My advice: Try not to think of it as something you did wrong. Its more likely that you did great, but so did the other candidates. And they can only choose but a few. I'd say its not that they didn't like you - they probably did. It may simply be that they liked a few other candidates better, given their backgrounds and research interests....

Yeah thanks for the advice, but when you got rejected by a program you like thats such a real bummer, and the brain just keeps thinking about what I did wrong...

Yes, typically programs end up offering 2x offers but I believe they also do it slowly until April, as there are many moving parts for applicants with other offers.

I’m sorry BCM outcome is not as expected. May be they thought your fit was better for QCB based on your interests communicated during the interview? It is a bit shocking.
I hope you have an offer from your top choice schools!

Yea maybe my background is too dry... thanks for your good words T_T tbh I like the labs at BCM more than other schools... I don't know what's going on lol

The program director said “it’s most likely” that majority will be waitlisted. They did say they’ll communicate rejects as soon as possible so applicants can accepts other offers they have.

According to the presentation, they are interviewing 58 candidates but want the incoming class size to be ~15. So they can’t give out too many offers and not have enough spots, right? I guess that is true for most schools, just that some make you wait in silence and BCM might be more communicative. That’s my hunch!

If a school wants to ensure their incoming class size, also usually enrolled rates are ~40-60%, they will send out 2x offers so here I guess they would offer ~30 applicants

I just got rejected from BCM and I don't quite understand why, I got offers from some other schools with higher prestige though...... and they transferred my application to QCB, wtf...??

Anyone know when we should expect to hear back from Mount Sinai?

Also, I never heard back from NYU Vilcek (neither rejection nor interview). Would have assumed silent R, but many people received R’s a while back. Anyone else experiencing this?

Based on last year's timeline I guess Mount Sinai will send out updates sometime between late Feb and early March..

Also I got rejection letter from Vilcek so maybe you can check your portal

Very insightful and extremely helpful comments! I wish I could see this earlier, but luckily I do avoid some programs as they are famous for "not taking international students". I would add that grad school admission is pretty random (as I felt at this cycle), and what you can really do is to build connections from your current mentor. Try to inquire POI who has been working with your current mentor, or in any form of collaboration. That would probably help!

I would also add some programs here: CBB at USC and Biomedical PhD at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Based on USC's website, they do take many Chinese students. The later, though titled as Biomedical, they have exciting training area like Genetics and Data Science, and they also have another new training area- AI and technology...Sth like that. And the school is expanding and taking lots of PhD students. I actually found it's a really great program when I went to their interview day.

Plz correct me if I made some mistakes in my comments. For me, it's my first cycle and hope my comments help!

I've just done my sinai's interviews and really like people there, which is beyond my expectation! Beside their new AIET (Artificial intelligence & emerging technologies), there's also a new center for advanced genomics technology, called AGI or something. Anyone applying for PhD programs in genomics and neuroscience can keep an eye on Mount Sinai, it's def a great place for research and it's in Manhattan lol

I am honestly shocked... I expected to at least get an interview. I graduated with an engineering MS from Columbia University. I work at Mount Sinai for more than a year, have a co author publication, literally manage a PhD project by myself and serve as the lab manager. I had two PIs that literally wrote they will gladly accept me to their lab. (One of them is the one I currently work for) What else more do they want????

sorry to hear that... what track did you apply for? maybe that's a really competitive one

  8. Just wanted to share my US program list and status on Saturday:

    • Weill Cornell PBSB [Interview invitation 12/17]
    • Baylor College of Medicine Genetics & Genomics [Interview invitation 12/13]
    • UC Santa Cruz BMEB [Interview invitation 12/15]
    • Harvard SSQB
    • Harvard BBS
    • Harvard MCO
    • Tri-I CBM
    • NYU Vilcek Systems & Computational Biomedicine
    • Mount Sinai
    • University of Washington MolE
    • UTHealth Biostat

I thought UTHealth Biostat is a safe school because they sent out many admissions (without funding) last year, but no updates till now.

Also I guess I am rejected by Harvard BBS, I don't know why many applicants are still hoping to get an invite lol

Anyone received interview from UNC BBSP, Vandy IGP, Harvard BBS?

Do univs send invites first to domestic and then international??

Some universities have separated batches for domestic & international students like UPenn, some send out mixed (domestic + intl) invites gradually in one day or last for a few weeks - looks like UNC BBSP & BCM (& Harvard BBS?) do so, not sure about Vandy
