. I spent months working and volunteering with SLPs, I volunteered with special needs children, worked as an ABA therapist, I help in a non-profit organization that do weekend programs for parents with children with special needs.. I also had my honours thesis published in an academic journal. It has been a year from hell and I haven't stopped the entire time. Wanted to ensure that in my year off I gave 100%.

I was accepted to a different masters program. I will be making my decision after April 1st. Speech is my first priority.

Wow you've done so much! I was looking into a ABA therapy, but I wasn't sure how to do about this if I need to. I heard that it takes two years to get certified in ABA? Also, congratulations on your publication, and acceptance into another Masters program! I hope you get into speech!! :)

  2. This is sort of unrelated, but for the people applying the second/third time around could you let us know what you did to strengthen your application? I'm starting to doubt I'll get in the first time around, and so I was wondering what I need to be doing to improve my application.

Also, does anyone know if it would negatively affect my application if I applied to another program too?

    Thanks in advance,

My U of A application says complete, but it says the due date is March 10, 2020. Does anyone know what this due date is for? I can't find anything on their website

I think you're checking bear tracks and not the GS portal? On my bear tracks my application also says complete, and I have a due date as well. However, on the website it says not to rely on bear tracks and to use the GS portal to track your application.

Just curious if anyone has reached out to U of A to see when they may start sending out acceptances? I'm thinking end of March but hoping for sooner.

I haven't contacted them personally, but from other forums and previous years it appears as though the applications go "Under Review" in the beginning of March, and admission offers are sent out around March 24-28.

Hey! I'm curious if you received a notification that you were waitlisted and when you found that out? Do they send out letters to everyone on the waitlist as soon as the quota is filled? I applied to U of A for the first time, but to be honest I have a feeling I'll be waitlisted too. I'm going a little crazy having to wait and not being able to plan out if I have to move to Edmonton or not!

When I attended the admissions session at U of A's oasis conference this question was answered! Vicki said that typically there are 170 applicants each year. Someone also asked how many of those applications were serious. She seemed kinda hesitant to answer that so her answer might just be her own estimate, but she said about 90.

    Cheers

Thanks for the response! I was looking for the wait list date too. On previous forms, people found out they were waitlisted on March 28-29. I’m hoping we’ll find out soon because the wait is driving me crazy.
Also, Maybe she hesitated because not many of the 170 meet the requirements? ?

Does anyone know the gpa cutoff for the Mcmaster interview? I didn't hear anything from them, so I'm going to say that I didn't make it lol. Or do you think they are still sending out interview invitations?

I don't know the gpa cut off, but I think you're still good! From what I've heard about previous years they send out interviews in waves. So, I wouldn't start to worry until it gets closer to the week of March 7th! :)

According to ORPAS my subGPA is 3.84. However, @GenerationSpeechie mentioned that they contacted ORPAS who said that this wasn't our actual subGPA, and that it would be fixed/updated later in February. Based on the chart mine seems accurate (I think? lol) so I'm not sure what exactly they'd change.

Also, just something one of my supervisors told me that I think is useful/happy to keep in mind during this stressful time: we're finishing a degree! Not everyone gets the opportunity to complete an undergraduate degree, and we should be happy and proud of ourselves for that, regardless of our admissions results. Good luck everyone!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all :D

Thanks for sharing that advice! Good luck to you too!! :D

Two years ago my friend was accepted to the U of A mid-February. Last year I called their department mid-February asking when they expected to send out offers and they said they were sending them out later than usual because of a change of roles happening at the time. So maybe there's a chance we could find out earlier again this year.

Oh, okay! Thanks for clarifying, at least we know the wait is almost over. ??

    Hey there!

Thank you so much! I didn’t hear back until the end of March, which is actually pretty. But I definitely understand the compulsive checking. The waiting is the worst! But you’re very unlikely to hear anything until at least the beginning of March. If anyone is interested in Dal, I didn’t hear from them until beginning of April.

    Good luck!

Thank you! I can relax on compulsively checking my email now, haha. There was someone on a forum who had said they heard back during reading week (February 15ish), so I wasn't sure if that would have given them enough time to review the applications.

Thank you!! He ended up submitting it last night thankfully. He did say that on the link they sent him it said his reference was due by Feb. 3 and said it's not uncommon for grad schools to give the students and the referees different due dates apparently? I'm not sure on that matter but just thankful it's all done and taken care of now!

