  1. Hey so I contacted UCSD and they said that their final decisions will be out in approx a week from yesterday. I am still hopeful! I didn’t email UCR but I might if they keep us waiting too long:)
  2. My exact thoughts! I am still hopeful and now kinda simmered down to a pensive patience I can endure:) Good luck!
  3. Who posted that they are on Austin’s waitlist as of today? Any details? (No pressure)
  4. Being sad is totally normal and knowing the sadness will pass regardless of your admissions status is powerful to believe. I see you and feel your pain I do! Friends will be had, new program cycles will arrive, and this admissions season will be a faint and distant memory someday sooner than you think. I speak from experience. You are brave to apply, you are brave to write what you did, and you are brave to confront your feelings. I am sending love and prayers your way! Please call the suicide prevention line 1-800-273-8255.
  5. Congrats on getting into those amazing programs! Seriously very cool!
  6. That’s cool. No word yet from either program either. I thought I’d be more calm about this whole process but oh my goodness the waiting is rough!
  7. I see. Well, I am still hopeful! Any news yet for you?
  8. Cool! I applied to UCSD and UCR. No word yet on my part but I saw one acceptance on results page for UCSD...
  9. That’s awesome! Sincere and genuine are wonderful characteristics of any department. So happy for you to find such amazing people. I feel that’s what I am looking for too. People to share in my passion, with sincerity, respect and enthusiasm:)
  10. So nice to hear from a fellow mom! I totally agree. I truly believe we have developed many life skills that will allow us to be diligent, mature and great at collaboration. I tried to not let the admission committees forget that in my SOP:) Ha!
  11. They are so proud of me it’s ridiculous! It’s so sweet. They are 8 and under, so it’s all very innocent and special. My oldest is telling his teachers about his mom the professor. Not yet baby, not yet!
  12. I am a mom of three, re-entering the education/research arena. From many years in the professional world, and raising kids, I can tell you just getting to be considered for a position as a researcher is a true HONOR. Just to be at a place in my life to be able to apply is a true blessing. Just to have a chance at doing what I’ve always wanted to do is the biggest joy for me. Regardless if they accept me, I am just so glad to be at this point. I still got some fight left in me, I still have plenty to offer, and I am determined. That’s all I can say. Those are all good things and don’t come easy to everyone. Here’s to peace, confidence and perspective. Cheers:)
  13. Any of you guys out there? Any updates/questions...
  14. Hey guys anyone have any updates? This wait.... oh my goodness!
  15. Hey guys, this is upsetting that this is happening in departments. What you guys are describing IS a hostile work environment filled with aggressive behavior. This behavior creates a feeling of “otherness” and isolation plus a feeling of being under attack and scrutiny. This is unfortunate. I come from the professional world where the work culture was VERY professional, so this is definitely something I need to be aware of as I enter the academic arena once more. Thanks guys for sharing your experiences. I think A LOT of women can relate.
  16. Hey guys just wanted to add (I am an older student with years in a professional field) that respectfully emailing someone can be brief, professional and an invaluable way to network. You can also get a glimpse into their personality as well, which in all honesty, aren’t we as applicants evaluating them and the program as well? It goes both ways. So the more information you have the better. Email them. Don’t write a novel, be polite and share some ideas. Also, I found the professors that did respond to be quite kind and helpful. I also didn’t take a lack of response as anything meaningful. Professors frequently do not keep up with email, it is in no way a reflection of you or your career. You will be one name amongst hundreds of applicants... I personally want to be the name they are semi- familiar with. Also, I found 1000 word SOPs were so brief, that the emails I sent added more detail about me.
  17. Cool. I emailed a couple and found them to be very kind. They all said they were not part of the selection committee this year but were encouraging.
  18. I applied to New Mexico and UT! Exciting... also applied to Ethnic Studies programs.
