  1. Keep your chins up y'all!
  2. How are y’all evaluating your statements?? I have no idea if mine are good or bad.
  3. I don't think that's a clear rejection at all! I think they're trying to reassure you that despite not having your transcripts, you are still eligible for consideration. I found the record of the article on the Poets & Writers archive but that's all. I hope you can find the magazine!
  4. I would love to continue working in film. The culture is slowly changing, so maybe one day. And yeah the industry is huge here! All interested filmmakers should check it out! Atlanta ain't cheap but it's no NYC or LA either. Congratulations to @SarahBuya and @Smrn17!!
  5. I actually worked here in Georgia. The industry is big down here – Stranger Things is shot here, Black Panther, Thor, Insatiable, list goes on! edit: it wasn’t working a lot that bothered me – it was everyone else’s attitude around working so much (very much a dick contest), the egos at play, and the way men treated me on set.
  6. What department were you in? I did costumes, and script supervising on a couple indies.
  7. I used to work in the film industry – prepare yourselves for a brutal workaholic culture. Also prepare for starting at the bottom no matter what, basically. Not trying to dissuade you, just information I wish I’d had some years ago. Best advice is to be early and be kind to everyone!
  8. For @KA2020 a selection of @litty's wise words from earlier in this thread. The full post is on page 2. I also only applied to fully funded programs. I went through a period of significant regret over my school choices and I had to remind myself that I cannot afford to take out loans for graduate school and that I only applied to schools I think I'd enjoy attending. That left me with 4 schools. If I am rejected, then I will try again -- but I won't compromise what I know is right for me just because I want to attend an MFA program. If you're going to devote years of your life to something, do it the right way -- your way -- and don't put a degree ahead of your best interests. If you need that funding then you need it. No shame. Also, not to be shady, but check out some of the drivel on r/writing and the likes. Remember that that is a lot of the competition for these programs.
  9. First of all I hate that acceptances go out via phone. Hate hate hate. Secondly, I work a lot and can't step away to take a call very often, if at all. My newest nightmare is a program deciding to reject me because I let the call go to voicemail. I know that won't happen but STILL!
  10. I love writing and sharing my poetry but I have no desire to study it in an academic setting. The decision between the two was easy for me. Besides, I can’t see these programs going for my brand of poetry, which I share via a stage show with lights and costume changes. It’s a lot of fun but not terribly academic!
  11. It'll be okay. It's tough and heartbreaking, but there's always next season. I know you want a change now, and you can make that change with or without school. Don't forget that!
  12. Thank you everyone for the responses! Another question for the group...what do you do when you have writer's block? I am so! ready! and pumped!! to start writing again after a little break but nothing comes to me. I've been journaling in hopes that will spark something but no dice.
  13. Welcome! Maybe just redirection to keep working on it! Perhaps you can do me a favor...what exactly is creative nonfiction? I see posts about it a lot but I'm fairly ignorant on the subject. I struggle with the distinction between CNF and journalism.
  14. I'm searching my inner peace garden for this week. I've waited this long already (as have we all), so why is the reality of waiting another one or two weeks feeling so impossible? Going into this process, I believed I would be devastated if I was rejected from all of the programs to which I applied. Now I'm not so sure. It is just school, after all.
  15. The right program will know if it’s the right fit for BOTH of you. This is a very subjective process – everyone else is spot on suggesting you keep writing and striving for publication. It’s just school.
  16. They sent an initial email saying they'd received my FAFSA, which was why I thought this mysterious "update" was something exciting!
  17. Any time my phone rings, my heart pounds. It’s always spam though! Hopefully I’ll get a nice phone call soon. i got a message yesterday from UC Irvine financial aid office saying an update had been made to my application. I was at work and scrambled to reset my login information so I could check (I forget my passwords a lot but they’re all saved on my home computer). The portal wouldn’t let me log in – kept saying my user was forbidden – and I thought I’d tear my hair out. I kept thinking my future was locked behind an impossible tech error. I ended up having to wait to get home only to find the “update” was only that the financial aid office didn’t need anything else from me. :l
  18. Did anyone else skip the GRE? I'm starting to wonder if that was a bad move on my part.
  19. Fantastic!
  20. AHHHHHHH!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
  21. Oh, SUPER chill. Now I'm starting to think Brown might be the best fit! One of my selections for my portfolio was absolutely absurd. I was nervous about including it but it felt wrong not to do so. I'm glad I did!
  22. What made you choose Cornell?
  23. What is Brown and Alabama's reputation?? I went into admissions blind and didn't know much about the schools I chose. In the end I think I chose well but I just sort of winged it (wang it?) and hoped for the best. I did apply to Brown and Alabama so now I'm like, oh no.
  24. Has anyone ever asked a school when they plan to notify? I'm too nervous to do it myself, but knowing when I could expect an answer may help quell my anxiety.
  25. We’re all here for you.