I'm so glad he got it in on time!! I was thinking of you yesterday and hoping that he'd get it in on time. Thanks for updating me and letting me know about the reference due dates. In the screenshots that my references had sent there wasn't a date, but maybe there was an email that they hadn't shown to me. Either way, I'm just so glad that he was able to get it in on time for you! Best of luck, I seriously hope you get in! :)

I'm so nervous! STILL waiting on my last reference to submit his letter for U of A. I told him it had to be submitted by Jan. 29 (just to be on the safe side), I even reminded him a week beforehand and he responded saying that he's got it all under control and not to worry. It's almost Feb. 1 (the due date) and he still hasn't submitted. He's already written one for me because he submitted one for me in early January for Western, so I don't know why he can't just submit it!! I thought maybe the link U of A sent him had the actual due date on it and maybe that's why he hasn't submitted yet, but I'm not sure. I hate having to nag him but I even got a message from U of A today to follow up with him to make sure it gets submitted or my application won't be reviewed. Sometimes he responds to my emails within 30 minutes, and sometimes he takes a week to respond. I'm so nervous because I don't even know WHEN he's going to open my email. Fingers crossed. ?

Hey, I had a similar situation but rather than giving them a deadline on January 29, I told them that the references are due on January 21st. This ensured that I had the references completed over a week in advance, and that I had time to find other references because life happens sometimes.

In terms of the deadline being in the email that UofA sent, I don't think they put in the deadline. They expect students to update their references. My references have forwarded screenshots of their emails when they received them, and the emails that said that the references were completed and none of those have the actual due date.

I hope it all works out, keep us posted!

To the UofA applicants, under references, when it changes from "Reference request email sent" to "Reference initiated" , does that mean that the reference has submitted their letter and all other forms? I'm getting more nervous as the deadline approaches and I just want to make sure everything is in order!!

"Reference Initiated" means that they have responded that they agree to be a reference and may have possibly started their application. For the reference to be submitted it should say "Reference Submitted".

Hey everyone! I’m a current student at the UofA so please let me know if you have any questions about the program! Good luck!

    Hey,

First-and-foremost, congratulations on getting into the program! How are you finding it so far? Also, when you applied do you know when decisions began to roll-out? I've been compulsively checking my email every hour, and its just increasing my anxiety levels.

Wow, I totally feel the same! It's also my first year applying (also applied to UofA)!

I'm finding it hard not to compare my stats to other applicants, especially because there are some amazing students out there.

Haven't gotten any yet but I'm hoping to get updates sooner rather than later. Good luck!!

Hey! I'm in the same boat. I've submitted my application but I'm still waiting on one of my professors to submit their reference letter. I don't think I've ever been so stressed. Its upsetting to know that my application lies in this professors hands.

Hope you all get in! :)

    Hello,

I have applied to the following colleges:

    - University of Alberta (First Choice)- Found a potential Supervisor

    - University of British Columbia

    - McGill University - Found a potential Supervisor

    - Western Ontario University

    - University of Manitoba

    - Dalhousie University

    - University of Saskatchewan

    -Laurier University

    - Queens University - Found a supervisor

I honestly wanted to apply to just one but my parents wanted me to be on the safe side. So here I am lol. Good luck everyone!

It's good that you applied to so many! I was only able to apply to one, so it adds on stress on the chances of not getting in. I hope everything goes well, and you get into the school you want! :)

Hi everyone! I am currently in my first year of the UAlberta SLP program - if you have any questions, I am happy to try to answer them :) Best of luck to you all!

    Hey!

Would you be open to sharing your stats? I'm applying this year, and I'm unsure if I want to re-write the GRE, or even if my application is good enough! Any insight would be helpful at this point!

  17. Hey everyone!

I know this form hasn't been as active as lately, but I'm really nervous and seeking advice! I'm applying to the UofA SLP program this year (I've started by application) but I'm a bit worried about my GRE scores. Would anyone be willing to send me their stats of when they got accepted to UofA? I would really appreciate it + any advice you might have!

  18. Hey everyone!

I'm planning on applying into the SLP program at UofA. I wanted to see if there's others who have applied, or people who have gotten in?Any advice is appreciated, as I'm super stressed out with my application.  I'm a bit worried about my GRE scores. Does anyone know the minimum scores required for the GRE?  I scored 147 Verbal and 157 in Quantitative, which i'm not too happy about.
